Will he be hung out to dry tomorrow if things don't work out for the gambling men.

If I were a steward I would ask Byrnes what instructions he has given Mr OLeary before the race.

I'm hoping to go myself , I've been saying for years that a box with each trainers orders should be placed inside the stewards room , to be opened AFTER the race , it would eliminate so much ...

I am sure he is referring to the dam of the horse and the controversy when she raced Tony.

In all fairness workrider  It Wudnt be a card to get to excited about  also have often wondered why Mullins never has to many runners at this  course

Red House Hill runs in the bumper trained by Charles Byrnes for Mrs Hayes, his dam is Laetitia famously trained by Charles Byrnes for the same owner.

Laetitia ran in a Cork bumper ridden by Michael Purcell, she was a 33/1 shot and a second string, the stable had punted their other horse Alpha something?

All went well as their horse cruised into the lead but Laetitia came out of the pack pulling double, all the way up the straight Purcell did his best to prevent it passing their first string,he just suceeded in the end.

There was uproar as it looked the worst ever, the inevitable inquiry ensued with Byrnes laying all the blame on Mr Purcell, the stewards never asked why Purcell would behave in this way but they accepted Byrnes explanation banned the horse for sixty days and gave Purcell some ludicrous fine.

Byrnes then appealed so a fortnight later landed a monster punt in Kilbeggan, this was giving the stewards the two fingers,it never seemed to bother them,in fact he is now receiving HRI awards.

if my memory serves me correctly.......Purcell couldn't ride the horse properly.....that was all that was in it.....it may well have surprised connections......but I wouldn't say there was anything sinister in it.......Purcell held his hands up....and said he wasn't fit for purpose......he never rode another horse.....so it isn't as if he was telling an untruth.....
Report wildmanfromborneo • February 4, 2014 6:38 PM GMT
You certainly deserved that Marshall Zhukov award.

Not alone was the horse stopped but we all knew why,Paulie and his mates were on the winner.

Byrnes does inspire loyalty in employees, amateurs that sacrifice themselves for him, stable lads laying horses for vast amounts again just for themselves.

They remind me of all those workers in the beef tribunal, doing crooked things for their bosses,no gain for themselves but huge gains for their bosses who naturally knew nothing about this skulduggery.

I think you are reading too much into it wildmanfromborneo......the one mistake Byrnes might have made.....was overestimating the competency of Purcell in the saddle.....he was clearly way worse than they thought.....

paulie do you think your talking to 4 yr old children?!!?..purcell was on a no hoper..all he was supposedly was a passenger..dont be silly

As far as i can see M G Purcell had only two rides before Laetitia and he did have one more after(Anns Island for Bill Durkan).
Tomorrows jock is competent though the two horses that were 4th and 7th last time ran very promisingly.

I am surprised they sent her to Ad Valorem, she was by a miler and Ad Valorem is another miler.

Wouldn,t be too well up on breeding but get your gist,Laetitia beat no less than Mossbank over 3m heavy in Mallow so she seemed to have went against the grain, interesting horse/race alright particulary him sending one up there, get the feeling myself with regards Byrnes if he wants to win he generally does.

One of the worst you'd ever see.

"towards rear, progress in 7th over 4f out, went 2nd early straight, challenged traveling well from 2f out, tenderly handled and swished tail inside final furlong"
---------------------------------------------
-Amateur rider Michael Purcell was hit with a 50-day suspension and a 2,000 fine by the stewards at Cork on Sunday.

Controversy followed division one of the Coolmore Brian Boru (Pro-Am) INH Flat Race in which trainer Charles Byrnes saddled the first two home.

The winner, Alpha Royale, was the shortest of the pair in the betting at 7-1 but it was Purcell´s riding of the runner-up Laetitia that attracted all the attention.

He looked to be traveling at least as well in behind his rival but did not appear to ask his mount for maximum effort and went down by a length.

The inquiry into the race was delayed until after the last race - in which Purcell gave up his ride on Byrnes´ Bosco´s Tune - and lasted some 75 minutes, after which it was found there had been a breach of Rule 212 which deals with taking all reasonable and permissible steps to obtain the best possible placing.

Laetitia was banned from running for 60 days but Byrnes´ explanation that he was not satisfied with the ride given by Purcell was noted by the stewards and no further action taken.
