Neither appear to have any bright 2 yr olds and can hardly buy a winner between them all season

john oxx has really gone. prendergast was nothing great anyway was he. been around a long time.

Prendergast gone for a few years now. Not so sure about Oxx. Lyons and Halford have replaced Prendergast and Collins. Weld will be next to fall down the ladder. I can see Murtagh making giant strides in the next few years.

i totally disagree..oxx has stated a lot of his 3yrolds are backward and have taken longer than he thought he,s also said he has no superstar in the yard he,ll be back as soon as he gets 2-3 decent horses but I bet he has a few winners in the next month?..as for weld..the man is still at the top I don't understand how anyone thinks hes on the decline after galway?..he only has 5 jumps horses so jumps wise hes not at the races but he.s still in the top 3 on the flat in ireland.

I agree regrading John Oxx. He has always been streaky in terms of top class horses in his care but when he has one he sure knows how to train it. Far from finished, just like D. Weld
Report silvergreaser August 10, 2013 8:16 AM BST
Welds problem to me is he's a very cautious trainer, if he has a good one the cotton wool comes out, Bolger makes a mockery of Welds overly protective approach and has proven time and time again that if you train them hard run them often you toughn them up and in most cases Bolgers horses seem to hold their form right through the whole season, Dawn Approach is running in a mouth watering Marois on Sunday his 5th start already, with Intello and Moonlight Cloud in opposition promises to be a very informative race.

As for John Oxx trade places with Aidan O'Brien and he too would firing in the winners from all angles, good horses keep you in the limelight.

Kevin Prendergast is getting on in years.
Report mitch leary August 10, 2013 9:24 AM BST
its not that long ago that bolger went through a lean few years. so dont write off oxx. you cant do it without the firepower.

Trainers are largely horse dependent .  Which is owner driven . Henry hit a spell in England when he couldn't train a donkey derby winner , but he resurfaced . Form is temporary , class is permanent .  Luckily in Ireland we have had a succession of excellent trainers  , John Oxx and Dermot Weld are still among those , but like a lot of us they are not getting any younger .

What did Weld do at Galway?

Won a listed race a couple of maidens, some of which should be scrapped from the programme, a few low grade handicaps, a bumper and a novice hurdle. Galway was a failure for him despite the numbers and the year of planning.

Kevin Prendergast is 81 years of age.

Oxx is a genius trainer but the problem is the aga khan is keeping most of his best ones and better breed ones in France
Report Santry August 10, 2013 2:28 PM BST
Oxx doesn't appear to have a decent horse at present but can train one. Weld to me is the trainer in total freefall. Seems to spent his entire year trying to be the "king of Galway". Sad to see given that this is a guy that has trainer the has won Group and Classic winners all over the world. Also needs to be noted that all the men mentioned are old men that in normal careers would be retired on age grounds.

Nice to see some people finlly coming around to this point of view^^^ I've been wandering what the fuss was about for ten years. He's done about as much as Luca Cumani in the last 7 or 8 years. he carries on with a lot of the crap Prescott does in early summer in Ireland, but gets none of the stick.
Report Kelly August 10, 2013 2:39 PM BST
Training horses also revolves around owners wishes / aspirations . Always in the backgound that .
Report tony57 August 10, 2013 2:42 PM BST
what did weld do at galway?..silly that...?11 winners that's what did any of the others win 11?..remember he does not have the numbers he used too..he won the big race at ascot last season with a horse that's injury prone..if he has the horse the man is still one of the best..imo anyway..
Report neill d August 10, 2013 2:43 PM BST
He has the support of what is pound for pound, the best breeding operation in the world in Juddmonte. He is due another good one from them. But I wonder why it is they don't send him as many as they might. The way he campaigned such a promising horse in Stunning View a couple of years ago might have something to do with it.
Report Distant View August 10, 2013 2:52 PM BST
I am well aware of his numbers but he failed to collect any of the bigger races and the most valuable was the handicap on Saturday. This is a poor return for a man with plenty of ammo and who trains so many horses for no meeting other than Galway.

It is laughable how he wants his annual ego massage over these 7 days and Ballydoyle barely even notice the meeting. Each to their own but what he does at Galway lessens him as a trainer rather than provides even the slightest example of greatness.
Report GANT007 August 10, 2013 2:55 PM BST
Juddmonte cutting right down now..........Big changes at Ferrans lock where all the yearlings are broken in and pre trained. DKW might have no 2yo from them next year.
Report neill d August 10, 2013 3:02 PM BST
I heard that GANT, very sad to hear. Apparently none of the family have any interest at carrying it on. There will be some scramble to get those broodmares. Coolmore, Qatar, Godolphin and all the other big Arab, South African, American and Australian owners will all be in. Lot of money slushing around Aussie racing and if they got hold of some of these, they could finally get some of the class to back that up.
Report dj876 August 10, 2013 3:02 PM BST
I think the majority of Punters realise the merits(or lack of)of Dermot Weld 's annual power show.
Where does Galway stand in real terms of Flat racing??It's not even on the radar.
He should be aiming at having runners at Goodwood that week and Epsom,Newmarket,Ascot etc.The only thing Galway peaks at is socializing.
It's a shambles that he keeps his best juveniles and 3yo's for maidens at Galway and reveals his egotistical and superficial nature.
Report GANT007 August 10, 2013 3:07 PM BST
I wouldn't mind him training a 2yo winner for me at Galway and then winning a group 1 later on in the year.

Neilld.......The staff in ferrans lock have heard another outfit want to buy the entire stock.......the Qatar boys are favs.
Report neill d August 10, 2013 3:15 PM BST
That is what I was getting at with Stunning View DJ, what kind of preperation for the Goffs million was an egg and spoon race around a greyhound track beating Banyan Tree(one of the most useless horses ever to tarken the gate of Rosegreen).

Sorry to hear that GANT, I struggle to warm to Qatar, Redvers and his toffee nosed paint throwing pals.

glad to see im not the only one bemused by the weld galway show........why would u run your well bred 2 year olds on that mountain on heavy ground.......baffling
