Would agree with the odds. If we vote to retain this totally undemocratic institution then we deserve everything we get.

Yah your so right workrider, and the idea of this referendum which is going to cost over 20mill., is a half brained idea from dear leader to say the least. This the guy that said last week that he wants to get a report 'for meself' on Priory Hall. Priory Hall has been a problem for four years.The fact that Dear Leader has no report, shows what he cares. Gene Kerrigan again wrote an excellent piece about Dear leader in last Sundays Indo. I listened to some guy on Radio1 today and he said even if the Seanad is abolished in this vote it cannot be abolished before 2016. So why the rush to spend 20million. I have a feeling that when Dear Leader and his cohorts, supported on this by Sinn Fein start talking about this Referendum that the people are going to vote in anger against Dear Leader and big boyz club, big time.

1/3 to pass now and even that is a good price. the more Politicians open their mouths on the topic the more people want to vote to have less of them of any denomination or house

Reading this morning that they don't show up to many of the votes and then all crammed in to the one to save their own skin pissed me off.

The feeble excuse they put forward was that they only voted on things that they have knowledge of or are passionate about, but as they are being paid they are surely duty bound to inform themselves on the various issues that they know are going to come though their hands, especially the social ones. They pass themselves off as some sort of esoteric group on a higher plain, but what I got this morning was nothing but a group of people who were too comfortable, lazy and completely self-interested.

Not sure what to do now, don't really like some of Enda's approaches re refusing to enter debates and gagging politicians under his banner, but I'm not sure this crowd are the antidote that they claim to be either. 'Reform the Seanad?' and all the expense that that would incur, couldn't be sure the fckers would even show up, probably busy with one of their 19 shadow directorships. Most of them don't deserve that pension, and that is starting to become my prime consideration, doubt I'll bother my arse voting, though.

1/14 to be abolished now as every poster apart from the way off original poster predicted.
Still think it's short sighted,FG have even admitted now that the saving will be nothing like €20 million.
The saving will be miniscule in comparison to any future correction in legislation or adjustments in fiscal policy that a reformed Seanad could have opposed rather than to further centralise power.
I think people are voting simply for less politicians rather than looking at the possible implications.

It is essentially a proposal to centralise power amongst those who have been given a mandate from the people. The people aren't always the best judge though and the idea of the Seanad I'd assume was to give talented people a platform to air their ideas without having to thrust themselves fully into the political game. If the Seanad had been doing its job, the effect of its abolition would be a kind of brain drain.

If we get rid of the Seanaid which seems likely what exactly would the political implications be?, the fact is it was and still is just a half way house for wannabes or has beens.

I knew 6 weeks ago when I asked my Wife. She wouldn't read a paper, follow politics or have any view on current affairs but the prospect of giving 2 fingers to the Politicians gave here no hestitation--> abolish.

Everyone I have asked since has said the same.

Much and all as I hate to be seen to be giving the Govt. a vote of confidence (and that is how it will be construed) I agree with them all. Good riddance to bad rubbish

Everyone should ask themselves did they have a vote in the last Seanad election. If the answer is no then surely they should vote for its elimination now. Likewise if they had a vote surely it is non-democratic that they should have a vote when most others do not have one. To me it is simple.

Fairly obvious that the electorate were confused by the ludicrous ballot papers,some thought they were voting no to the Seanad.

Whilst I hate Polls it would be unfair to say they got it way wrong when 'twas confusion that done them.

I'd say Mrs Lustrumm intended to vote to abolish the senate but more than likely voted No.

I hope to hell they voted No to the new court of appeal which will just be a new way for legal people to extract more money from the state.

Result will be No, prob about 55% to 45%, Good call by the op and fair play to anyone who layed at 1/14

i voted to abolish it but it was confusing..with all the irish slop written on it as well.it struck me when i seen the paper how confusing it was.typical irish.piss up and brewery spring to mind..id say enda and fg are worried now.

Close but not quite wildman :) Mrs Lustrum came in after nine last night and despite hard driving would not go back out to vote. And therein lies the tale imo. Apathy and a superb late campaign by the no side got up on the line.
I voted yes but am still happy enough because it will be sweet to see the Government squirming now. This is a big defeat for them and as I said at the start the best asset the NO side had was Richard Brutal. To think that FG nearly made him leader. I met him one time in Trinity before the last election and what a cold person he is. Don't know how he is a Politician.

As a punter for once it has come my way for being skint as I would have backed yes at any price down to 1/3 and it was there for ages. I cursed missing the 4/7. Either way if I had money I would be skint today.

w.r.t. Kavvie I agree the slips needed reading but on the flip side if one did not know what a yes vote meant and could not take 2 minutes to read the slips (The green and white to distinquish what was what) then one has no business voting in the first place.

We all learnt to read at school and all are over 18

lust people are strange they want a simple paper.the paper was simply to confusing.i know and you know if you read it, its  clear but people dont engage their minds in such instances.they expect total clarity.in this case they didnt get it,and it resulted in a skewed result in my opinion.YES on a poll card  would indicate to many people to leave things as they are.NO means negative and do away with.in this poll it meant the opposite?

No bet-more of a personal opinion than a strong betting opinion and the polls released a few days after I posted showed 59% in favour when excluding the undecided.Can anyone ever remember Polls being that far wrong?

I wonder how many of those polled on that occasion actually voted ?

Think the key was the undecideds that got swayed by the coherent NO argument from the likes of John Crown late on. I listened to a debate on Wednesday on PAt Kenny and Crown tore Richard Brutal a new one. I still voted yes but in hindsight I am glad I was on the wrong side
