I to seems to becoming the norm with bookies to cut a quarter or even a half point hoping you won't notice , but today at Limerick took the biscuit , having looked them over in the paddock but not really having an intention of having a bet , one horse took my eye and I decided to have a little on as i was very taken with this horse , i went into the ring and noticed this was a general 6/1 shot , I then spotted one bookie going 7/1 and asked for a bet of 50e , he called the bet and gave me my ticket   I usually don't get tickets as most books I back with know me .For some reason I looked at the ticket and noticed he'd only given me 6/1 , there was no bet either before or after me so he'd took no money for the horse ..I went over and said that was 7/1 when i asked you for the bet , he said sorry but it had changed just as you called the bet , there was no other punter betting with this bookie only me , he said I'll give you your money back ..I then went in search of better odds and duly got 13/2 ..The name of this lad would be very like a star of Coronation Street who died awhile back , be very careful if you're having a bet with this lad down south or anywhere else for that matter ..The horse won by 5l , another for Gigginstown...

It's sharp practice, part of the reason for it is this recent trend for the bookmaker to be no longer on the box.
He is now where the clerk used to be feverishly battering his keyboard trying to ensure the other new phenomenon risk free gambling.

I am glad you backed a winner Workrider, even more glad that you had the foresight to look at your ticket.

Got caught a couple  years ago in galway 75 ew on a horse  horse was placed checked docket only 5 ew on it  taught me 1 lesson always check stake and price
Report Santry March 16, 2014 9:03 PM GMT
It is something that has crept into the layers since the introduction of the electronic boards. You have to be certain of the price on the board as you hand over the cash and check the ticket . I have learnt from experience to be careful. In fact it happened to me in the opposite direction at Cheltenham this week . A bet I thought I was having at 8/1 ,when I looked at the ticket was 10/1.
Another big downside of the new boards is there is no competition in the ring. Every board has the same price.

Congrats on yet another aftertimed winner, Wonks Wink  They really are mounting up, at least one a week!
Report peckerdunne March 16, 2014 10:23 PM GMT
The lads that dont give the ticket stand the bet and call the 350/50, which is better for all concerned.

Vigilance off course with the machine...

They thing is lads , how many have they conned this way , i was tempted to report him ..It also happened to me recently at fairyhouse with one of the Badbrookes lads , had  200 on @ 5/2 when i looked at the docket it said 200 @ 9/4 , at least he apologized ..Be on your guard is all I'll say ...
Report wildmanfromborneo March 16, 2014 10:41 PM GMT
Its fair advice Workrider,if they are doing this to you an experienced punter what would they do to the tyro.

A question for One Last Chance, why did you just accept it,there had to be a fair chance that the bookie remembered the bet,a chance he would know fiver each way not your style.

Most of these disputes can be settled amicably but never just walk away without the semblance of a struggle.
Report slickster March 16, 2014 11:40 PM GMT
Ffs wonks do you think we are thick or what? Anyone, with a semblance of a  brain, will check their ticket as cash is handed over.
Report Kelly March 17, 2014 12:10 AM GMT
Maybe things have changed , but in 50 years plus of punting on course at horses and dogs I only once had a dispute with a bookie , and most of that time it was numbered tickets only or a nod and my name .  The one occasion was in England , at Royal Ascot , bookie chancing his arm .

I have had problems on line with changed odds , again sharp practice as the default should be if you press the button you get the odds , price changes having to be accepted via seperate action . Once bitten , twice shy , had to go through and check all my accounts to ensure the default was "change in price , review of bet " .

Can appreciate someone getting caught on course with lesser odds , sometimes bets are done at last moment with a scurry to a viewing point . Hopefully it is not a common complaint .
Report lustrumm March 17, 2014 12:15 AM GMT
Could have been a genuine error. After all there was money for the horse. Bookie could have seen money for it on the machine and shortened as you came. No cash bets before or after is irrelevant in this day and age and TBH workrider I am surprised an experienced racegoer such as yourself would make a big deal of it. It goes without saying you check your ticket and probably scrabble the bookie on it if it is not listed (some tickets are generic even in this electronic age)

All that said poor form from the Joe he did not honour the 7/1 after you pointed it out. 7/1 and better was there on the machine after and at the off

It was the wed of 1 off the festival and I had left to go to the irish open wasnt back up till the Saturday went  back with docket actually got 75 back  but the bookies were having a very bad week of it went and complained about it also but hadn't a leg to stand on as I didn't check the docket think it was 3 years ago irish open was in Killarney but I learned my lesson from it

At least he went halfways with me horse was 5/1
Report workrider March 17, 2014 11:10 AM GMT
Lustrumm , I'm not making a big deal of it , its just that when i called the bet the horse was 7/1 and you can be assured he knew its price then , yet while walking away and having noticed the docket and telling him the price I'd asked for and had been given were two totally different ones  . He never even had the decency to say sorry , only , the price was changing as you placed the bet , well how come he didn't tell me then ?...As I said already I normally back with certain bookies who know me and i have no need for a docket as I trust them to pay me what price i ask for ..Having experienced this penny pinching on a number of occasions from bookies recently I'm simply telling people to be one their guard ....

if someone asks you if you had the winner of a certain race you are hardly going to say no if you backed it.
i think prefat spends a lot of time here looking for aftertimers. a collector of aftertimer quotes. sad man.

back up the truck here, lads.

Wonks almost exploded in orgasmic delight when I was deemed to have after-timed on an occasion.  He started threads about 'Del Boy after timing' for a good two months after that.

There is a reason why he gets it back in the neck on here from various people.

Lustrumm is generally sound but his idea that some dockets on course don't have the bookies name is just wrong, they have to give printed named receipts by law.

I like cryptic clues but don't like popular culture so Workriders clue is no help to me,can you come back with a better clue.
