Means test Social Welfare-A sad state of affairs that it can't be done due to technology constraints,Michael O' leary etc receive child benefit(He says it's a joke).

Graduation Tax- Scrap Fees and Tax Graduates, why subsidise their education here but skills are used elsewhere-Ok easy counter,we can't supply them with jobs.
5 % of their Gross Income for ten years would more than compensate for lack of fees.A lot of College students would be in favour of this system. Not really realistic with current financial constraints.

Appoint John Crown as Minister for Health and cut half the administration lemons in the HSE,over paid and under utilised middle management in particular.

Discard Austerity-No economy has ever managed to cut its way to growth. The majority of the EU countries are going to fail to make their targets of 3%deficit in line with the programme for stability and growth. This can't happen because of the parameters of our bailout but could be negotiated if our leaders had some ambition or creativity.

It's also difficult to implement or create self funding(due to our fiscal deficit targets) stimulus initiatives but the ministers should be around a table every morning discussing options rather than cutting ribbons etc.

One of our major difficulties is we no longer have control of our monetary policy, the Germans are too influential at the Central Bank in Frankfurth and their fear  of hyper-inflation ensures that quantitative easing or a proper recapitalisation of banks will never take place-this will sadly lead to years of stagnation in the euro zone and as a small open, export led economy we are to a large extent dependent on a global recovery.

These are drastic times so drastic measures are needed.

Scrap children's allowance for any child over four and replace with a school attendance payment, this immediately stops the millions leaving our shores and prevents the wholesale fraud now in the ascendancy.

Scrap free legal aid, this is probably the biggest scandal of all, bogus cases being taken just to keep the legal profession in funds.

Scrap compensation explain to people misfortune can happen without you becoming rich, not alone will this save billions but it damages the scammers and the criminal classes.

Scrap all foreign aid.we are broke it is berserk to be borrowing money to give to someone who could do the borrowing themselves and its all done so the corpulent pension laden Joe Costello can travel the world feeling good about himself.

Scrap lump sum payments for anyone retiring, its immoral the sums being paid out to cronies.

The bankers have proved to be useless so cut the pay of all their employees by 50 per cent and make sure no one gets paid more than 60 grand.

Cut the income tax rates to stimulate growth, you have to make it worthwhile for people to work.

When we get through these cuts we should then leave the EU and repudiate the debts they heaped on us,bring back the punt and let inflation take care of all the personal debt.

Bring back Fianna Fail. Happy times.

Wildman, some of your suggestions are valid there but I suggest you read some case studies on economies where Hyperinflationn became endemic because your last line is over simplified.

Hyperinflation even

How about some galloping inflation, that went on throughout the seventies.

I have some sympathy for the buy to let investor but they have to accept they had a bet and it lost, the young people with mortgages must be looked after and I would not allow any of them be evicted.

One unfortunate couple were evicted and had to move back in with their parents only to watch their apartment being rented out to a foreign couple whose rent is being paid by the state, that just can't be right.

Simplified indeed.

Inflation is acceptable at reasonable levels(0-2%) and even higher when an economy is running way below it's GDP*(Potential GDP)
However when an economy is operating at its GDP* level, further inflation leads to creation of unsustainable bubbles.

As for devaluing the currency, this can only work if you hold vast(at least a trillion dollars)reserves of foreign currencies to fight off hedge fund vultures(IE JP with the peso and George Soros/Joe lewis with sterling).
A miss judged devaluation would lead to dollarisation and hyperinflation taking over in an economy and a recovery would take decades.

The amount of strategic defaulting that is currently going on in Ireland is astronomical. The unemployment rate in Ireland peaked in 20011 and there should be a direct correlation between unemployment and arrears but not so here.

Anyone talking about debt forgiveness-have to remember how it will be funded..
It's a dog eat dog world and put simply if people valued and bought an asset with a 2.5% yield and at a multiple of 8 or more times their annual income,it was their call.

think it was misreported premier. the correct figure is a cut of 1.5%. 800,000. of which 640,000 is cut from racing and 160,000 from greyhounds.more  for them to squander.

Not an expert on this stuff but it seems that if we went back to the punt, we could devalue our currency and then lower our interest rates taking a bit of pressure off. If they cut the interest rates right now as it stands, there would be massive inflation in Germany and France(who are ticking along quiet nicely) and they would become uncompetitive.

I'm not sure this can be solved as there are too many divergent interests that barely intersect at all. I'd say the Union will break up sooner rather than later.....or they'll at least scale it right back. We got some nice roads, but the last few years have been pretty crap.
