I've been of that opinion about McGeeney for last few seasons. There is a big difference between a good coach and a good manager. McGeeney can no doubt get players fit and peak for games but he cannot read a game. It's odd he's lasted this long in the job anyway but he seems to be loved in Kildare for some reason. Declan Ryan was similar when he was managing Tipp hurlers. That team should have had another All-Ireland in them but he almost lost a semi-final to Dublin because he couldn't figure out how to counteract Dublin's system during the course of 70mins. Only a flukey early goal got them through that day. The recent fad of younger managers who are basically fitness coaches can't last as clever managers will get the better of them. Jim McGuinness is the exception to this-he has learned from his mistakes and implemented them to great effect. It will be interesting to see if James Horan can do the same this year.

irishbro couldn't agree more with your post, I've been saying the same thing for a while now, I find its the younger generation of Kildare supporters the ones in their mid to late 20's who worship McGeeney and no matter how much it stares them in the face he can still do nothing wrong. Its almost homoerotic with them.
But I'm not on my own on this, many of us older Kildare supporters are not as enamoured with him and can see him for what he is, a good motivator but tactically redundant.

Surely people don't listen to or read what a little braindead sh1t like brolly has to say. The only GAA g1mp ever to blow kisses at a crowd and can't see beyond the end of his nose when it come to non ulster counties
I have more time for a river rat, mind you they look alike

Joe Brolly has been a ball hopper for a long time . He shared a room / dorm or whatever with my wifes nephew in boarding school . Was then .
Joe and Geezer must have been at university around the same time , both Queensmen I think . Certainly not unknown to each other .
I only see Brolly occasionally on TV , dont have RTE other than on Sky and if there is something more lucrative on another channel I am not tuned in .
Have seen Geezer training and training others in the past , in Cherryvale where Queens played in my day , and Joe lives a six iron away from there . His training looked good , and a bit different to the run of the mill stuff we experienced in our days , guess that is why he is considered a very good coach / trainer . Plus at uni he was a deep thinker about the game , and dedicated beyond normality ( family reportage , accurate ) .
But his record with Kildare is not stellar , dont pay enough attention to Kildare / Kildare players myself to analyse them , but they have been playing much the same most matches I have seen , largely to little avail in ultimate success terms . So Joes view might have some basis in fact .
You might not agree with Joe Brollys assessment or attitude , but its hard to knock a human being who volunteered a kidney to someone outside kith and kin . Expressed my admiration for his action last time I was talking to him , but contrary to public persona perception ( anticipated) he was humble about it . Fair play to him . Dont know many with the courage to do that .
Kildare have a proud and substantial place in GAA history , but for the money and effort they have put in in the last 20 years or so they need some "silverware " to keep stoking the fires of hope . Not sure Geezer ( or maybe anybody ) can deliver , the best teams nearly always have some stand out ( scoring ) performers , tactics only work to a certain level , at the end of the day you need to score more than the opposition , but only the players can score .

A good qualified post Kelly and open minded. The problem I have is Joe shouldn't have had a go at a Geezer. McGeeney was the most professional player of his era, at the time I didn't like him much because he'd be very hard on players especially younger ones who didn't have his mentality and attitude. Everyone takes the easy way out by blaming managers, a prime example is Meath, the locals blamed Banty for all the problems when there isn't enough top quality players in the county. Kildare have a good crop of players, at present its hard to say if they are good enough to win an All Ireland, but if they are McGeeney certainly won't cause them not to.
Away from football fair play to Joe for that marvelous gift he gave to someone, as you stated not only does it take kindness it also takes tremendous courage.
I just wish he'd think before he speaks, because deep down he knows there are few more dedicated GAA men than Ciaran McGeeney. I'm jealous Geezer is not in Meath rather than Kildare.

I agree, that soccer style crap of blaming the manager when the players are simply not good enough crept into Meath. There is one place in Meath that Banty aint welcome at the moment. Having met McGeeney a few times, nice fella but very intense. Brolly is a leg puller.

The cult of the "manager" in relation to gaelic games has spread from the soccer mania , where managers come and go and fall like ninepins .
In relation to the current crop of managers , I think most of them are pretty good at conditioning etc . But you cant get blood from a stone , I dont think the general standard of players at present is the highest , partly due to the style of play ( possession / hand passing / blanket defences ) . In the past a lot of managers had brilliant players who could play different roles , in different positions , in different scenarios and the managers blest with those players could reposition them to good effect . Harder now to do that .
Geezer was always intense , Gant , and civil . Unfortunately finishing top quartile is not considered adequate in some counties , ultimate success can only belong to one county . Joe is a ball hopper , but insightful too . Sometimes a wee bit too "Ulster" , but we have a slight siege mentality up here ( sometimes ? ) .

That siege mentality makes the northern people all that bit more special. They are fierce competitive be it horse racing, greyhounds, gaelic games etc.. Years of being treated as second class citizens drives people on.

Only some of us Gant . The ones with their foot on our necks for years still find it hard to give up the bully boy mentality . Thats "flagged up" somewhere else on this forum .

given that jason ryan is now in the backroom team it surely says a something about geezer as jasons skills are mainly man -managing , though his big failing with my own native county was his inability to think on his feet , he was able to come up with a plan to stiffle dublin somewhat over the last few years but couldnt alter that game plan in the heat of battle, geezer is the same imo and though it kills me to say it brolly may be right!

Would J McGuinness have won 2012 All Ireland with Kildare or P Gilroy have won 2011 All Ireland with Kildare????
It is my view they wouldn't have.
Could C McGeeney have won an All Ireland in 2012 with Donegal, I doubt it. Only the 30 players inside the dressing room up there know whats going on. but I do believe he'd have won one with Dublin in 2011.
