What are peoples opinions of him as a trainer?
Drumlee the latest in the line of running with his legs tied together since joining Charlie.

Charlie is a top trainer, he won that horse himself in Lingfield not so long ago. He just hasn't had the horses of late, but had a taking bumper winner in Cork last week, could be quite special.

Snap he won a claimer with the horse.  He is right up there with Rothwell as one of the worst in the country.  Train the bolli* out of one first time out and thats about it.

Elison was a nothing trainer for years barely able to win a seller at Wolverhampton, his transformation in recent years has been nothing short of miraculous, I wonder why that is?

where are you going now silver?what angle have you?!?..i got lots of winners out of that yard.seldom leaves it behind.
Report silvergreaser April 12, 2013 6:43 PM BST
I'm sure you have kav in recent seasons, but this guy epitomized everything you needed in a journeyman trainer plying his trade at Wolverhampton on a Saturday night trying his best to win bad races with bad horses and even then that didnt come easy, his and his horses transformations over the last 3 or 4 seasons has me scratching my head?, are his horses drinking from a magic well?.

Report snap crackle and pop April 12, 2013 10:13 PM BST
I think he is a very underestimated trainer. Does well with what he has but just doesn't have the same fire power as some of the bigger yards. Ran a very promising newcomer in Gowran during the week and won a bumper with a very decent looking type in Cork a few weeks ago. Even Discovery Bay was well punted at Lingfield when Swan brought him over for his first run on the polytrack in the UK, and they duly collected.
Report snap crackle and pop April 13, 2013 5:38 PM BST
A winner at Doncaster today for Ellison and a winner for Rothwell at Tramore. Two trainers really at the top of their game right now. Like Charlie Swan, if only they got a slightly better class of horse in their yards they would really be forces to reckoned with at the highest level.

Charlie Swan  Last 6 years 145 winners from 1700+ runners = 8% s/r

As for getting some fire power,Swan has had it and couldn't deliver, lost multiple owners.
In 07 he had in excess of 400 total runs, last year 180
Ah but shur you are probably skitting Snap.
Report snap crackle and pop April 13, 2013 6:39 PM BST
What firepower are you referring to that Swan had dj? I think he does extremely well with the limited number that he has
Report dj876 April 13, 2013 6:52 PM BST
in 2007/2008 season he had 413 total runs-shocking trainer.

I wouldn't be hailing winning a 2k claimer against 55 rated horses at Lingfield and losing a decent hurdler to Ellison for a pittance as a successful move.Sold at fishers cross as well for 38k.

Charlie was presented with a golden opportunity by the likes of JP and has under achieved(to put it kindly)

Report snap crackle and pop April 13, 2013 10:13 PM BST

The fact Charlie is married to one of Timmy Hydes daughters might be a reason he has his horses

He should hand over to Denis Hogan
Report silvergreaser April 14, 2013 11:28 AM BST
Swan had some great seasons, had some good horse not superstars, but the likes of Offshore Account, Emmpat, Jalmira, One Cool Cookie, What a Native among others won plenty of decent prises, the reason for Charlies steady decline might be that McManus and O'Leary have started to broaden their wings and spread their progeny among many trainers, one more good horse and Charlie will be everyones darling again?.

I still think the astonishing almost meteorological rise from all weather nobody to top trainer by Ellison is extremely suspect?.
