Hard to believe that our 4 lads finish up pitted against each other in the first round . So its Rory vs Shane ( good buddies ) and Graeme vs Padraig .
Not as simple as it might seem for Rory , he has been off for a month , although Shane has not been playing well , so you would think Rory should prevail , but not a 1/3 shot .
Gmac vs Padraig is a real toss of the coin , Padraig has been playing better in the last month or so , Gmac has only played one tournament this year so far , no form . Normally I would favour Gmac on basis of being a good competitor in matchplay , but sitting it out . PP have a 12 hole proviso in their individual bets on the first round matches , if your selection is leading at 12 holes and loses subsequently you get your stake back ( up to £100) . This match might just go like that , someone leading at 12 and losing .
Only consolation re match-ups is that we have at least 2 players going through to 2nd round .
And the match play format makes good viewing if the coverage is any good . Starts Wednesday .
And a subsidiary quiz question : one of the 4 players above won the North of Ireland at Portrush ( thought it was more than one myself till I looked it up ) . Which 3 didn't ?

Kelly, I don't know if you saw the entire draw but all 4 Irish boys are in the top half of the Bobby Jones quarter/bracket which means there can only be a max of 1 Irish player in the Qtr-finals

Lowry is correct , deplasterer , I knew that because he beat a friend of ours in the final . Surprised that none of those 3 Major winners won it although I think 2 of them were beaten finalists . Rory does not appear on the roster , despite the fact that he will forever hold the course record of 61 ( unless he beats it himself ) .

this thread title reminds of a lot of things im not sure i like about ireland and irish people, like the irish press always trying to find an irish 'link' to big news stories and claiming some bloody paddywhackery connection to the news, ffs cant they just accept its a corrupt small country where not an awful lot of big global issues happen, even in sport they grasp desperatly at any kind of link to top stories,it seems like the kind of small insular outlook which has made this country what it is.

All nationalities like to see their own doing well , padlock . If they are doing it on the world stage , so much the better .
I would have much preferred that the 4 lads had been drawn against non Irish opponents , think they would too . No problem if they meet later on in the course of an event such as this .
Outside of Ryder Cup , Presidents Cup , Seve Trophy and Accenture there is little match play in professional golf , and those events have limited participants . The reference to North of Ireland championship arose in my mind because it is the single biggest sole venue event in the world for amateurs ( I am reliably informed ) , and it is hard to win , so seen on fact that 3 of our recent Major stars failed to win it ( surprised me that ) despite many attempts relatively speaking . Darren did win it for the record just to dot the i's and cross the t's , as did Michael Hoey , and Paul McGinley had also a good record . So its not a bad yardstick for competitiveness .
