When you consider how few people play Rugby in Ireland they do very well.

I always thought Keith Wood would have made some full forward for the Banner, hurling that is.

Paulie, do you think the Eng/Fr/Wales rest up for 4 years thinking about the RWC, that's ludicrous!
Yesterdays game was every bit as intense as any WC game, fabulous occasion.

Our RWC record isn't good, nobody is claiming it is.  Nor is our 6 Nations record any good; we've only won it once since its started!

Ozymandius our 6 Nations record is excellent,I think we are top in games won since its inception.

Though if you look at the number of games won in the 6 Nations we stack up rather well...Fr 49, Eng 49 Ire 47 Wink

It's just as well we are so compeditive in this competition; it provides the cash flow that keeps our game healthy.  RWC by contrast provides us with diddly squat revenue. I know where my main focus would be, and it would't be on a knockout competition that only rolls around once every 4 years Wink

gordon hamilton nearly put ireland through to a world cup semi final with minutes to go at landsdowne road only for david campese and micheal lynagh to spoil the pahartie.......

Unfortunately France have won 5 Titles and England 4 to our 1, despite a near identical win %.

we needed a big game from sexton to win and he didn't deliver.he has bundles of talent but ffs!get the basics right.that kick off that gave the english a scrum that ultimately led to a try was criminal.tbf it was a great game and the commitment of both teams was savage!

If he was concussed / dazed it does not say a lot for field management to allow him to stay on without being checked .  Often wonder who has the call in these situations , reckon there should be a "formal " backs captain and a "forwards" captain  , apart from the official captain . Putting a kick off into touch is a schoolboy error .

oh he was concussed now.....what a load of cobblers.....typical paddys making excuses when they suffer yet another valiant defeat.....does paddy do any other kind of losing......
ozy....Ireland's main focus is the 6 nations.....because they haven't got an earthly of being competitive in the world cup.....the 3 main teams concentrate nowadays on tests against the big 3 southern hemisphere teams and of course the World Cup......

Paulie, not sure why you think we should be compeditive in RWC's given our relatively limited resources and player pool?

We have disappointed to date in RWC's.  That said, in the last RWC, having beaten one of the SH Big 3, Australia, in the pool stages,  we were favourites to win the QF vs Wales.  Wales lost their SF by a single point to France who in turn lost the Final to NZ by a single solitary point. Small margins.

On the subject of the 'Big 3' we have actually beaten South Africa in 3 out of the last 5 times we have played them.

Progress in the next RWC will depend upon us topping our group containing France and Italy in order to avoid a QF with NZ.  A big ask.

Ozy......a group containing france and Italy.....this is rugby we are on about not soccer.....Italy aren't worth a knob of goats shhiite......
and as for the why should we not be competitive in the world cup given our resources......I never heard that as an excuse in the six nations.....we have as much resources as Wales id imagine.....possibly more....the difference is in the world cup everybody tries....they don't in a lot of other matches....particularly the 6 nations.....that's why Ireland have a good record in the knobb tournament and such a horrible record in the tournament that really matters.....
in all fairness.....not getting to the last 4.....when you cant but be in the last 8 of the world cup is some damning statistic.....I think its fair to say that Ireland have never ever won a meaningful match in the world cup......

I never realised you were such a big Rugby fan, Paulie.

You are right of course, practically no one tries much in the 6 Nations.

the b grade teams like Scotland Ireland and Italy will always do their best.....the top tier teams like france wales and england only try properly when it suits them.....like when they went 10-3 behind against Ireland.....they get their finger out for 5 mins.....go back in front.....and then Ireland wouldn't score again if they played for a fortnight.....

Ozy, if this was a tennis match, it was game set and match to you about 11.00 yesterday morning.  Leave him on court practicing his serve
