Its the first time I won at the meeting in a while but it was bitterly disappointing all the same.

The death of Our Conor was a terrible start but worse was the terrible injuries suffered by Brian Cooper Ruby Walsh and Daryl Jacob.

I have long been a defender of jockeys on here,it irritates to read the dreadful things written about these brave men who are savagely underpaid,it is why I will reiterate no jump jockey should ever receive a ban, never.

Agree with your points.
Found the actual racing overall strange enough as well as in nearly every race they all seem to finish in a heap. With the possible exception of Faugheen(maybe weak enough race) there didn,t look anything near a superstar.

put this up elsewhere

betting aside i just don't have the buzz about it i once had

thought Vautour and Faugheen where the highlights of the week even thought i was not on either - they where the only wow factor of the week for me

Quevega was great but she only did what we all expected

As for the Championship races the Champion was a good race but what happened Our Conor (and to a lesser extent The New One)  meant it left more questions than answers

Thought the Champion Chase was **** and the Gold Cup absolutely awful

2 really good horses in the World Hurdle first and second - was just a pity to see Big Bucks toiling like that

Have to agree with PF....actually found the whole week quite underwhelming....had to force myself to have a bet.....very strange.
Report GANT007 March 15, 2014 12:51 PM GMT
Have to agree with PF, no spark. Far too many gob****s running down jockeys. I know most of these lads no little about horses or horseracing but it's horrible to listen to.

We have a fair few on here.
Report paulie wallnuts March 15, 2014 1:34 PM GMT
A week marred with injuries to both equine and human stars......its gone so big that nothing else counts only this meeting......so the races are faster.....and the jockeys take more risks......hence the injuries.....and its not likely to get any better in the near future.......
We are blessed to have some of the greatest jockeys that ever rode currently riding......Walsh Geraghty and McCoy definitely fall into that category.......and most jockeys are judged against them ......which may be a trifle unfair......
there are a lot of good to even excellent jockeys that are made look ordinary sometimes by the world class ones.....that's the difference......David Casey isn't a bad rider but hes no ruby.....its hard to believe Ruby wouldn't have won the Gold Cup.....maybe even won on Arctic Fire......poor riders get found out completely at this place......my little pal certainly vindicated my opinion of him.....his ride in a handicap chase there had to be seen to be believed.......
Report mitch leary March 15, 2014 5:13 PM GMT
paulie you seem to have more than a passing interest in "your little pal".
why dont you give the chap a break. it seems personal he must have done something on you.

Nobody in their right mind likes to see a jockey get injured, but wildmans claim that they should be beyond reproach is not only naive but ridiculous, not one jockey had a gun put to his/her head, they knew the danger right from the start of their careers, but if you were to listen to wildman they should be allowed to do what ever they want whenever they please because they're brave men, so are motor cycle riders, but rules are rules end of!.
Report STELLAR MANIPULATOR March 15, 2014 9:32 PM GMT
David Casey may be no Ruby but he did nothing wrong on Arctic Fire and gave the Gold Cup runner up a great ride given he didnt like going left handed.

Agree with most,Very underwhelming Festival.
Report Bigwillystyle March 15, 2014 10:48 PM GMT
Casey is a shambles of a jockey. I had my bet on Briar Hill at 5/1 laid off before the race when i knew who was riding it.  Very average to say the least.
Paulie McCoy one of the greats?  Dont make me laugh!  I didnt see one horse who jumped fluently for him all meeting.  A terrible jockey on at the big meeting.  His mounts constantly making errors. Media fawning over him is sickeneing.  His nous and psotioning during races is awful.  BG and RW miles ahead of him.

One of the most boring festivals and Thursday was probably worse than normal. I had difficulty staying awake for some of it. Going was no way good to soft and times probably backed that up. I blame the going for the number injuries/fallers.

Back from my annual trek to what I consider a great week.

1. I was disapointed with the CH as when Our Conor fell and took out The New One it was only a 3 horse race. Terrific finish all the same with Barry Geraghty at his inspired best on Jezski. Think The New One unlucky though and great pity about Our Conor a young horse with a big future.

2. The Champion Chase was a weak race but great to see small time connections having their day . Sizing Europe ran as well as could be expected and I think they should respect the horse and retire him now.

3. The Stayers Hurdle was a good race with Annie Power possibly losing the race by running too free early on. A good run all the same and the future is bright for her and the winner.

4. While it was not a vintage Gold Cup it was the most exciting I have seen with both Davy Russell and David Casey at there very best. Brilliant stuff.

5. Hidden Cyclone produced probably a career best and went down with honour in the Ryanair. Well done to Shark Hanlon.

6. The puzzle of the week for me was how Champagne Fever having travelled and jumped great didnt win the Arkle by 6 lengths.

From a punting point of view I showed a small loss . If either Cause of Causes, Ned Buntline or Hidden Cyclone had delivered I would have shown a decent profit. Small margins.

Looking forward to next year already.

I went for the first two days as usual and found the crowds manageable and prices not too bad.

Random thoughts on a week that ended on a busy note (story of my life!) leaving me little time for Thurday's and Friday's action:

* Brian Gleeson ("in fair round belly and good capon lined")is becoming a greater buffoon with everyday that passes. His performance before the World Hurdle was notably cringeworthy even by his standards. If he is an example of a new look C4 team god help us all! I often suspect his target is the half-shot ageing female "fan" later that night.
* lots of conspiracy theories abounding about the rather odd finish to the Gold Cup. On the other hand lamenting the poor quality is wrong as every winner gets his name on the cup.
* Taking short prices as always is absolute nuts and I don't care how many "bankers" win
* Stood beside a guy in PP's watching the Gold Cup who backed the winner and he still managed to lose money on the week. Go figure! As long as I've been attending/punting on Cheltenham a single winner at any stage of the week ensures I go (and stay) in front.
* Davy Russell is the consummate pro; Ruby is always close to being sour-faced-closest he gets to being happy in interviews is smart-arsed comments; Tony McCoy should have been leading jock by some distance-I always believe he's revered for brawn over brain and how they manage so many selection errors is beyond me.
* two decent judges told me Henderson ran a lame favourite
* Why did Danny Mullins feel the need to joust with a pacemaker?
* Missed opportunity #1: Tiger Roll-his runner up spot behind Guitar Pete reminded me (in February) of Go Native's run again the Fly in December 2008. Like then the race was over before I realised I had let him go.
* MO #2: Tammys Hill-Irish open pointers are a class apart
* An early impression of TotePool place dividends being generous relative to SP (Faugheen 1.6, Annie Power 1.5) was not borne out over further inspection. No angle in 2014 and even less 12 months earlier.
* Most winners were mentioned in a positive vein pre-race in RP comments. The big occasion demands a higher level of openness perhaps?
* Some very enjoyable posts on the Cheltenham 2014 thread that are interesting to read in the aftermath.

there was distinct lack of quality threads discussing the winnable races at cheltenham on the irish forum. disappointing, IMO through well thought out discussions, that you discover hidden bits of form that may have escaped your attentions first time around. suppose maybe most people were too busy.

And ffs -go back to three days.
Report G Hall March 16, 2014 10:27 PM GMT
The greed that has turned three wonderful days into four not so wonderful has spoiled the festival for me.As a youngster I knew all the race titles, and every race was fascinating, but now it is too drawn out,too many mediocre races, that diminish the appetite,in my opinion.

Seems they have let their standards drop , most people now think its a lesser meeting than in days gone by . More doesn't nessersarilly  mean its better in this case...

Every year I get suckered in on the shorties.

In the preceding month, my head is bombarded with Briar Hill, Ballycasey, Champagne Fever, Annie Power, Bobs Worth etc etc over and over again.  I am something of a sheep when it comes to the hosses and I find it hard to resist the seeds of apparent invincibility that the exerts place in my head.  I like the previews as they get me excited and inform me about the runners and races, but boy do they cost you money as a punter.

I thoroughly enjoyed the few days viewing.  Had a very lucky 35/1 double on Day 1, over half the proceeds of which I happily frittered away by the end of proceedings, despite the odd winner here and there.

Toughest race meeting of the lot to make money at from what I can see.  Not that any of them are easy.

Jaysus Pecker...where were you on the Naps thread when I needed you?  Following the shrewdies best selections on here nearly put me in the poorhouse.

The daily thread was marginally better, but the auld pick a winner in each race milarkey...well a few darts are going to land.  Kudos to Gotchee who did well, and I think someone else who I cannot recall. Most completely flopped.
Report peckerdunne March 16, 2014 10:57 PM GMT
SRY about that. I dont go for long distance views and ante post coups personally.

The daily threads appeared to have held up well i thought as you could know the shape of a race and the going by then.

I have never ever backed anything under 3/1 at Chelt and never will. I consider that to be MENTAL.
