The Turf Club today issued a brief statement outlining new procedures relating to telephone and banking records of Licensees.

The Turf Club has reached agreement with both the Trainers and Jockeys Associations regarding the procedures that will take place in the event of an investigation into betting malpractice.

Should the Turf Club wish to see the telephone or banking records of either a Trainer or Jockey they must first get the approval of an independent "Adjudicating Officer."

The adjudicating officer will be a barrister or solicitor who has practiced for a minimum of 10 years and who shall not have been a member of either the Turf Club or Irish National Steeplechase Committee, nor served as an official of either of them.

The relevent rule changes will be published in the Racing Calendar.

The Turf Club statement does not go into the details of which telephones or indeed bank records will fall under these new powers.

In other racing jurisdictions Licence holders must register their telephones and face sanctions for failing to do so.

Commenting on the agreement, Turf Club Senior Steward, Roderick Ryan, said that he was pleased that this matter has now been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction and he also thanked Noel Meade, Jim Kavanagh of the Irish Racehorse Trainers Association and Andrew Coonan of the Irish Jockeys Association for their help in resolving the matter.
