A Garda detective has been shot dead tonight in Ireland during a botched hold-up.

The Garda officer in his 40s was among colleagues who were escorting a cash delivery to a credit union in Dundalk, Co Louth.

Several shots were fired during the incident at the Lordship Credit Union, on the Cooley Road in the town at around 9.30pm.

It is believed the force is now hunting four men in a grey Volkswagen Passat which fled the scene. The officer, who was based at Dundalk Garda station, was fatally injured in the shooting

Dundalk Democrat

It has been confirmed that the Garda shot in a botched raid earlier this evening has died. The raid took place at approximately 9.30pm at the Lordship Credit Union. The Garda that was killed was believed to have been escorting a security van to the credit union.
The Dundalk Democrat understand that four armed men were waiting outside to rob the credit union and moved to hold up staff at gunpoint as they were leaving work.
One of the two detectives approached the raiders and was shot dead.
His colleague was not injured.
The raiders fled the scene in what is believed to have been a dark-coloured car.
Gardaí are still trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them at Dundalk Garda Station on 042 938840 or via the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
The area has been sealed off, the PSNI have been informed and gardaí are now trying to establish if subversives, dissidents, or members of a criminal gang are involved.
The Garda Commissioner has offered his condolences to the detective's family on their loss and is due to travel to Dundalk.

sadly a product of the liberal left, you go to prison you should be treated like a human being unlike your victim, and then when you have judges likes Carney?

These mere mortals have turned the world into a political correct asylum, jesus I can't even take a puff out of a cigarette anymore without somebody looking at me as if I had just committed mass murder?

its very sad in ireland that garda are treated with the same distain that clerks and ordinary workers are.these people are at risk every time they go to work.alan shatter has a lot to answer for.he seems not to realise the fears and concerns of ordinary people.crime out of control and garda stations closing  all over the country..

Shattered is too busy maintaining his vast property portfolio and making speeches condemning Ireland's neutrality during WW2 to care about Gardai...

I recall people being afraid in their own houses and scared to walk the streets going back 20 years ago and Det Jerry McCabe being murdered all at a time when the country had garda stations all over the place .
The number of stations has remained the same since Independence despite all the social and technological changes.
It's illogical to claim that an overdue rationalisation of garda resources in straitened times has somehow prompted any particular crimes.
But illogic never stops people who want to jumble everything together to create emotional reactions.

The most threatening atmosphere I remember in Ireland was the time of the hunger strikes, thugs roaming the streets and forcing banks and shops to close. It was the nearest I have seen to the break down of democracy.

Capital punishment has been abolished in the Republic of Ireland. The last execution was in 1954, of Michael Manning for the rape and murder of Catherine Cooper, a nurse. From then until 1990 while capital punishment remained on the statute book, a practice arose whereby every sentence of death was commuted by the Irish president. The death penalty was abolished in law in 1990, and has been specifically prohibited by the Constitution of Ireland since 2002. The constitution provides that the penalty cannot be reintroduced even in war or a state of emergency. Capital punishment is also forbidden by several human rights treaties to which the state is a party......  R.I.P

Correct mrcombustible -but fortunately the Irish people en masse have always stood against the fascist thuggery and bloodlust of the IRA and the ragbag of so-called republican gangsters who still litter the landscape today.

( Incidentally -the murder of Jerry McCabe and the attempted murder of Ben O'Sullivan took place in Adare main street across the road from a Garda Station ...)
