Everything possible is being done to make Joseph OBrien champion jockey this season.Horses are having the legs run off them in a most uncharacteristic fashion,a helicopter was chartered to bring Joseph from Dundalk to Killarney for two very ordinary races,if he does win the championship it will be some achievement. He is nineteen with weight problems so he is very restricted in his rides, doubt if anything like this has happened before. Fair play to Rubyisgodinthesaddle for flagging this up and snaffling the big prices,I couldn't see it beforehand but have changed my mind.
If Joseph wins the jockeys title it will be no big deal but the media will of course make a big deal out of it, all achievements should be put into perspective, its horses that are winning races not jockeys, they're just steering them from A to B, in Josephs case a succession of the best bred horses in the world to steer.
I'm sure if Gary Carroll was first jockey for O'Brien this year he'd be clear at the top of the jockeys table because of his ability to ride at much lighter weights.

Dedication and temprement are also needed........we all about the lad who could have made it only for one excuse or another. We have a lad playing hurling for us at the moment.......he is 20 and spent the last 3 years in England with a premiership and championship soccer team.......all you hear is he could have made it only for this and that........the chap is an unreliable pis*head.

Magnum my opinion is, if you turn professional suggests you must have been doing something right in the first place, you can obviously ride horses?, if you can't you usually end up shovelling the sh!t.
I don't think there is a huge amount of difference between most professional jockeys ability wise, but their is of course often a huge amount of difference in the ability of the horses they ride, who you are or been in the right place at the right time will usually decide the heirarchy?.
All jockeys make mistakes at some time or other, and the odd time a professional might get the better of an inexperienced rider in a close finish, but overall the majority of the time the result of the race has feck all to do with the person on board, they just so happen to have been riding the fastest horse in the race.
Thats why I learned down the years not to factor in jockeys when I'm having a bet, in fact horses ridden by the so called top jockeys are often priced up much shorter than they would be if ridden by a less fashionable but capable rider.

Some good points u make there silver, fwiw,it doesn't bother me who's on board if a fancy a horse,in fact,if i fancy a horse and a lesser known jockey is on board all the better, because you know you'll be getting a better price the majority of the time, Same with trainers, ive taken advantage of this on many an occasion,My fav combination use to be Stack/Lordan, Bookies have cottened onto these in the last few years though.

Joseph O`Brien has a ride in every race in Down Royal tonight and only two of these are for his father. It will be some achievement by all if he becomes champion at 19,Martin Quirke was champion as an apprentice in 1920 but he had no weight problems.

You haven't a clue you laughed when i told you he was a great bet for it, now you're changing your tune when the lad hits the front. It sums up what you know about racing, which is nothing. You've been exposed again !

Read the last line of my opening post,it was Rubyisgodinthesaddle that stated he was backing him for the jockeys championship,i stated then that i could not see it happening,he hasn`t won it yet but even if he doesn`t i was still wrong. One thing a gambler gets used to is being wrong so nothing new there but Rubyisgodinthesaddle is on some run with his threads and has been consistently right for a while, long may it continue.

silvergreaser's general comments about jockeys are absolutely correct. The problem with the ridiculous title 'champion jockey' is that it means nothing. It doesn't mean that a jockey beat all the others in some kind of equal competition and so is 'the best' . He just happens to have sat on more winners than anyone else....many of those rides being steering jobs , hot favs. and generally horses in the first three in the betting (e.g. like McCoy and Scudamore before him) Any number of riders given the ammunition J P O'B has would similarly be riding more winners and in line to become the winningmost rider. That's no slur on Joseph -just the way it is. The media ( who must write about something) make a big deal out of it -it isn't.

Gary O'Brien gave Hail Mary O'Connor more airtime last night to talk tripe about to so-called race for the jockeys' title. It must be churning huge sums in the offices!!
I thought she was quite Edwardian in referring constantly to "Smullen" yet the other jocks all possessed forenames. Even R Hall wouldn't be so blatant.

Shaneboy,Rubyisgodinthesaddle tipped Camelot for the Derby when he was a 16/1 shot,he also tipped Joseph O`Brien for the title when he was 5/1 but your **** erotic analagies are very revealing. Bobbybocala,Rubyisgodinthesaddle tipped Joseph O`Brien for the title first, the other loon just copied him surely you can see he is incapable of independent thought. When i created this thread i stated i had got it wrong so i was hardly hiding it,you get used to getting things wrong.

Everyone laughs at you so nothing new there,he was 5/1 when Rubyisgodinthesaddle tipped him,he had dropped to 4/1 when you read that and in your usual fashion tried to nick the tip for yourself.

You don`t understand how betting works, that was a very small market yet you thought fortunes were staked on it.Stick to your fancy Asian markets they are all you have.

I'm not even going to answer that, you made a fool of yourself, probably the biggest fool ever. I'll listen to anybody about betting but people who talk about definite i tune out. If you had said i don't fancy JOB for reason x,y and z i would say fair enough. But to say he has no chance is idiot talk, i know i'm speaking to someone who does not understand how a betting market works. Everything has a chance you fail to grasp this, it rather simple, did they teach maths at school back when you were growing up?

Your low attention span kicking in again, you can`t even remember what was on a thread that you read thousands of time. Your inability to think for yourself is illustrated by your repeating of things i said about betting markets and not understanding them, just as a matter of interest do you ever lay or back on Betfair.
