Ger Holian: Leading the charge
Wednesday, January 30, 2013

By Tommy Lyons irishexaminer.ie

If it weren’t a dream, this weekend’s National Coursing Meeting could be a logistical nightmare for prolific trainer Ger Holian.
In a stunning season, which has yielded nine All-age Cup successes and numerous Trial Stake victories, the handler has an unprecedented 13 runners to transport from his base in Athenry, Co. Galway to the three-day meeting in Powerstown Park, Clonmel.

Holian has enjoyed considerable success at the meeting and has brought eight runners in a previous year, but the responsibility of handling such a numerically strong team has weighed on his mind.

“You remember the time you never had a runner and you realise how great it is to have so many,” he says. “But it could be too many. I’m very excited but just hope I don’t get too nervous.

“When I won the Derby with Murtys Gang I only had two greyhounds. I’ve had seven or eight runners at the meeting in the past but never this many.

“I would hate it if they all ran bad. You think you have 13 and you’re great but Clonmel can humble you very quickly.

“It’s unknown territory — I could lose the head when I see the Lodge Gate.”

It won’t happen, of course. His record speaks for itself. Two Derby victories (Murtys Gang in 2002, Adios Alonso in 2010), one Oaks success (Rith Gan Gaisce in 2005), three Champion Stakes wins and numerous consolation stakes, provide ample evidence that Holian is adept at producing them in peak condition on the day.

“The hard work is done,” he continues. “We started preparing them seven or eight weeks ago and at this stage we’re just waiting for the days to go by.

“It’s a worry that everything won’t go very well. You really don’t want to blow it. It’s where you want to be, what you’ve worked for all season.

“I’ll bring the dogs down to Pat Buckley’s kennels, in Cappawhite, a few days before the meeting. I should have them all down by Thursday evening.

“I’ve won a trophy every year I’ve stayed with Pat so it’s been very lucky for me and I’m just hoping that run can continue.”

Holian is one of the dominant forces in the sport right now but what’s the secret to his success?

“You need a lot of hard work and a lot of common sense,” he explains. “They need to be awful fit but some dogs can’t take the hard work.

“You can go to the track, run around it once and not have to come back for another week. But they could go up the field, get a hunt for 30 seconds and have to go back up an hour later. They must have great powers of recovery. If you have a fast one with that, you should go close.

“A lot of it is bred into them. Coursing breeding will stand up better than on the track — a good coursing bitch will usually breed well.”

It’d be folly to dismiss them out of hand but, by Holian’s own admission, his three challengers for the Derby, led by In Cahoots, are considered outsiders for the big prize.

Not so his six-strong challenge for the Greyhound and Pet World Oaks, which is headed by the much-touted Blades Of Steel.

The bitch has been at the head of the betting for the competition since she qualified in Rathkeale on her first outing under Holian’s care.

“I would never compare them but she certainly has the speed. A lot of people say the Musical Time’s (progeny) won’t go up the hill in Powerstown Park but I had her mother, Blades Of Glory, and she would climb any hill.

“When they come in, you don’t care who their mother or father is. You just want to do the best for the owner, for the dog, and for yourself.

“Her litter sister, Blades Of Joy, is considered the outsider of my six but if I have five better than her, I’m in some position.”

It’s unfortunate that his two definite starters in the Champion Stakes, Bridewell Kieran and Latest Trick, go head to head in the first round, but it hasn’t tempered the trainer’s hopes of lifting the trophy.

“I couldn’t be sure which of them will win, but I would be hopeful that whichever it is, he could go on and win the stake. They’re both very good dogs.”

His sole challenger in the Champion Bitch Stake is Bossa Nova Babe, a daughter of his former Oaks winner, Rith Gan Gaisce, and he insists if she can get over the first round, she will have a great chance.

Like her kennel companions, if she’s good enough, she won’t fail for having had the most meticulous preparation. But Holian remains cautiously optimistic.

“Just because you have a lot of runners doesn’t mean you’re sure to win,” he reasons.

“The key is, when you have one good enough to win in Clonmel, not to let the opportunity slip by.”

There’s a photo that has pride of place on a wall in a comfortable home in Cork city, a photo that has been a long, long time in the framing.
Front and centre in the picture is a magnificently conditioned animal, Connells Cú, and prime among the smiling faces gathered around is 85-year-old Tom O’Connell.

The reason for the photo, the reason for all the celebration? Late and all as it has come, Tom finally has a dog going to Clonmel, to the National Coursing Meeting, the All-Ireland championships of a pastime almost as old as time itself.

“I’m in seventh heaven, never thought I’d see this day. It’s so hard to get to Clonmel, any time. The family has always been involved in dogs and I’m in a photo from way back when Factotum won the Cork Cup, a long, long time ago now. He was the best greyhound we ever had but I had no part in the ownership of that dog. Three of my brothers, Donie, Noel and Paschal, they were the ones always directly involved, first class doggie men. Donie and Noel are dead now, Lord have mercy on them, and I’m involved with Paschal in this one.”

How he got involved, even how they came to own Connells Cú, is a story in itself. “Richie Maher owns La Torre, the dam, and he’s great buddies with my nephew Mike. He brought La Torre to Mike’s place in Emly — that’s where I’m from originally — to be ‘whelped’ (born), and they reared the litter there, in Emly. The pups were sold off and when everyone had come and made their choice, there was a dog and a bitch left – we got those.”

So they were left with the leftovers, so to speak? “I wouldn’t say that — it hasn’t worked out so badly, has it!” Tom’s son Paul takes up the story: “Michael (his cousin) texted me and asked if Tom and myself would like to get involved in a fawn dog for the year. I asked if Flor — my brother-in-law, married to my sister Geraldine — could also get involved and Michael said yes. So there’s Tom, Paschal, Michael and myself, and Flor Crowley, from Dunmanway.”

Right, so that’s two Tipperarymen and two Corkmen (“I’ve a Tipperary father, a Cavan mother, born in Dublin, but I’m an out-and-out Corkman,” proclaims Paul, proudly).

Where then does that leave Tom, and where does it leave the dog — Tipperary or Cork?

Tom: “I was born and raised in a pub, O’Connell’s in Emly, and never worked at anything else. I went to Dublin in 1945 and worked in a bar, got married to Anna May in 1955, bought a pub in Cork in 1969, in Douglas Street, and we’ve lived here since. But I’m a mad Tipperaryman, always was and always will be – you have to be if you have any kind of heart in you at all, you never give up your own.

“I got some slagging over the years in that pub — the day Cork and Tipp would be playing, murder! Other than that though I found Cork people to be the best in the world — after the match was over they were the finest, and I’ll tell you something now, after Tipperary I’d always shout for Cork. Limerick? Now that’s different!”

And the dog? “Put it this way,” says Paul, “In Emly they’re saying it’s mostly Tipperary but with a little bit of Cork! To be honest we don’t care where he’s from, it’s just great to be there.”

There are two others in this story, however, two ladies Tom would like especially mentioned. One is his wife of 57 years, Anna May, the other is his sister-in-law, Philomena O’Connell, nee Ryan.

“Anna May isn’t involved at all but she’s a great woman, coming up on 88 and no problem on her. The week we qualified for Clonmel we were in Galbally for two days then Templetuohy for another two, where we won the Trial Stake – we were coursing for four days out of the seven and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Then there’s Philomena, Paschal’s wife, and without her this wouldn’t be happening. Early in the season our fella ran in Limerick and he got a real grueller – I never saw anything like it. Grueller? He collapsed afterwards. Michael O’Donovan is the trainer — the same man who’s training Jimmy Barry Murphy’s dog Jackson’s Lane — and he was disgusted. He called over Philomena – her brother Michael Ryan won the Oaks with Lively Air – and said to her, ‘You bring him home to Emly.’ In three weeks she had the dog perfect, absolutely perfect.

The secret? Butter, that’s what she gave him, she told me she gave him three pounds of butter in total. She’d cut it into little squares, give him a few lumps of it every day, for his insides. You know the way good coursing dogs have great broad backs on them — after a gruelling they lose that and they never get it back, you can nearly see it falling off them. This fella never lost his back – I thought he’d never walk again but he came as good as ever, thanks to Philomena.

“That would have something to do with the way he was reared too of course, the feeding he got. After the three weeks Michael O’Donovan said he never saw the likes of it, the recovery, but after all the butter he had put on a bit of weight and Michael had a big problem trying to knock it off him. It wasn’t til he ran him in a Trial Stake in Ballyragget that he finally began to see the butter coming off!

‘Ballyragget made a man of him!’, that’s what Michael says. He was beaten there, a good dog belonging to Brendan Matthews – King Rooney, remember the name! But he finally made it through, in Templetuohy.”

Just goes to show, doesn’t it? It’s never too late to dream, never.

* The draw for the Derby, however, hasn't been kind to Connells Cú as he has been paired with Tilford Tom, one of the favourites to lift the classic, in the opening round and he will face an uphill battle from the word go this weekend

Long-running Vinnie Jones greyhound case settled at High Court

By Tom Tuite irishindependent.ie

A LEGAL action over a failed drug test on a winning greyhound part owned by actor and former professional footballer Vinnie Jones was settled in the High Court today.

Mr Jones is a member of a three-man syndicate which ran a greyhound called Boavista to victory in the €80,000 JP McManus Irish Cup in Limerick in February 2006.

The dog failed a drug test and an Irish Coursing Club (ICC) inquiry disqualified it. No adverse findings were made personally against Mr Jones or his fellow syndicate members, greyhound trainer Pat Curtin and bookie Denis Gould.

However, the syndicate, along with Mr Curtin's sister and greyhound handler, Bridget Curtin, sought a High Court judicial review of the ICC's decision. They claimed they were not afforded proper procedures by the ICC in relation to the inquiry and also alleged there had not been full disclosure of the allegations against them.

The ICC opposed their application as did the owner of the greyhound Wilton Time which came second, retired businessman Michael Kelleher, whose said his dog became the winner as a result of the disqualification of Boavista.

Today, David Sutton SC, for the syndicate, told High Court president, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, the case had been settled and the judge could make an order quashing a decision of the ICC inquiry committee of August 9, 2011, disqualifying Boavista.

Under the settlement terms, which were handed into court today, it was agreed between all parties to accept a decision of the ICC's executive committee made yesterday (Tuesday) to declare that there be no winner of the 2006 Irish Cup.

The Co Limerick Coursing Club is to be directed to pay the retained prize monies from that race to the owners of Wilton Time and Boavista in the proportion agreed between the syndicate and Mr Kelleher, the settlement stated.

Yesterday's decision of the ICC executive was passed in settlement of the entire proceedings with no order as to the costs of any party, it also stated.

Mr Justice Kearns said he was glad the parties had reached a resolution of what was obviously a very difficult matter.

Vinnie Jones, who was not in court, was a member of Wimbledon FC's 'Crazy Gang' team which beat Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final. He later went on to capitalise on his tough image in the game to play the role of a hard man in movies.

IRISH COURSING CLUB

It was a lovely day here in Clonmel. Bright sunshine. Last night’s wind caused a little damage at the racecourse but nothing that can’t be fixed by 11.30am on Saturday morning. The field itself never looked as well. We still keep thinking that we have three more days to go but reality is going to bite very soon.

The reserved signs went up on the 13 stables that were booked in the courtyard this evening. The Oaks winner definitely came out of one of them last year and very possibly the Derby winner too. What are the chances of a repeat?  If it does happen, we will have to give them to the highest bidder next year.

Hopefully by now everyone has got their hands on this week’s Sporting Press and in particular our 40 page National Meeting supplement. Planning for this started many months ago and we are delighted with the way it has turned out. A huge thanks to those who contributed to it in any way. The names of the 2013 Derby and Oaks winners are definitely inside it but after that you have to make up your own mind. If by chance you leave your copy at home you can always call into the Secretary’s Office where it will be on sale over the three days.

The card for the first day of the 88th National Coursing Meeting went to the printers last night. It has come a long way from the 8 page black and white card of yesteryear. But when you go to Cheltenham or to an All Ireland GAA Final you expect to get a professional looking programme so it is only right that ours should be of the same standard, maybe even better.

It looks as though Clonmel town is facing a siege that it has not seen since the days of Cromwell. Every second call to the office is from someone looking for accommodation. The girls here have been great and have found beds (or floors) for many of the callers but at this stage it’s getting more and more difficult. Temperatures are not expected to dip too low so maybe it’s time to take that tent and sleeping bag out of the attic !!

Safe journey to everyone that is travelling to Clonmel . Take your time, you have three action packed days and nights to look forward to.

lots to digest after the last 3 days me thinks....some of the judging and slipping over the 3 days left a lot to be desired....there are too many inconsistencies with having 2 slippers and 2 judges....there should only be one of each me thinks to try and keep some sort of consistency at least....there were a couple of dreadful judging decisions over the 3 days but the oaks semi final was not one of them....fair play to John O Connell on that decision because he called it 100% right.....as for the slipping...how a dog in a bye course in the quarter finals of the champion stakes is given a 40+ second hunt is beyond belief....and ultimately cost the dog the champion stakes.....and the slipping in the finals was all over the shop....some dogs coming away 2 and nearly 3 lts ahead in some courses....

enjoyable 3 days....derby winner was awesome and oaks winner a real gutsy winner too....great to see Barney Mooney back in the winners enclosure down there...

Written by S McGarry.
As owner of miss fury, I write this with a heavy heart.
The last week has been one of the most devastating i've witnessed and believe me i've had many physically and emotionally.
The bitch won the course, of that i have no doubt, and from the reaction of the crowd and everyone there, only the judge thought otherwise.
There are two great loves in my life, my family and sport, namely greyhounds and hurling. When loughgiel won the all-Ireland in 1983 and a local bitch went close in an oaks(tracking), a dream was born that one day loughgiel would again win this and i'd won the oaks.
With loughgiel winning the all-Ireland in 2012 and missfury qualifying for clonmel the dream was alive and kicking.
Gerry Holian, a credit to the sport, said that getting to clonmel was like going to hell and back and after the misfortunate gruelling quarter final that miss fury had, because of the short slip, I was on a high as i honestly gave the bitch no chance in the semi, she had other ideas and i was ecstatic as she turned the hare in front, what followed was gut wrenching, the judge gave her beat. I could not believe it, nor could the crowd that much was obvious.
John o connell had single handidly destroyed the dream that was, he had singled me and the bitch out for a shocking decision. Really and truly could such a genuine mistake bé made by someone with his pedigree? Only he can answer that, and perhaps he will, in due course, enlighten us.
In any other sport in the world, there would bé consequences, in this sport i leave this in the capable hands of the I.C.C
So, as Brian Devilly stated on monday, today, for some of us dreams will bé realised, for others the dream goes on and for me the dream has became a dark place and i am left with no choice but to hang up my soaked, mud stained boots. To the new owners of all my dogs, including miss fury, i wish well. John o connor you let down the sport, your family, the I.C.C, the spectators, the owners and the breeders.
To all stewarts, especially the three that came to the van, I thank you, to the men and woman alike who consoled me I thank you, to all whom helped me through the festival in all ways I thank you

Sadly i didn't make Clonmel due to family problems but i spoke to a man who definitely wouldn't know how to lie if he tried and is one of the shrewdest men in the game and i asked him about the Miss Fury call and he said she was definitely up.

And just after stopping that video were the dogs turned the hare the white definitely was in front turning it, all i can think was the Judge was further up the field to make that call

the dog was owned by john sullivan the adios alonso man he was sent to his trainer in the north to a small kennel were he didnt settle in very well so he was sent back to john who left him with rachael to train but he got beat easily in his few runs with her so he was sold for 600 euro to the boys who have him now to run in there local two course duffer and the rest is history.he wasnt injured when bought but think he got injured after his win in waterford where he win the cup an on the bookies clocks was at least a couple of lengths faster each round than smart ali the oaks winner which proved to be a good line of form.
i think this goes to show u need a lot of luck in coursing and most of all there still remains a big difference between training a coursing dog an a track dog in big kennels. but well done to all concerned great achievement an gives us all a little hope for the future roll on nx year!!!
