Goes to show you the respect they have for the betting public, see link above. Walsh says the punters money doesn't go back into racing, where does he think the 3% levy the bookmakers are absorbing from the punter is going?, to help the poor in Africa?, it becomes part of the annual goverment handout for HRI of course, and who props up the Tote?, I'm sure it's the punter wouldn't you think?, and I wonder where the racecourse's would be if the public stopped turning up in the morning, no tv money could save them?, the sheer arrogance of the guy!.
I went to a few of these in the past, and they can be good fun sometimes, but don't think for one second they're there for the love of the betting public, you'd be forgotten about the second they put the microphone down for the last time, but throw them a tri colour at Cheltenham and they'll milk it for all its worth, as if they are the hero instead of the horse underneath them that they just steered home. 60,000 pack the stands on Gold Cup day and the vast majority of them will be punters. |

That interview with Ruby was a disgrace. He got away with absolute murder. If Big Mac had any sort of clue, he could have absolutely buried Ruby for his ignorant comments. Money derived from betting tax makes up just over half of the Horse and Greyhound Fund which finances the sport and much of the prize money which Ruby is very happy to take his 8% of. Not to mention the fact that the industry is being propped up to an extent by SIS money which is only there because of the value of punters to the bookmakers. True, jockeys will always have more direct loyalty to owners/trainers, but they should have respect for punters and the important role they play in the industry.
By:
Amazing a post from Redbait without his usual a new low for the forum, nothing ignorant in what Ruby Walsh said as the punter no longer pays, they scrapped betting tax some while back.
By:
Never scrapped wildman there has been a 3% levy for good few years now, the bookmakers decided to absorb it themselves rather than pass it onto the punter, obviously their profit margins allowed them to do so.
I'm not sure how much the 3% levy generates every year, but I'd say its pretty substantial?, and when the goverment is dishing out their annual gift to HRI all that levy is included. |
By:
Actually wildman I think there is a 1% levy on turnover and another 2% on all winning bets, I'm open to correction, and it looks like there will be a levy introduced for all offshore and online bets, will the bookmakers absorb this too or will they be left with no choice but to pass it on to the punter?.
By:
The tax arrangements between bookmaker and the government is their business but the fact remains that the betting tax on punters has been scrapped. The other fact that the industry is given a large amount of taxpayers money could be twisted into showing that it is non punters who pay for it,drinkers smokers etcetera.
By:
Wildman,
Your senility is well established, but I have absolutely no idea what you're on about with this constant "a new low for the forum" reference you make with regard to me, as I never said such a thing. As well as that, you are just as ignorant as Walsh if you think the betting tax was scrapped. It's 3% and it generated over €25m for the racing industry last year. Educate yourself before commenting. I won't be replying to you again on this thread, as life is too short to engage in petty squabbles with the likes of you. |
By:
Redbait that reply isint worthy of you.
Calling people senile and ignorant is not debating but you are looking at it from the industry point of view in that you get 3 per cent of bookmakers turnover I look at it from the punters point and know that I pay no tax on my bets, that is indisputable. |
By:
The punter still pays indirectly wildman, bookmakers need plenty of customers to generate turnover and the more losing punters they have the less they have to absorb to pay the goverment on winning bets, but I'm sure the bookies have squeezed their margins a little to offset this?.
Do you remember the days of 20% betting tax?, it gradually decreased over the years, but where did all that money go wildman, to prop up the then struggling racing industry I presume?. |
By:
It didn't actually that went straight into the governments coffers.
When you go down the road of indirectly paying that applies to all forms of tax whether its vat or corporation tax,you are then into which type of punter is doing the losing,is it the ones betting on football or the ones betting on numbers go down that road and racing would lose its funding. I will miss Redbaits catchphrase of " a new low for the forum " but for him to deny saying it is incredible as he has used on numerous occasions generally in a superior way. |
By:
Just to clarify....Bets places in betting offices attract a duty of 1% on the stake payable by the bookmaker.Bets placed online, by telephone or on an exchange attract no duty but it is proposed to change this.
For what its worth I agree with earlier sentiments regarding Ruby Walsh and his near contempt for punters. |
By:
Its simple lads. If there were no punters there would be no racing. There would be no racing on tv no sponsors - there would be zilch. I believe Ruby is the best NH jockey probably of all time and I have defended him time after time on these forums but his statement to put it mildly was stupid
By:
There is tiny prize money in point to points plus wealthy horse owners in the past had private wagers.
The word punter is used in its broad sense but does that include thr FOBT players the lads that bet on the virtual racing and the Roulette punters. |
By:
Tolmi is right, it's 1% on turnover. It generated just over €25m in 2011 which was just over half the entire Horse and Greyhound Fund. For Ruby to suggest that punter's money doesn't go back to HRI is 100% incorrect. Over 50% of the money he earns from prize money can be traced back to punter's stakes.
By:
I think Arklearkle's post at 11.25 sums up my views precisely.
There are no FOBT's legal here wildman (thankfully) but in the UK they do not attract levy.A bet on virtual racing here has duty payable on it. |

Apologies in advance for stupid question but where exactly is Westmanstown?
By:
a golf course somewhere near Lucan
By:
Oufie it is west of Castleknock. Coming out from Dublin turn left at Myos. Turn right on to Carpenstown rd then along Porterstown rd. At a guess at least 3 km from Myos. You need to look it up on a map. Was at last years - a big crowd and very well run but no winners. It is a golf club - an incredible set-up and a relic from tiger days. Owned by our good friends with the big shoes.
By:
back of lucan village near the strawberry beds , also near fort lucan ....at the roundabout its tiny btw , in lucan village , beside the bank take a left , cross over the bridge , head straight as if heading for clonee , as you approach another bridge take a right just before the bridge , after a couple of hundred yards take a left ..westmanstown is then on your left hand side roughly 200yds its the garda golf club...hth....
