Is everyone going to persist with the pretence that these are unfair, persist that this nominal charge will stop people getting their medication, this is just emotional nonsense the fact it is essential to charge something.

We have to get away from this idea that we are entitled to stuff for nothing,it brings out the worst in people and is always abused.
Medical cards are the same,as it stands these cards are now so valuable that people are deliberately dropping their income to get one, another side effect is they over use them, the slightest twinge and they are at the doctors.

There is also widespread abuse of both systems, doctors claiming millions off the state for dead or dormant patients, medical card holders selling drugs they got for nothing.

Anyone who has had the misfortune to be at a free bar will know the folly of giving people something for nothing.

Contrary to populat belief Ireland has universal healthcare thanks to the medical card but only for 50% of the population.

I work on the Harley Street of my particular town and the sight of a single cash customer vising the medics is a rare sight indeed.

labelling is invidious but your average patient sucks on a woodbine before entering, leaves moments later with the green slip for the legal narcotic of choice and wanders across to the chemist sucking on the next woodbine.

the lobbyists and apologists target the exceptional deserving cases when someone tries to right this madness and the freeloaders roar their approval in the background.

around here, the masses spit at labour politicians now for now playing along with the same system that is also bringing america to its knees.

Don't worry -Fianna Fáil will be back shortly to fix everything ....or failing that Sinn Féin.
It could get better again.
With the Independents almost the most popular option in the opinion polls -they could organise to form a united group under the inspired leadership of Shane Ross and go into coalition with SF to give us a Shane Féin government.
(Or if not Shane Ross - Stephen Hero.)
