Shocking decision to disqualify the winner. It is at times like this you need wildman. The small trainer and claiming jockey were never going to stand a chance against the might of Walsh/ Mullins/Wiley. The stewards know what side their bread is buttered on.
Report Sligored May 22, 2013 9:21 PM BST
just home ... not a big gambler but could have done with the 175 euro... had 10 each way at 13.5 and 10 at 4.0 for the place.

Definitely the ruby factor - atr showed a replay from the 2nd last fence and he didnt do much wrong - not enough to be put into last place.

Worst ever stewards decision (maybe the pocket speaking) - i never even considered laying the bet in the enquiry.

Seskinane's jockey broke the rules , definitely dangerous riding .  In Ireland that means getting scrubbed .  It matters not a jot that he would have got away with it in England , their  Stewards lack of action in reversing placings is often ludicrous .

No idea why Derek Fox chose to try and barge trhough against 2 of the top jockeys in Ireland , he must have known he wasn't going to get a "welcome " mat . Hopefully he will learn a lesson .

Having said all that , I have the utmost sympathy for the connections of Seskinane  , only hope is that if they backed their horse they did it off course and will collect .

Racing can be a tough game , JP is sadly testimony to that( plus others) , Twigline could have been severely injured by Derek Fox's squeeze through , particularly as it seemed to happen on the crown of a bend when horses are adjusting .

Moneywise tonights race was of zero impact on me , no bet on the race either before or in running  , did fancy Twigline , which should probably have got the lions share of the purse .

Kelly I've seen plenty of similar incidents of dangerous riding perpetrated by senior riders and the stewards only cautioned them or deemed it the accidental cop out, here was a young jockey who was fair game, its a recurring theme in virtually all stewarding decisions.
Report punchestown May 22, 2013 9:49 PM BST
No bet in the race buy a ban for the jockey would have sufficed imo, very harsh and off putting on the owners of the disqualified animal,Graham Wylie,WPM and RW need the money I suppose.

richters , i have have met both wr and rocket on a number of occasions , both are genuine sport fans and regularly go to proper sport events. Not like you , the ultimate keyboard warrior.

Am shocked at what happened tonite, no chance ruby would have been disqualified in the same situation .
Report Kelly May 22, 2013 9:58 PM BST
Agree Silvergreaser that sometimes we see some scary things , and the more experienced jockeys are more adept at fighting their corner than a young guy ( who has a lot of talent) .  Even Lester suffered in his younger career for the occasional piece of riding deemed "cheeky" by his peers .

At the time I put myself in the minds of the Twigline connections , would have been furious if "our" horse had been hurt or brought down by the incident  , particularly if they had invested their readies on Twigline .  Derek Fox unfortunately broke the rules , admitted it apparently , had to go .  Maybe he needs to zone into Tigers mindset , he would probably have got away with it !

A shocking decision b the Sligo stewards , who should hang their heads in shame ...A real big man wins every time decision if ever there was one ..I watched this race before going out and thought , what a silly young man sure to get a few days for that ,  when Sligored rang and old me it had been disqualified i was amazed ...This kind of decision is one of the reasons why the small man i.e racing syndicates are been lost to Irish racing ..They know they have no chance against the likes of MULLINS ETC....No fault of Willies btw ....A little like whats happened in greyhound racing , Little trainer been put in as cannon fodder time and time against the big trainers , The owner get sick of it and packs it in ...With decisions like tonights looks like racing is heading down the same road....Shame on them....

Ok Wonky now answer the question yoummy is asking you my good man what price should twigline have been w/o one? Wink
Report keen leader May 24, 2013 12:05 PM BST
as it happens, I went into the pp shop in Sligo town before racing, and I had a very small wager on the extra market on this race, they bet without the 2 mullins horses and it was 5/4 your pick, seskinane and elliotts.  and as it happens they paid out on both.

I did not look around the ring to see if anyone was playing chances on the race. if it was Meehan and Ray, then all you could have on was buttons, and in effect it was not a market. Meehan would lay for a maximum liability of 100, 50 if it was the son on the controls, and I was chatting with ray during the evening, and he said he was there to win a deuce, as he is retiring if he can locate a buyer for his pitches. hence if you wanted the back seskinane at 4/6 without 2, between the 2 layers you would be lucky to get a 200-300.

The Appeals Body (Division One) Patrick Reidy (in the Chair), Martin O’Donnell and Peter Reynolds met at the Turf Club, Curragh, Co. Kildare on 11th July 2013 to consider the appeals of Eugene McMahon, owner and Derek Fox, rider, of Seskinane against the decision of the Stewards at Sligo on 22nd May 2013 to disqualify Seskinane, suspend Derek Fox for 10 race days and order that he forfeit his riding fee, following the running of the All Sports Betting Tubbercurry Hurdle.

The grounds of appeal lodged by Derek Fox were that “he did not ride dangerously and did not get a fair hearing”. The grounds of appeal lodged by Eugene McMahon were that “the horse should not have been disqualified, as the rider was not guilty of dangerous riding”.

At the outset Edward F McAllister, Acting Solicitor on behalf of Derek Fox, made a number of submissions to the Appeals Body with regard to the fairness of the stewards enquiry at Sligo. In particular he alleged that the enquiry was conducted unfairly and contrary to the principles of natural justice. He raised issues with regard to the line of questioning of his client Derek Fox which resulted in the conviction of his client for dangerous riding. He asked the Appeals Body not to allow the case presenter cross-examine on the basis of the evidence contained in transcript. In response Conal Boyce, on behalf of the Turf Club, said that as the hearing was a “de novo” hearing, he did not have any difficulty with Mr McAllister’s proposal.

Having considered the submissions, the Appeals Body ruled that the hearing should proceed without any reference to the transcript.

Evidence was heard from Paul Townend – rider Twigline (FR), Ruby Walsh – rider On His Own and Derek Fox. Film of the race was also reviewed.

In his evidence Paul Townend said that he was about a half length behind On His Own when the incident occurred. He said it was a gap of between 14 and 18 inches between Twigline (FR) and On His Own which was insufficient for Seskinane to go through. He had Seskinane held in the pocket and Seskinane had to canon into his horse to get out. He said that he was just trying to keep his horse standing after receiving what he described as “an unmerciful thump” which knocked the stuffing of her. He said that Twigline (FR) was hit three quarter away back by Seskinane at the point of impact and that it wasn’t a shoulder to shoulder charge. He concluded by reiterating that there wasn’t a clear gap for Seskinane to go through and that he felt he would have won but for the interference.
In his evidence Ruby Walsh confirmed the evidence given by Paul Townend that there wasn’t enough room for a horse to get through between On His Own and Twigline (FR) and just because there was room for Seskinane’s head to go into the gap didn’t mean that the rest of his body would get through.

In his evidence Derek Fox said that Seskinane travelled well throughout the race and that he angled out from behind just before the turn into the straight to go between On His Own and Twigline (FR). He said there was a sufficient gap and that he was almost through it when Twigline (FR) came in on top of Seskinane. He said he was upsides Twigline (FR) at the point of impact and that the collision was exaggerated as it took place on the bend. He said he did not intend to make contact with Twigline (FR) during the manoeuvre and that he did not purposely interfere with Twigline (FR) nor did he ride in such a way to endanger the safety of another horse or rider.

Having considered the evidence the Appeals Body was satisfied that what occurred fell within the definition of dangerous riding under Rule 214 with the result that Derek Fox was found in breach of this rule. As a consequence the disqualification of Seskinane was confirmed and the result of the race remains as amended by the Stewards at Sligo on 22nd May 2013 and reads as follows:
First: On His Own
Second: Twigline (FR)
Third: Time To Work
Fourth: Dooney Rock
The Appeals Body considered a submission on penalty by Edward McAllister on behalf of Derek Fox in relation to the finding of dangerous riding. Having considered the submission the Appeals Body ordered that the original penalty of 10 race days will stand and that Derek Fox forfeit his riding fee. In addition the Appeals Body ordered that he forfeit his appeal deposit and contribute €250 towards Turf Club costs. The suspension dates are 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd July.

The case was presented by Conal Boyce, Solicitor, Naas, Co. Kildare. Eugene McMahon and Derek Fox were both represented by Edward F. McAllister, Solicitor, Lisburn, Co. Antrim.
