u known what ?there is always a mccoy type in the dressing room.they will never lie down.its like at 1/2 time when u know the game is gone ,this mccoy type of geezer comes into his own.he will rant and rave and nobody is even fcking listenening to him.
and then early in the 2nd halve ,this little bollix will win a ball he has no right to and all his team mates will say "fck it"its a deep down thing and before u know ,u are within 2 or 3 pts of the oppossition and thats it,u win the game.
it dosent happen often but when it happens, its magical.and do u know what ,this stubborn mccoy like individual is the most humble, unasuming, self deprecating type u could meet after the battle .for some unknown reason ,these types give it everything .

humble unassuming my ass,

McCoy is a horrible obsessed individual that really needs to chill out and give his family a well earned holiday, but oh that might interfere with his obsession....

I would have liked yer man the walker to have got it.  Having a screw or two loose is obligatory for that sport and he is funny to listen to.

I dont think jockeys could be regarded as sportsmen per se. Surely they are only passengers and the horse is the real athlete?

Typical RTE rubbish. No nomination for the Irish Cricket team who as afar as I know were unbeaten all year and Dan Martin for winning a stage in the tour of France. Graeme Mc Dowell won 3 or 4 tournaments during the year. These people are competing on a worldwide stage.

RTE were bombarded by calls from an inebriated man from Newbridge trying to vote for the horse.

24 cans for 24 euro of Hollands finest you couldn't pass that up ozy.

Several good points made here.
Given that this RTE awards event is here to stay  I would suggest a few changes that might make it fit better .
1- Have a Home SPOTY and an International SPOTY and the same for teams
2- Divide into Male and Female categories
3- Organise the voting on a weighted basis between popular vote and a panel of experts and/or sports journalists...the panel to be changed every year or two.
When the popular vote alone decides -minority sports are never going to get a look in no matter how meritorious any performer may have been and there's a natural bias towards the big national games that get hundreds of pages of coverage every week in national and local media.
