Gambling books - Enemy number one

I thought he was on an ego trip.  At the end I wondered if it was a true story or just a story.  Did you learn anything you could apply to your betting?  I didn't.

Not so far but for me i did not expect to either if i'm being honest Kin.

have to say i found it a boring read.
more like a diary of his bets.

also found it to be a bit too of a "how great am i read" and was left wondering how much artistic license was apllied.

Does anybody have books about gambling they would recommend?

Do you mean books with gambling tips? Or just general books about a gambling story? The Fix by Declan Hill is meant to be a good book. I could stand corrected here but i would doubt there is any book out there that will tell you how to win at gambling.

The best book i ever read was the the Barry Brogan story,,i got the book in the local liberty many moons ago,dont know if they ever made a film of the book,,it made Barnie Curly look like the fairy godmother.

Always back winners by stewart simpson hooked me many years ago,would be a bit dated now,was a good read at the time.

Veitch is on an ego trip with that book,I could tell you a few stories about him.

The VDW series had a lot of insight into how to read form.Temperament and odds how right he was.

As I tell any youngster into gambling €14 profit per day equates to 50K after 10 years,I mentioned it to a few seasoned punters,but they were too ingrained with the quick fix.

I have read The Fix but it is a book about match fixing written by someone who claims to have never placed a bet.  So odds etc are very very rarely mentioned.  The first half of the book is an eye opener but the end is a bit of an anti climax.

Ready the Veitch book - left me with one major question:

How big is his phone bill?

I disliked Enemy No 1. The story about having to go into hiding seemed overdone. I suppose that the only thing I learnt was that you have to have a professional mindset. Against the odds by david lee priest is probably the best book ive read about betting. The Art of legging will arrive in a few days so hopefully that will help with me adjusting my thinking to actually making a book. If anyone has some good reads about the theory of betting rather than any get rich quick schemes i would be greatful. Also any reads that concern the actual business of bookmaking. cheers

This was for me the best book, ok not exactly gambling but an excellent read

Bringing down the house by Ben Mezrich - semi fictional account of a bunch of students who took vegas for million by card counting. Good read.

Benjamin Graham's Intelligent investor first published in 1934.

Graham Bradley's Wayward lad is a decent read featuring the Milkman.

Bore Alert-Ruby's autobiography,Just a list of his winners.

I have the Veitch book, and i wasn't impressed by it. Very little in the way of form selection process revealed.

I still have Vetch's book but not read it yet

I read it Rocket and to be honest theres not a lot worth reading in it ....Massive ego trip for the lad , Having said that , he certainly how to get a bet on...

I prefer non-fiction.

for a man who claims to read all these gambling books i am shocked that you seem to get confused after reading 2 lines of any posts on here......it must take ye the guts of a year to get to the end of the first chapter.......or is it the audio versions of these ye get......

Good book, section on gangster was irrelevant. Wonder what he is up to now, the silence is ominous. Probably not profitable.

Veitch's book was essentially an exercise in telling everyone how great he is. Ego trip in the extreme. He goes as far as to quote the smart arsey replies he has given to bookies over years that tried to limit him. It was cringeworthy stuff. No doubt he's a good judge, but while he doesn't say it straight, reading between the lines, it seems that he acts as a commission agent for lots of high-profile connections and replicates "hot" business with his own cash. There is nothing especially admirable about that and personally, I'm still waiting to read a betting book that actually gives a proper insight into the methodologies of someone that makes it pay off their own back. Also, will we ever get a book that the figures quoted can be verified independently, as some of the numbers in these books often seem too good to be true.

Redbait , asking them to Fully disclose their methods would be asking a lot , they'd lose their edge ...Mordin's book .Winning without thinking is full of good systems , the problem been ,they're all out of date.....

reading books about gambling paticularly horse racing is never gonna make you money.systems etc wont work because in the end its the trainers and owners who decide if a particular horse who as he form to win a particular race trys or not.they my want to drop it a few lbs..might be waiting for a bigger pot down the line..a better price..lots of reasons

What you say is largely rubbish, IMO, kavvie. Owners and trainers are in the game to win and while there will be some massaging of marks, the vast majority of horses are doing their best the vast majority of the time. The usual suspects will laugh at that statement, but anyone that watches racing (especially Irish flat racing) closely will hold the same view. IMO, and no offence intended, all the finger pointing at fixing trainers/owners is just a convenient excuse for those that struggle to make it pay.

I've read it.The history of Bookmaking thats in it is interesting,some of the Maths equations and explanations are quite involved,but it gives an interesting insight into how Bookmakers worked . ( I guess it's all done on computers nowadays ) ...

As for Enemy No 1 , I agree with some of the other chaps above,there is no doubt Veitch made a few bob,but the book was an exercise in airing his ego.


There was a book written by a guy called Dave Farrar, The Perfect Punter which tells the story of how he went on 'tilt' with his gambling and then tried to recoup his losses by adopting a more studious approach.That's a decent read.

STevieb , i read the art of legging in the 90s ..I found the maths impossible to follow , but some very interesting points were illustrated ...I spoke to them in London , possibly the author , who seemed like a real gent and was as helpful as could be...

Best book for gambling is a Post Office Savings book.

It's easy to be a fancy dan punter when you have Daddy to bail you out or if your an Irish builder just don't pay up.........oh yea and write a book about the good days.

i have veitches book and nevisons book, i'd have to try find them but if anybody wants them they can have them - which probably tells you my opinion of them :-)
