Weekend GAA 25th/26th May

Nice write up Mc. I hope it runs for you. Don't have a strong view myself but dislike backing big handicaps against 'weaker' teams. I would be against Donegal this weekend. I think it will be tight, but at the prices Tyrone appeal in what I see as a 50/50 game. Perhaps a lay is safest, as I see the draw as a possibility.

yeah,i will be laying donegal with a view to trade if it gets dicey.i just cant see donegal having that savage hunger they had last yr.imo they have only 2 maybe 3 top class players up front.also the league form was very hit and miss which to me hints at the wrong attitude within the team. hart is a shrewd opperator and will have a game plan for the way donegal play and he got the players to implement it and express themselves when in procession.

as regards limerick hcp,not for me.it is a big ask for galvin to bring his a game here but i wish him well because hes a fabulous footballer.tbh i doubt he will finish the game .

tbh rock,i would not be surprised if london mugged sligo here but i dont see much percentage  in the hcp.i would rather be on the straight win but the odds compiliers are taken no chances here.the problem with london is,they can collapse like a cheap desk chair.i wont be involved here but gl with it any way.

I agree i think Sligo could be here for the taking. I know one of the lads on the panel and he said they were "worried" which i thought was odd to come out with. Also Kilgallon a Mayo lad that started to play for them has been excellent this season but never travelled because his Mayo side play tonight. They are flying him over to London after tonight's game they have said he won't be involved so he is a loss.

Not always a fan of handicaps either lads, particularly backing big teams to wallop smaller ones. I'd want a very very strong idea of how the thing is going to play out before stepping in. I'd consider 7 points a massive lead in Gaelic Football at intercounty level,if a fella was on Cork -7 for example, Cork could ease down in injury time, drop 2 points or a soft goal and still effectively win just as easily as if they had won by eight. I think you'd want to think a team was 10 points better to bet them minus 7 and so on.

cork to score first goal massive at 4/5 the only thing that stuck out at me for weekend.agree re handicaps when massive underdogs.clare and cork last yr case in point.cork put game to bed early but only bt handicap by one point despite being totally dominant.cork might win by 4 or 14 v limerick.and equally impressive or unimpressive in each case.id have a feeling sligo will bt handicap but not strongly enough to have a bet.

cork have 5 rookies here from u21 and beleive me they will get a lovely welcome to championship football

Never been to a game at Ballybofey but always thought it was a very tight pitch. However, according to wikapedia it is half a metre longer and 2 metres longer than Croke Park and considerably bigger than all other grounds. Is this right?

Not sure on that one paddletoe , long time since I paced it pre match . Doubt its bigger than Croke though  , you cant believe everything you see on the Wiki trail .

The odds today seem a bit skew given Donegals form and the comments I heave heard emanating from some GAA afficionados who are more up to date than I am with current situation . Must be a tight match , would not be surprised to see a replay .

I'd be loathe to oppose Donegal today I think McGuinness has been gearing these guys up for the Championship and wasn't overly perturbed by the league, yes Tyrone had a good league run and maybe the loss of Stephen O'Neill cost them victory against the Dubs but in the semi Kildare really should've have been 6 or 7 in front at half time but typical Kildare for all their dominance they hit a succession of easy wides and let Tyrone off the hook.

Donegal all the way for me I think these guys are now finely tuned for a formidable defence of their All Ireland title?.

From your post paddletoe you must be on an all night vigil pre match . Do you think you will need the prayer mat as much as that ?

I can be a bit of a night owl Kelly when there is sport on during the night and the basketball went to overtime. Donegal look very short in what looks like an even money match. Only thing putting me off having a decent bet on Tyrone was the size of the pitch so just checked it out of curiosity. Cant believe its bigger than Croke Park but thats what it says.

Tipp players attitude is terrible. They are strolling around the field and providing no support for players on the ball.

Typical GAA rules there.....you can score point with the fist but not a goal

I agree with you diamond joe. All the GAA would have to do to make it a great game again is make 2 basic and easily enforcable rules,no scoring with your hand whatsoever,and if you receive a hand pass then you have to kick it.

Would'nt be critical of the Tyrone keeper. He had a poor day with his shooting but he is always going to be taking frees from a distance where he is likely to miss a good few. Just unfortunate he missed them all on the one day.

Been saying for years that most county teams should convert an outfield player as their goalkeeper and give him the role of taking the frees. No reason for goalkeepers to be doing hard training. They should be practising frees non stop at training sessions. All counties will have a top class club freetaker who is not up to county standard. So lots of options for converting players into goalkeepers provided they are a certain size.

I think Bryan Sheehan is one of the best placed ball free takers. When he was not getting his starting place on the Kerry team he should have been playing in goals.

Have to be honest I fancied Donegal big time today but I wasn't overly impressed, 2 goals at vital moments in the game gave them that edge but I thought they struggled badly in midfield, anyone like me think the same?

I've been saying it for a while having watched training in Sligo that it was very ordinary looking copared when i've watched Rovers trained say. Gant shouted it down but good to see O'Hara come out and say it like it is. He spoke the truth and it's a breath of fresh to not have someone sit on the fence the whole time.

Kavvie he's right though, sure he would have loved to be there. Why did he bring in a Mayo player in Feb (IIRC) but told O'Hara one of the best players the county ever produced he had to be there from Oct/Nov? O'Hara knows the training Rovers doing andeven the rugby team he knows the GAA training is not up to this standard and i believe that is what he was getting at, no reason to lie.

You watch Sligo training and they have a Roscommon man playing in Mayo lining out for Sligo who you name as Kilgallon before the game BUT Kilcullen after the game....

(........however little secret.....as it happens and pure co-incidence I was a relative by-stander in a conversation in Galway about a week ago where the two friends were chatting about GAA and this match as well - one said that he knew for a FACT that Sligo GAA had contacted some Mayo and I think Leitrim county board people with regard to some logistics about playing in Ruislip. One of the lads remarked, "I wonder have they got their places on the ferry booked yet its a only a week to the match". Had a bit of a chuckle, but noted to myself "does dis-organisation off the pitch mean dis-organisation on it; I decided it didn't and veered away from a London punt...).

Not clear above.....meaning Sligo had only recently contacted other Connacht counties about Rusilip logistics with the game almost upon them.

Lads i'm from there i told you London would beat Sligo and they did, i have my finger in a lot of pies and this is one. What do you mean i wa not able to name Kilcullen before the match i said it on this thread.

i have experience of ruislip.a gluepot of a pitch.a hard spot to play in.and the facilitys are ...different....

I'd never diss London's facilities, they're not even from a place that has heard of the game nevermind play it. People asking why are they in it next

Downside of this of course......is no killing to be made on my little "pet team" Leitrim beating Sligo yet again at tasty prices. I was already lining it up....hoping for 7/4, 9/4 maybe better. Ah well.

i think the way to beat donegal is to play them at their own game.2 up front and leave 13 men behind the ball.give no space and get in their faces,reduce it to a brutal physical encounter and see what they have got under their finger nails,and a dead ball specialist is a must.

They've loads pal, they'll have to be outclassed and there are only two who can do that, Kerry or Dublin. if the all Ireland was 7 a side Kerry would piss it, I hope they win another as it's strange to see a side win so much and still underachieve. I think we'll all look back on their artistry fondly.

The thing about Donegals style of play is that they can look so in control of matches with small leads because they are so so hard to break down defensively and give away so few goal chances. Teams will always hit a lot of wides against them and that can be deflating.

Thought they were flattered by their winning margin yesterday. Even accounting for the pressure they put on forwards Tyrone hit more wides from play than you would expect. The Tyrone goalkeepers hit more wides from frees than he would normally. The first Donegal goal could not have happened if the referee did not move the ball 15 yards forward after Tyrone conceded a free. Tyrone had a great goal chance but it fell to a player who never even had a goal on his mind. Tyrone also had a clear penalty turned down.

All these turning points were before the last half an hour when the game was still close. Just a few of them going a different way and Tyrone would have and probably deserved to be 3 or 4 points ahead.

Donegal beat Tyrone by 2 points in ulster last year but it was as comprehenssive 2 point win as you would ever see when Donegal got on top in the second half.

Donegal -1 was the bet of the weekend - This weekend's nap is Offaly (+9) with Powers. Offaly are much better than they were last year and Kildare aren't as good as they looked like they were gonna be. This could well be close but Offaly +9 is a cert!

i am not surprised the sligo players came out in support of walsh.hes very likable and loyal to a fault.in a tight spot he will not let u down.he has just stayed a yr too long and imo he has done very well with them.as regards o'hara,it comes a time when its over and in time i think he will regret his comments,the sligo county board,fair enough but not walsh.also walsh has to be the next galway manager.
