Irish golfing enthusiasts will join with me in offering congrats to Dazza on his signal award for services to sport. Presumably an equivalent Irish award would be something like a CCH or Cú Chulainn. Given that illustrious hero's canine connections a golden dog collar might be an appropriate symbol. Only a matter of time before the emergence of Rory McIlroy CBE and then Sir Rory. Semper excelsior .
MBE the starter , then OBE , then CBE . Member , Order , Commander I think , the BE you can figure out yourself .
Looked well Darren getting his award . The ceremony is very well organised and unpressured , surprisingly , and those running it are real pros .

I feel these awards for sports stars are pretty hollow, they're already handsomely rewarded for their services to what is only a leisure activity, so Clarke had a talent for golf, his achievements done nothing to further mankind.
Is there an OBE for outstanding achievements in sheet metal working?.

Probably still have the shades on when recieving it from her very lowness pa lapsy, and then mammy will ring his mobile.
Its not Aidan who should be getting it, it's his horses, well it is they afterall who have the talent to run fast, well some of them anyway.

Lets be honest max, Saville would've been far more deserving than Clarke ever would at the time of his award, the abuse accusations only surfaced after his death. Why would you think a person was drinking for posting an opinion?, well I somehow doubt I'd have been awake at 7.45 to watch the morning line if I had been.

silvergreaser - I realise that like many on here you wion't be much interested in the minutiae of the British Honours List. It is the case ,however, that honours are conferred on many hundreds of ordinary people who have performed some outstanding service in their local community over a stretch of time -it could be for bellringing , social work or any activity that has some beneficial impact on the general populace. People can be eligible for awards whether they are local , national or international figures. While it is true that honours can be bought at the top of the scale and there have been controversies -there's no system that's not subject to abuse. It doesn't stop the recipients from appreciating the recognition that the honour entails. I myself do not like awards and would not accept one in a fit -but I appreciate that the world swings that way and if others enjoy the gig -that's fine. BTW -congratulations on working in your de rigueur swipe at Aidan O'Brien. I must start a thread some day on seal culling in the Arctic and see if you could somehow get in a negative reference to Ballydoyle.

Vubiant you might notice I was prompted by the previous post by pa lapsy.
Is there a cushier sport than playing professional golf?, if you compare it say to professional football/soccer, the golfer has to answer to nobody, he hires a caddy to carry his bag and advise him on club selection etc, if they're not happy with him/her they just fire the caddy at a whim, the soccer player has to answer to their manager, often getting the hair dryer treatment into the bargain.
The golfer doesn't have to train, he can go for a jog if he likes, or go for a gym session if he fancies it, or not bother his behind ever doing any training, if a soccer player misses a training session its hell to pay.
A golfer can pick and choose what tournaments he plays in (often in very exotic locations) if a soccer player misses a fixture there's hell to pay.
There is huge pressure on soccer players to perform or they might find themselves on the bench for a prolonged period, if a golfer fails to perform he can just shrug his shoulders and move onto the next lucrative tournament.
The only thing they have in common is most of them are extremely well paid, yep of coure Darren is very deserving of his OBE for strolling around a golf course pursuing his hobby.

Darren fully deserves his award , he kept the flag ( whichever) flying with Padraig and Paul for about 15 years on the golf courses of the world before the recent players came along , and he always played well and won more than his fair share .
That he was popular wherever he went also stands to him , good ambassador for the country , and his attitude to his late wifes illness and death cemented him with the public , so seen on the K-Club Ryder Cup emotional scenes etc which will live forever with a lot of us .
That he likes his food and drink and a bit of craic also fits him into the national consciousness , north and south , no one could begrudge him some recognition , not that a Major winner needs the extra .
I spoke with him last year one day up I was up playing in Portrush , not long after his Open triumph , like most of his fellow players he is normally approachable provided there is no element of "interfering with business " . Never met him before , although one of my sons did play occasionally with him about 20 years ago when they were looking for company up at the Port in the off season .
His interview last night was spot on , and last nights LL show was better than average , not just because of Darren .
