Reverse Arkle quiz from 1982 onwards as I cannot go back any further.

I have tried to link the question but I did this quickly so there may be errors and spelling mistakes.

1. Which Irish jockey dropped his whip in a driving finish but still managed to edge out a son of Kemal that went on to win the Tingle Creek?
2. Who won the Arkle the year the great Sabin Du Loit was a beaten favourite?
3. Name the Darren Mercer owned Martin Pipe mare who started favourite for the race the year Arctic Kinsman was beaten into second in the race?
4. Name the Irish mare who beat the winner of the above race the previous year, to open the festival.
5. What is the connection between the beaten favourite of the race that the mare in the previous question won and an historic event that occurred in Eastern Europe in 1989?
6. Who was ante post favourite for the Arkle the year it was abandoned?
7. Who finished second to the answer to question 6 at the following year's festival?
8. Name the last beaten odds on favourite in the Arkle?
9. Name the Coral Cup winner in the same colours for Jimmy Fitzgearld?
10. Another Coral Cup winner that previously raced in the colours of 8&9 was controversially beaten in a Newmarket handicap when ridden by Kieren Fallon - Name the horse and the race?

Report Distant View December 11, 2011 12:08 AM GMT
Woody did indeed give Waterloo a sensational ride. Came home from school to see that Sondrio, Waterloo and Beech Road had won. A good year now to be doing the jackpot.

Q5 - Callisoe Bay was born in 1989.....
Report Distant View December 11, 2011 12:48 AM GMT
The Callisoe Bay answer is correct, although I never looked at his birth and it was not the historic significance.

The link was that he was owned by Rogers Waters, who was a founding member of Pink Flyod - The Wall was the historic event.

I am off now so question 9 was Trainglot.

Good work COM.

Great quiz.

Wildman is the answer to your Q5 Dunkirk in the 1965 King George.
Report wildmanfromborneo December 11, 2011 9:11 PM GMT
Correct Monte Christo.Dunkirk was a two mile chaser who took on Arkle in the 1965 King George,he was in the mould of Tingle Creek and Im A Driver,he fell fatally at the fourth last. The controversy started in the Sporting Life the next day when Dunkirks jockey Bill Rees said that Dunkirk was dead before he hit the ground and although he broke his neck he maintained his heart burst. It was alleged that Dunkirks lungs were full of blood, this led to a Sporting Life editorial saying it was cruel to race horses against Arkle as he broke the genuine horses hearts.
JayTrumpOldTom.Leap Frog and Flyingbolt correct.

Report wildmanfromborneo December 12, 2011 1:31 PM GMT
Well done The Gotchee all right except Aonach,a pity you don`t post more as you know your stuff.
Saval Beg was Arkles half brother and also named after a Scottish mountain but not the one required for Q1.
Q6.This was the sole cryptic clue and the hard one so fair play to The Gotchee,Willie Wagtail was second to Arkle in the 1963 Power Gold Cup.
Report moneypenny December 12, 2011 3:42 PM GMT
Q1- Ben Stack
Report wildmanfromborneo December 12, 2011 4:26 PM GMT
Moneypenny has answered the last question and not for the first time.
Ben Stack owned trained and ridden by those responsible for Arkle won the equivalent of The Arkle in 1963 and won the Two Mile Champion Chase in 1964 at the same festival Arkle won his first Gold Cup.
