Wonder who comes in for the ride on Camelot (assuming he runs) on Sunday . No surprises to see Joseph unable to do the 8 stone 11lb. He struggled to do 9st 3lbs at Dundalk last week.

Murtagh will probably get passed over I would say. I mean even if the horse is drawn on the wide outside he'd still offer up his usual tactical genius and get him boxed in with nowhere to go a furlong out.

Steveirll, The PMU as far as I know is amalgamated with the English and Irish totes, so I wouldn't guarantee you'd get anything near 7/1 on Camelot, because if a horse is showing up on the the tote at ridiculous odds there is usually a flood of money before the off which shortens it up considerably, back in the 80's and 90's taking the PMU on a foreign runner on the French or American racing would often give you huge dividends.

2/1 seemed really low for Camelot today, all things considered.
I don't understand O'Brien's approach though and I feel he has backed himself into a corner.
He said post-race that he thinks that 10f is the horse's best distance but I note he hasn't ever run over that trip !
He also said that he's better on good ground. He may well be -but from  what I've seen he doesn't possess the acceleration one would expect of a high-class Gr1 good ground animal.
I don't understand why he ran two pacemakers today if his main contender was a 10f horse.
The only saving grace may be if the horse comes back rested and gives it a go under his optimal conditions next year.
In retrospect he probably suffered from the slog over 12f of Curragh mud where he rolled around at the 2f mark when put under pressure.-and going for the Triple Crown, while brave, probably did the horse no favours either.
Camelot is beginning to look like an enigma and/or his campaign has been handled maladroitly.
Report silvergreaser October 7, 2012 8:36 PM BST
I think vubiant has summed it up pretty well pa lapsy, its becoming tiresome now, he keeps tripping over himself trying to justify the hype, when St Nic was beaten by his stabemate that wonder horse Windsor Palace, he said it was the 10f trip that caught him out (we all know the horse was barely even fit), and when he was beaten in the King George Aidan says we think he's a better horse at 10f's, of course Frankel left him floundering, the guy is like one of those wind up toys, say the same thing over and over again, and when that doesn't quite work out change the record and say the same thing over and over again, but you're so confused by now Aidan you keep tripping yourself up and not one of the media are ballsy enough to question your contradictions!

I have to say I like Aidan but I can't help thinking what % of the decisions does he actually make.

judging by his usual schpiel ('best ever' etc over numerous years now) and demeanour he appears to be under an immense amount of pressure. I mean no doubt the ballydoyle job comes with a lot of pressure but lately it really seems to be affecting him and I feel sorry for him. I don't believe he thinks all these horses over the years are the 'best ever', I really don't.Hes an intelligent trainer who does appear to have at least some sembalance  of an inferiority complex, at least thats how I read his words and body language from time to time. He knows how good his horses are (generally), of course given the depth of talent at his stable that 2nd and ever 3rd strings will win now and again, esp given the nature of pacemaking in horse racing and that fact that many times the jocks in behind will simly misjudge. This marketing machine he seems to HAVE to push CONSTANTLY is why I feel sorry for him. No other trainer is expected to do this, at least not as much as Aidan.

Now maybe he really does believe Camelot is the best hes changed but there is no way HE BELIEVES all these horses that hes 'best ever''d really are the best hes trained. Unfortunately he is expected to take advantage of time, and when a big race is won or two or three hes gotta be on telling the world this is the greatest horse we have ever seen even tho he doesnt believe it.

I feel sorry for the chap, and find it surprising that people actually take what he says literally without actually considering HIS situation and what is expected of him.

I dont agree wildman, insofar as you say that "his son who may ultimately wrongly take the blame for the Leger defeat", imho he got it wrong. Probably the pressure got to him.Too many instructions, maybe, on what to do, when to go etc.,with stamina concerns over the distance a big factor, he is only a young fella you know. For him it was mission impossible. The mistake they made, and are surely regretting, is not putting Frankie up at Doncaster. He would have won comfortably imho and then Camelot, the history maker, would be retired with job done .....................a stallion.
Report RoyalAcademy October 8, 2012 4:50 PM BST
I have always been of the opinion that Aidan nominating his son as de facto stable jockey can only ever end in tears. As a business there can't be any room for sentiment and the young lad couldn't possibly have the wisdom and experience for one of the hottest hot seats in the world. Every problem or crisis was going to be exacerbated by the father/son connection. If "the lads" are annoyed with the young lad putting up overweight on a regular basis or unable to ride a horse like Camelot on Sunday what happens when they voice their displeasure to dad? If Aidan's hand is ever forced on this issue, his days in Ballydoyle will be numbered. What a silly position for these uber wealthy guys to find themselves in.

The Coolmore situation is interesting: up to now they have led the field thanks to untouchable stallions and their uncanny ability to repalce one champion with another. Goffs last week was amazingly positive but it was Sea The Stars that was the pre-eminent stallion. The Arabs may not be supporting Coolmore-sired youngsters but it seems that in Jim Bolger they may have suddenly unlocked the secret to competing successfully against Coolmore with, ironically, sons of Coolmore champions. I don't for a moment think that there are financial difficulties but the level of competition is increasing all the time with endless newcomers from Qatar and the Middle East changing the face of the game. We have been fortunate here in Ireland to a certain extent in that the advisors surrounding the Arabs are generally silver spoon merchants and Sheikh Mohammed himself seems an extraordinarily stubborn man. As I've often remarked how he has wasted tens of millions in past decades is flabbergasting even if it's source is an endless pit. If you take a critical look at the present roster of Coolmore stallions I think that they need some serious additions. John Magnier will not be around forever and his departure from the scene will leave a huge gap to be filled in Ireland. He is a genius.

Irish and British racing is also in a parlous state because of bookmaker hegemony and the action is now firmly in France, Australia and the Far East. Racing in Germany and Italy is in very bad shape the the Americans have ruined their industry through bute and lasix not to mention the fact that your average "horseplayer" is regarded as something nasty on the sole of your shoe.
This year's flat season in Ireland was a virtual non-event with the weather not helping much. No-one is interested in the flat so most days are to support the industry and racecourses are happy to get their hands on TV money. Classic days have been ruined by lack of competition and the one saving grace for the industry is the strong export markets we have developed. Coolmore are also to the forefront of the China Syndrome and that's probably where the future is.

The outlook for the flat-racing landscape in ten years time is not pretty.

The managers and side-kicks might be feeling the pinch a little bit but the Tabors and Magniers of the World have more money than ever, of that I am certain

Excellent stuff Royal Academy. I wonder what are the odds of Camelot being retired to stud in Febuary due to "an injury sustained while being prepared for the Tattersalls Gold Cup"

The truth is the loss of both Montjeu and Danehill in quick succession not to mention the inevitable demise of the great one himself Sadlers Wells has put a huge dent in the once untouchable Coolmore conveyor belt, yes they still have son of Galileo, his legacy is almost as famous as his father already, so I'm sure Coolmore are hardly in panic mode.

They could do with a new trainer all the same, not one that is all consumed by Jesus Christ in our now secular society, oh yeh Aidan don't forget you are the messiah, but only a simple horse trainer after all?, wasn't it great to see Tom Hogan pick up a group one with the vastly improved Lord Gordon, lord it Tom because you don't exist in the sycophantic world of horse racing, if your name is not O'Brien Weld or Oxx you can't train you know?

or Sole Power for Eddie Lynam, you can't train fast horses guys, only the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ can?
Report flushgordon1 October 9, 2012 11:02 AM BST
to be fair the coolmore 2 year olds look a poor bunch this year, and if they thought the had the next best ever  amongst them comealot would be off to stud probably after the irish derby.
he will probably have to stay in training to keep the hype going if the nexts seasons then 3 year olds are as bad as they look.
and if he can be campaigned against this years poor crop of three year old they could reignite the best ever bollux.
but then again enke may just be a late improving three year old and the gamble might fail if he gets whacked every time next season by him.

I'm no lunatic premier, maybe if you look a little closer at the guy you're steadfast in defending you might find a lunatic, but I'm sorry for been honest and its me thats the lunatic?.

Are you suggesting that Tom Hogan could be parachuted in to replace Aidan for next year and the results would be roughly the same silvergreaser?
Report p_r_e_m_i_e_r__f_a_n_t_a_s_y October 9, 2012 5:51 PM BST
I'm not steadfast in defending anybody but you have an unhealty obsession with the O'Brien family that you really need to get over, you are constantly rambling like a madman about the family and the organisation they work for, some of the times of these ramblings would suggest when liquored up (could be wrong though).
Report silvergreaser October 9, 2012 5:57 PM BST
Well I'll put it this way bassanio, Henry Cecil has been virtully hospitalised for nearly the entire 4yr career of Frankel, most probably trained by his assistant and the experienced work riders, yes the horse is something special but when Henry wasn't around he didn't actually crumble in on himself did he, why? because a trainer can't turn an ugly duckling into a swan, in this case a swan to a duckling, but its ok guys its me thats the lunatic because I dare question your pre-concieved ideas of what constitutes a horse trainer, imo the horse defines the trainer not the trainer the horse.
Report silvergreaser October 9, 2012 6:03 PM BST
Look premier I can't stand how they operate, I once was a huge admirer of the Coolmore operation now I've lost all respect for them, once you could back their horses with confidence now I'm terrified of touching any of theirs, I'd think twice with stolen money, might be prudent to back them now because Joseph is within touching distance of the jockey championship mind you.

Oh and yes you're right premier I like a drink, I don't think I've ever denied that fact.
Report Bassanio October 9, 2012 6:16 PM BST
There is an awful lot of judgement in picking the staff to work with you and picking the right men to do the job. It can be clearly seen in cases such as Michael Jarvis where Varian is proving that he was obviously a very capable assistant. Likewise Eddie Hales was the backbone of the Bailey operation.

I don't know the staffing situation in Ballydoyle but I am sure there are many that would have worked alongside or under Vincent and they are worth there weight in gold now. However I am equally sure that Aidan is also something very special as his results have proven ever since he was in Pilltown. If Aidan was allowed to train exactly as he saw fit, I am sure he would be doing some things differently but he must at all times be alive to the fact that he has to promote these horses for stud purposes and at the moment the pressure seems to be getting the better of him.
Report silvergreaser October 9, 2012 6:26 PM BST
Of course Aidan can train horses that there can be no doubt, but I always wondered what other capable trainers not within a country mile of what Aidan has at his disposal think when the media are adorning Aidan with accolades even god himself would be proud of, maybe just maybe another top class horse just won a horse race.

Interesting wouldn't it to hear what these trainers really think bassanio?.

This seasons flat season has been a near disaster with soft/heavy ground far more in evidence than decent flat ground. While the Ballydoyle 2 y o's look a poor bunch this season I would hold off on definite judgements because of this . There may very well be a couple of classic hopefuls that have yet to see a racecourse.
Have to agree with Royal Academy's post re Joseph O'Brien. It is becoming clearer all the time that he is not a top jockey and as Coolmore is an international business the situation will not continue and something will have to give . Think it would have been better to have him sharing the rides with others and let him gain experience slowly.

I think the lad (JPOB) will have learned a lot this year irrespective if he is kept on or not,he made some mistakes alright-they all do and even the legendary MJ Kinane had his moments so I wouldn't be too hard on him.

not sure why everyone is completely writing off their 2 yrs olds. fair enough no group 1 winners yet i dont think but plenty of maiden winners that could progress and they're bred to do it.
