While not purporting to adjudicate on the debate that has flared up here -I would have to say that I agree with the thrust of wmfb's initial post.
Hypocrisy can be found all along the ideological spectrum but I have always found  the hypocrisy that emanates from 'the left' particularly odious  and that would be for the reasons enunciated by the OP.

Carl Sagan had the right ideology, everyone who hasn't should watch his magnificent cosmos series.
