Anyone reading his column would not bet odds on Sure Reef, also doubt if Bosman Rule will start odds on in the bumper.

Noel Meade can only muster one runner against these hot shots, none in the bumper( nothing new there ) none in the hurdles just Corbally Ghost in the Beginners Chase.

He is not the only one, where are all the other big stables,Willie Mullins frightens them all off and then has well paid private schooling sessions.

Leaving Mullins dominance aside the whole structure of the national hunt season has become nearly totally geared towards the spring festivals. Many good horses will run at Kempton and Leopardstown over xmas and then you won't see many of them again until the holy grail of Cheltenham in March as the cotton wool comes out in earnest.

So many races that were very competitive back in the 70's 80s through the 90's have become total non entities, take the Racing Post Chase (racing plus) for instance which use to be an extremely competitive and often a good guide to the Gold Cup and Grand National has become nothing but an ordinary run of the mill h/cap chase.

Desert Orchid won n 1990, Docklands Express won it and then placed in the Gold Cup and Grand national all in a short space of time, The Fellow was 3rd before going on to win the Gold Cup, Royal Athlete ran 4th before placing in the Gold Cup, and take Rough Quest as the perfect example of what National Hunt racing use to be like before the mollycoddling trainers infested the sport, he won the Racing Post Chase in 1996 then ran 2nd to Imperial Call in the Gold Cup before going to Aintree to win the grueling Grand National all within the space of just 34 days.

If you suggested that to one of these modern day trainers they would probably go into cardiac arrest at the sheer thought of it?

None of them would even contemplate an entry in the Racing Plus chase today as they think you need a fresh horse for Cheltenham?, my many examples above kicks yet another racing myth right into touch.
Battle hardened horses reined supreme back in the good old days, Jodami a fine example of a horse who contested nearly every big chase through the whole season and always held his form.

As Neil.D said on the Morgiana thread what have these trainers and owners got to lose anyway?, most of their horses have no stud value anyway so what difference does it make if the horse gets beaten, its not as if they have a reputation to protect in a strict sense of the word.

Back in the late 70's horses like Sea Pigeon, Monksfield, Night Nurse took each other on regularly during the season, beating each other on a regular basis.

Sadly todays national hunt trainers and owners have become almost clones of their flat counterparts.

Spot on Lads, NH needs a Mark Johnston type trainers that`s for sure.
Report Arklearkle November 16, 2013 12:33 PM GMT
The last thing we need is a Mark Johnston type here - no thanks. Silver have to agree with you 100% on what is happening. There is something like 16K available to the 2nd horse in tomorrows Morgiana. It beggars belief that no one wants this money.

Yep that's the big problem, the whole season is based around a few spring festivals basically and trainers are happy to get the horses ready at home so you see less and less of them.

Also with the prize money on offer over here and the fields usually being small / very small in our top races i am baffled as to why English trainers do not target more of them

Again we see another Willie benefit tomorrow ...Terrible state of affairs ....
Report Santry November 16, 2013 7:26 PM GMT
There is a huge amount of taxpayers money eaten up supporting what is a rich mans game. The customer i.e. the racegoer/punter seems to be an afterthought. Tomorrows farce is example of this. Big money on offer for what should be exercise canter.
Why do the Racing Post pay Willie Mullins money for a column that is a recidal of a bunch of cliches?. He is a master of saying nothing.
Report olddesperado November 16, 2013 8:46 PM GMT
its certainly not an ideal situation but a virus can hit any yard and if that happens willie there might be a lot of big races for horses that wouldnt normally be good enough.
Im also sure some owners will feel less favoured than others and move on to where they feel they might be main owner.
Report olddesperado November 16, 2013 8:53 PM GMT
ego , paranoia and jealously can follow high earning individuals and it mightnt take much to see some falling outs.
Give it 3 years and he might have rich rich and maybe one other big owner left.

Nicholls in england found the same keeping owners of similar horses happy.
Report olddesperado November 16, 2013 8:55 PM GMT
similar type horse,s happy  ^^^^
Report workrider November 16, 2013 9:05 PM GMT
I think its a case of him having most big owners as it is olddesperado , they all know the score , he has several yards , so the dreaded virus might knock him back , but would not necessarily kill him off , unlike others who might just have the one yard ..Every big owner seems to be happy taking a piece of Willies pie ....

Fair chance he won,t get the nov chases and without wishing any ill on him(it isn,t in any way deserved) be good to see the smaller fellas get a big pot particulary Nolan.
Report frankalsoran60 November 16, 2013 9:25 PM GMT
PA i think paul nolan will get a nice pot with Defy Logic tomorrow.[at least i hope so]
Report pa lapsy November 16, 2013 9:32 PM GMT
Haha hope so too Frank and not just from a betting point of view, just seems one of them horses with a quirky character, fairly talented as well, have a bit of a soft spot for that type as you don,t see them too often. Elliott might get the other one, couldn,t fail to be impressed with Don Cossacks Galway run.

silvergreaser's point is 100% spot on, gone is the day of the good horses taking each other on.....way too many graded races during the season and in cheltenham where there is a grade 1 for every conceivable trip, the morgiana tomorrow is an utter joke....remember being in Kempton and backing see more to win the rp chase,..4 day festival has killed it imo
Report olddesperado November 16, 2013 9:56 PM GMT
spot on , el gato.
Used to love working out if certain horses would improve or not for stepping up or coming down in trip, all part of the conundrum.
Now an improver on good ground is the only fly in the ointenment to the short priced good thing in the championship races in the main grade 1s.
Report by purpose November 16, 2013 10:03 PM GMT
If you check the previous winners of the 3 graded races in Punchestown you will find that Mullins has not dominated these races over the last 9 years. Was surprised myself but has won the Morgiana twice and the two chases only once.

Have to agree guys only a "GENIUS" like Wille Mullins could train those two ex french selling platers to win the first 2 races at Navan.

The French must be laughing all the way to the bank, surely the Irish national hunt breeders are suffering since the French breds have become so powerful?.

Black River the horse who beat Vantour in France would probably have hacked up on his English debut for Nichols but for falling?.
