Report BJG September 30, 2013 11:57 AM BST
PATSY BYRNE, a prominent horse and greyhound owner whose familiar navy and pink silks were carried to success by White Star Line in the Kerry National at Listowel earlier this month, passed away suddenly on Monday morning.

A native of Duagh in County Kerry, Byrne divided his time between Duagh and Surrey and was a regular at major sporting fixtures.

As well the success of White Star Line, trained by Dessie Hughes, Byrne landed the Northumberland Plate with the Jonjo O'Neill-trained Tominator earlier this year.

Byrne also enjoyed massive success as a greyhound owner and trainer. Among his best greyhounds were Irish Derby winner Cool Performance and English Derby winner Ballinderry Ash. He also landed the Coursing Derby with Big Interest.

Byrne was chief executive of construction and engineering company Byrne Group PLC,  race sponsors at the Cheltenham Festival and the company involved in the construction of the new Centre Court at Wimbledon.
