Workrider a true patriot, I thought you would try an offload that Trevor Croly on us but instead you quite rightly go for the obvious choice.
I know they paid him a lot of money but he did a good job with a poor squad should have been let work through his contract. |

There was a Frank Kearney I knew from around Clonmel,he owned a few horses Fish Quiz Skelum being two that spring to mind,died a couple of years ago.

Dont think it matters, players are nt there, bar Wes Hoolohan everyone would prob av picked the same team v Sweden giv or take
Trap worked wonders to qualify em for the euros i think, style of play was shocking but it got em results. There is gonna be a depressing few years ahead i think no matter who takes over Defenders slow, no creativity in midfield, wasteful wingers, Robbie still scorin but legs nt there and d rest still have it to prove |

I would in no way be disappointed if Martin O'Neill was brought in, but for me the man for the job is definitely Big Mick. Backed him at 9-1 after the Germany defeat, when I hoped that would finally be the end of Trap, and will probably top up now. He would surely relish another bite at it? Especially as they have done the right thing and vacated the seat early enough for a new man to have a proper bite of the cherry for the next qualification series. I was firmly in the Keane camp during Saipan, its a pity we don't have some players of his ability and drive now, but Mick has since confirmed himself to be a very good manager. He has consistently got the best from average groups of players, which makes him the perfect choice for the task at hand. Hopefully no long drawn out process here, just get him in, quick.

As many have said, will be a thankless job, talent not there and won't be for the foreseeable future, O Neill a shoe in but don't expect the style to change much from Trap if O Neill does get it.

Martin o'Neill is the only man for a job by a long way.
He brought a magic to Celtic that was lost for most part of a decade. He resigned from the club in 2005 after a glorious period for the club ended for O'Neill with two dramatic late goals for Motherwell to beat Celtic 2-1 on the last day of the season while Rangers won and unexpectedly took the title. The entire season o'Neill had been dealing with huge private pressures. O'Neill has the second best winning record at Aston Villa in the last twenty years and more having being in charge for the most matches of any previous manager in that time. He resigned again this time because he wouldn't accept the sales of his best players. O'Neill probably needed a few years off after Aston Villa but the experience he had at Sunderland would only have led to O'Neill hardening his resolve once more to prove to himself how good and still hungry a manager he is in this era. He would be fresh from that break and if he is still of strong mind then this job would be the perfect step. A former GAA footballer and Northern Ireland footballer well respected and accepted by all communities in the same mold as many sportsmen from the North east of Ireland are. An International manager needs a spark and a love for the country they are managing in order to create the type of magic it takes to get a small country like Ireland to the point of the latter stages in world cup finals. The people need to stop dividing opinions for the sake of it and actually stand United and support the cause. Average and good players will always respond with that extra thirty per cent needed to a man that will breed the right results in the handful of huge games it takes to qualify. Once that is reality the Irish public will get what it is craving. The huge island party celebration that comes with victories against top nations on the biggest stage of world football. 4/7 The bookies are being generous |

one can readily argue that the calibre of player is not there at the moment and it does not matter who we appoint.
the goal is to qualify for the next finals tournament. over the last 5 days I have dipped into live footage of approx 15 games and the standout feature for me, is that outside of a few like spain and germany, the teams in europe you would rank maybe 7 to 27, there is precious little between them. most of these teams do have quality mixed with passengers as the lack of strength in depth is apparent. therefore with a good organiser who can motivate we can easily accomplish a runner up spot in qualifying competitions. i would have no objection to martin o neill, though i do know both MON and his sidekick John Rob, have had serious off field issues in the recent years, issues they did not have at celtic, and that may hinder them. perhaps the less rigourous schedule of international management may suit them. as the most successful previous managers were outsiders, you could consider casting the net elsewhere. i would be a keano fan, his management CV is heading in the same direction as his contemporary Lothar Matthaus, and management may not suit his personality. how about a bold call.......would the part time element of the job be tempting to someone like Sir Alex Ferguson....he never struct me as one to rest on his laurels. |

Cant see him getting off the sofa to manage us , plus it would be peanuts to him no matter what we payed him , and if i remember correctly , from his Coolmore days . He wanted HIS few bob...No possibility of that happening imo....

Shows how much people here know about football. Peddling out the same names. Look for a guy like Marcelo Bielsa, a man capable of getting the team playing football. An excellent coach. International football is cack. if we could get someone in who at least gets the team playing football and retaining possesion we would qualify for a few tournaments.

Its well known that the FAI have no funds,(just enough to pay their own gigantic salaries), so straight away this narrows the field to the un-employed. They cannot afford to pay any compensation to a club, so any one with a club job is most likely excluded. Huge number of un-employed ex footballers with the Irish connection. The FAI might be able to afford to put a group together again such as Houghton, Whelan (maybe) and a few more safe hands !!, to draw up a short list and then pick from that. Brian Kerr was very unlucky in his term as manager, but they will hardly go back to him, so fwiw I think Dave O Leary is my best guess as I feel O Neill is perhaps overrated,(definitely overrated by himself).
