Information post .  Just for the record .

Assuming the reports are correct , viz that Rory has/ had a "mild" bout of dengue fever ( pronounced den-ghi ) , a few facts for those happily unfamiliar with this affliction .

My son in law had a bad attack of it last February  , picked it up either locally ( Bali ) , or Thailand  ,  or Vietnam --he had been in all 3 places during the "incubation " period of a week or more .

Was sitting talking to us one morning ( not feeling well , unusually for him not to be at work ) , mid sentence he just keeled over , hitting the floor with a bang and sustaining a  hefty cut to his forehead . Straight to medical centre when he recovered sufficiently well to be taken there .

Fine red rash over most of his upper body , 28 toothaches , very sore joints  , spiking temperatures ( swimming pool visits needed ) , no energy , no appetite , no known cure .

Ill for upwards of a week  post his keeling over , imbibing various local cures from guava juice to pork soup , anything liquid basically . A  month before he was anything approaching his former energy level .

Took 2 months out of his working life I reckon  , the worst aspect of dengue is that there is no known cure , healthy people will recover , older / infirm people will die .

Comes via mosquito , if you are the next in line to be bitten and the person before you has dengue in any form you are getting it .  Nobody sat near our son in law for weeks unless he and they were smothered in anti mosquito protection and / or in a/c controlled environment where mosquitos did not go .

Playing golf or any form of physical activity with even a "mild " case of dengue is like a horse carrying 2 stone overweight , no performance possible . Finishing anywhere on the leaderboard represents a big effort .

Rory has I think pulled out of Thailand commitment this week , guarantee him that if he comes home he wont see any pesky mosquitos in Black Hugh's Quarter , its Baltic here .

No long term implications after recovery I am told  , but it marks your card for the future .

Cheers .

If he played he was ok, hate these excuses coming out after. No excuses is my motto

The excuse did not come out after, i heard about it early in the tournament when he was in 2nd place and very much in contention

First that story came to light was about last friday week, drifted from around 6 to 8 pre tournament this week on the strenght of the story

Had been  on a drip before he started playing last Thursday .  Reckon he had something wrong before he started , hence the drift from 6.4 to 8 before a ball was struck .

If it was anything similar to the dengue , the persons system would be up and down like a fiddlers elbow . Not saying it was the reason he did not win , but his performance was better than the pure finishing position indicated . Thats all . Luke deserved to be No 1 anyway , played well throughout the season  , even if he is majorless .
