Charlie is a top trainer, he won that horse himself in Lingfield not so long ago. He just hasn't had the horses of late, but had a taking bumper winner in Cork last week, could be quite special.

Snap he won a claimer with the horse. He is right up there with Rothwell as one of the worst in the country. Train the bolli* out of one first time out and thats about it.

Elison was a nothing trainer for years barely able to win a seller at Wolverhampton, his transformation in recent years has been nothing short of miraculous, I wonder why that is?

I'm sure you have kav in recent seasons, but this guy epitomized everything you needed in a journeyman trainer plying his trade at Wolverhampton on a Saturday night trying his best to win bad races with bad horses and even then that didnt come easy, his and his horses transformations over the last 3 or 4 seasons has me scratching my head?, are his horses drinking from a magic well?.

prob found his niche in my opinion.getting former promising horses from bad trainers and restoring them to their former glory.dont think anything sinister in it.

I think he is a very underestimated trainer. Does well with what he has but just doesn't have the same fire power as some of the bigger yards. Ran a very promising newcomer in Gowran during the week and won a bumper with a very decent looking type in Cork a few weeks ago. Even Discovery Bay was well punted at Lingfield when Swan brought him over for his first run on the polytrack in the UK, and they duly collected.

A winner at Doncaster today for Ellison and a winner for Rothwell at Tramore. Two trainers really at the top of their game right now. Like Charlie Swan, if only they got a slightly better class of horse in their yards they would really be forces to reckoned with at the highest level.

Charlie Swan Last 6 years 145 winners from 1700+ runners = 8% s/r
As for getting some fire power,Swan has had it and couldn't deliver, lost multiple owners. In 07 he had in excess of 400 total runs, last year 180 Ah but shur you are probably skitting Snap.

in 2007/2008 season he had 413 total runs-shocking trainer.
I wouldn't be hailing winning a 2k claimer against 55 rated horses at Lingfield and losing a decent hurdler to Ellison for a pittance as a successful move.Sold at fishers cross as well for 38k.
Charlie was presented with a golden opportunity by the likes of JP and has under achieved(to put it kindly)

If he had just got a break with one of JP's decent horses like At Fishers Cross it would have really boosted his profile and brought him up to the next level where he belongs

Although I appreciate your referral to me as a shrewdie, I am not skitting here. The man is a class act imo, otherwise the likes of JP, Gigginstown and Mr Hyde wouldn't be supporting him

A neighbour of mine but has no real interest in training.
J P McManus is loyal to his old jockeys and he hasn't forgotten Istabraq Gigginstown have horses everywhere The fact Charlie is married to one of Timmy Hydes daughters might be a reason he has his horses
He should hand over to Denis Hogan

Swan had some great seasons, had some good horse not superstars, but the likes of Offshore Account, Emmpat, Jalmira, One Cool Cookie, What a Native among others won plenty of decent prises, the reason for Charlies steady decline might be that McManus and O'Leary have started to broaden their wings and spread their progeny among many trainers, one more good horse and Charlie will be everyones darling again?.
I still think the astonishing almost meteorological rise from all weather nobody to top trainer by Ellison is extremely suspect?.

Hardly a meteorological rise??Ellison isn't a top trainer, his total prize money last year was 358k, does well at a low level.
Very shrewd stable, the gambling has as much to do with his step son as himself.

Fair dues to him for being able to increase the size of his stable throughout the recession,SG-Don't be so cynical-some people are just good at what they do but as we know you think all trainers are off a similar standard-Feed them, get them fit and watch the dollars roll in!!

Prize money was €228000 in 2005 and rose astonishingly to €358000 by 2012,what does it matter if the 2k claimers/4k handicaps are on the all weather or turf??

For a trainer who was never talked about for years as one who improves other peoples cast offs, now he's able turn the ugliest ducklings into imperious Swans?, how come you couldnt do that before Brian considering you've been training for 24 years or so?. Suddenly found that magic formula after all these years?.

Exactly Gant, if Rothwell or Swan were based in the UK they would be winning those low grade races left right and centre, just look at what the result was when Swan brought a stable lesser light to Lingfield for a claimer, wins pulling a freight train!

Rothwell is a shocking trainer. He would still be a shocking trainer if he trained in the UK. His horses have no consistency and the key is he doesnt have a clue when they will run well. That says it all

19 wins and 41 placed horses in the last 12 months. He does extremely well with what he has just doesnt have the firepower in the yard to bring him to the next level
