Another nice and patently decent man but a dreadful trainer. He has a state of the art training establishment and although he has sent out many big winners he has ruined some other good horses and the recent exploits of Royal Diamond has told us plenty.
Ursa Major and Hartside have told us that Johnny Murtagh is going to be a great trainer,Royal Diamond has shouted it,he was sent this six year old because Jonjo had ruined him not alone does he get him back to his best from his Prescott days but he improves him and incredibly wins a sort of classic with him and in another coincidence beats the Aga Khans horse a head.It is hard to credit that Jonjo managed to get Royal Diamond not only beaten but destroyed in three maiden hurdle runs.

For once i totally agree with you Wildman, this will not be a John Oxx type thread i will be amazed if a lot of people do not agree with you on this.

rocket when the sligo races were on the meeting that you attended did you not say you were 15 minutes from cleveragh?
Report tony57 September 17, 2012 12:07 PM BST
one of the worst there has been imo...he should have a lot more winners than he does..i never back his horses although i have no doubt he stops them....but he is a private trainer in all but name...

i know responding to a thread like this is foolhardy.

over the years i have employed 8 different uk trainers for horses i owned or was involved with. jonjo trained for me when he was up in ivygill, fees there were 100 a week when the punt was stronger than sterling, so it was cheaper to get them trained in the uk at that time especially if you could claim back the vat.

pound for pound out of the 8 trainers, many of whom have good strike rates and are regarded as shrewd, jonjo was simply the best. he may not be able to keep a horse running consistently over the course of a season, he does know from instinct when those run of the mill handicappers are coming into form and the trick is then placing them in the right race. he likes a bet and short ones were never his cup of tea. since going to jackdaws he has a different type of set up as he is a tenant unlike up in cumbria where as he used to tell me he joint owned the place with the aib in birmingham.. over the course of a winter jj would strongly fancy 5 or 6 in what on paper would be deemed tricky contests, they would not all win, some would and you would be certain of a level stakes profit. other trainers in the same scheme of things would put you in the poorhouse.
i know the yard is impossible to follow for form students, from my experience as a past owner, he can most certainly train. i would guess none of the other contributers on this thread have had a nag with jj, and are looking at the ops question through a different prism.

fair point keen leader,
ive been involved with only 2 horses..one in ireland and one over here...i was making my point as a punter..you have more knowlage of him, although as you say he was in cumbria then..he is a private trainer in all but name now,...thanks for putting me straight..

Or would the right words be he stops them more often than he lets them try Keen Leader?

A truly brainless and needless thread. Not surprising really considering how low this forum has got over the years. Not only has O'Neill trained hundreds upon hundreds of winners he has also bagged many a big race throughout his career. Given the right horse and normal luck he has showed he can do just as good a job as anyone. The most laughable thing about this silly thread is that nobody has mentioned the fact that Andrew Tinkler has openly thanked Johnjo for admitting that the horse was'nt enjoying hurdling and may benefit for going back on the flat. Also Tinkler applauded O'Neill for having Royal Diamond 'like a pin' in rediness for his trip across the Irish Sea for another flat campaign.
Report silvergreaser September 17, 2012 9:43 PM BST
Oh and Get me out of here was campaigned like a selling plater until the money was down?
Report wildmanfromborneo September 17, 2012 10:11 PM BST
Its a discussion with an odd brainless post,Joevalue147 is the only one who believed Tinkler,he was just being kind and its what nearly all owners say when they are removing a horse from someone,he also doesn`t see that the praise for the astonishing improvement in Royal Diamond is down to Johnny Murtagh something that is worthy of comment.
Keen Leaders post is both constructive and informative and probably correct but he is talking about his days before he moved to Jackdaws Castle, because he is in such a great training centre with the best of horses he is judged by high standards and to me he has not delivered.Jonjo is now a great man to get horses from as he doesn`t get the most out of his horses anymore,Royal Diamond being a classic example.
Report joevalue147 September 17, 2012 10:15 PM BST
Yes and when D Day arrived he was beaten a snot by Final Approach. Your point being Silver??  Should they have flogged him to death first run of the season and finish him for the rest of the year??  All good horses are primed for targets. Any trainer worth his salt will admit this. Every good horse will be trained to progress throughout the season. Obviously the really good NH horses cannot be revved up for 9 or 10 targets year in year out. They would be burnt out after a couple of seasons if this was the case and no good to anyone.

Only good thing about it was "get me out of here" ran into all sorts of trouble when the money was down, its called "KARMA"
Report Rocketfingers September 17, 2012 10:17 PM BST
I have to say i totally agree with Wildmanfromborneo on this, which as everyone knows is rare but he has not delivered as one would have expected since his move to jackdaws.

To be fair me and you have the same opinion but you have to respect a man who's had horses with a certain trainer and what he says.

Thanks Silver, at the end of the day Keen Leader knows more about JJ O'Neill that Wildmanfromborneo does, he just needs to accept that and respect it.

I have great respect for Keen Leader and acknowledge the worth of his post in the reply Rocketfingers highlighted, however you can disagree with someone without rancour also our positions are not miles apart,i am talking about the present he is mainly talking about his days in Cumbria.
Report Rocketfingers September 17, 2012 10:46 PM BST
Yes and i agree with you but at the same time you have to be humble enough to hold your hands up and say i got this wrong boys, Keen Leader (who in my mind is the best poster on here) and who knows Jim Joe more than either of us.

You compound too easily.
You are blinded by the fact he owns horses, when you owned horses who were your trainers?
Report Rocketfingers September 17, 2012 11:04 PM BST
I had one in the Curragh with a trainer i had one in the south with a top trainer and i had few locally trained or close enough and a friend who is a permit holder and he trained a few. Mainly jumpers, you've never owned one?
Report wildmanfromborneo September 17, 2012 11:12 PM BST
I never owned one couldn`t afford to.
How come you are afraid to name your trainers.

Report Rocketfingers September 17, 2012 11:20 PM BST
Not afraid to just don't want to, my business. None of them were much good to be brutally honest, last one was a disaster Laugh and the one in the Curragh never got to the track even, it's put me off ownership although i would think about it again maybe in a a couple of years. I do still enjoy racing but i rarely beton it these days, i bet football and i do that pretty badly at the moment if i am being truthful, again. Happy

Some day richters, who reminds of the sahara desert, is not going to follow me around with his what seems like an endless list of mindnumbing questions.
