I don't really back horses lads honestly, but i'm guessing it's best odds guaranteed? If that's it that's a poor move by Powers imo. Don't let my question get in the way of the real issue here and that's Powers move lads !

Report Rocketfingers September 3, 2012 6:07 PM BST
No mate, way too short, would not put you off Bohs+1.25 if you fancied them. I've had a few bets but value is gone in all of them. I'm waiting on one, hoping the line changes in Asia to get on, i'll stick it up before i leave for our game if it does.

Heard L***S have withdrawn this offer in selected shops
Report Kelly September 4, 2012 11:19 AM BST
I suspect that turnover in the high street shops is declining yearly .  Certainly on the ( odd) occasions I visit our local outlets there are lots fewer around than some years ago .  The only one with decently populated floors are the afore mentioned thread headliner , presumably because there is some value to be had at times .

Limiting the bigger punters in those shops will only reduce the footfall ( punters like company and exchange of ideas / info , and a bit of banter ) ,  but I expect they know that and will be able to reduce staff ultimately ( you dont need staff to look after the numpties playing the FOBT's ).

Balance the ( slight ) increase in profitability due to limits against lower turnover and decreasing capital value of said shops is one for the bean counters who run most of the bookie operations nowadays .  They only want turnover on things other than horse racing . If there were no racing channels there would be little turnover on horse racing compared with the heady days of yesteryear.

British racing bled dry by the bookmakers and more recently the racecourses with their market-forces capitalism.

It's reached the stage that an up-and-coming young trainer in England is deemed a success because he wins more that 100k in prize money. The trainer's percentage wouldn't keep Michael Stoute in claret and port for a month.

Would shops survive without racing in spite of the bookmakers efforts to change the landscape? What do you think Kelly? The question comes from the Free State where FOBT's don't apply by the way.

My main concern about British racing is when will it dawn on someone that paying eighty thousand at Brightwells for an Irish winning pointer to win a class 6 Fakenham bumper (vtw 1376) doesn't make much sense and hasn't for a long time.

In some ways I'm very surprised there aren't more english owners following angela merkel's bailout funds over here a la Tinkler.

British racing is in a parlous state , Royal . Part of the general malaise that pervades society increasingly on the other side of the "pond" . Incompetence abounds on a daily basis , starting from the top ( and its not just racing I am talking about ) .  The Aussie guy knows his onions , but guess he might be running uphill weighed down by the dinosaurs .

The funding system in Britain gets relatively little help from the dependent parties involved , including bookmakers despite high profile sponsorship etc . The bookies are run by the bean counters , the income from FOBT's at £900 per machine per week ( and 4 per shop ) is a good example of a blind eye being turned to legalised removal of funds from general spend . Racing in UK will continue to decline despite the efforts of Frankel etc  , more and more British trainers are going outside UK because of prize money , despite the inordinate cost of transporting valuable animals and their handlers across the globe .

Irish racing is still relatively healthy , good prize money , too many horses , lots of success internationally  , but keeping up the gallop in a constrained economy cant be easy .

Betting shops would not survive in Ireland without horse racing as its staple diet , as not that many of us are interested in betting on the colour of the refs underpants for an English premiership match . England / UK is different , its not Ireland , south or north , we in Ireland  like our horses and our dogs essentially .

Horse ownership is a very slippery slope , one friend owned a leg of several animals over the last 15 years . One horse won about 50 k over 3 or 4 seasons , at all sorts of prices . Only money they made was from successful bets  , that balanced their books  , and they were lucky in that regard , most animals are mediocre and struggle to win races despite being beautiful looking animals  , which no doubt is part of the attraction of the sport of kings .
