Jessica Harrington's French import Mystic Desir looked home for all money between the last two hurdles in Naas today. Robbie Power looked behind as he cruised clear of the hard ridden duo of AKATARA +MIRADANE(long time leader who was legless). I had spotted LYREEN LEGEND creep into 4th but he too was hard ridden although starting to stay on. I felt if Power had kicked clear at this point it would have been race over. But he started to panic a tad just after the last and halfway up the run in the distress signals were out ! this four year old son of Ballingary had done something similar in Auteil last time over a 1/4 mile longer trip when having led he faded on the run in. Maybe he's a short runner who emptys quickly off the bridle, but so well did he travel here I felt it was a bad race to lose.
I'm amazed Robbie Power is her Stable Jockey,I think he's limited - I suppose if Barry Geraghty wasn't involved in The UK he'd be stable Number One. In my view outside of Walsh and Geraghty we are going through a period of mediocrity among Irish jockeys. For me Barry Geraghty is the best in the business with Ruby a close second and the rest miles off that pair ! Davy Russell rides lots of winners but is very limited in my view and can be a poor judge of pace. He's given a few right stinkers recently notably STONEMASTER in Punchestown midweek,he had him way off the pace on the tight inside track and gave the horse a very hard race after when he was never going to claw back the huge lead ofd Imperial Shabra+CROSS APPEAL(won). He was also poor in a 3year old Hurdle on SOLARAS EXHIBITION in Clonmel recently and was dire in Galway when he got beaten 3/4L on REBEL FITZ by EARLS QUARTER. In a race run at a crawl and on a proven stayer he got done for toe by waiting instead of sending him on 3 for home. The only one of these I backed by the way was STONEMASTER. I can see why Ferdie Murphy gave him his P 45. By the way I'll excuse him on FAR AWAY SO CLOSE as I think this horse is a pure rogue- Mind you he's the second jockey today who got beaten after looking over his shoulder on the run-in..No further comment required !
On the subject of Jessie Harrington her string are all runing as if they are needing a run. She's had quite a few horses tire late on in races .BURN AND TURN faded very quickly on Wednesday (hated the ground I'd say) THE ENGINEER went out like a light in Galway after shooting clear and JENARI wasn't match fit either jumped sloppily when mugged in the Galway opener last week.
For me the best jockey prospect riding here outside Walsh and Geraghty is young Bryan Cooper who is improving rapidly !
I think you're being kind to Russell on Far Away So Close (I didn't back it btw),he was sitting motionless after the last and waited until he was caught until riding the horse out.

Well as I say that's two pilots who turned victory into defeat today at Naas both acting the idiot looking around ! For once I'll give Davy Russell the benefit of the doubt as FARAWAY SO CLOSE has looked a thief in the past and doesn't always find much off the bridle. I couldn't back him today after his poor jumping in Limerick and he took a heavy fall too. But as you say he should have gone about his business. I only had one bet today I backed MYSTIC DESIR in the first race and felt hard done by. Robbie Power should have gone away when he was travelling so well instead of looking behind and siting motionless ! That was as bad a maiden hurdle as you'd see and I thought 15/8+7/4 was huge this morning. They sent off a Mare whose been beaten in a Kilbeggan Maiden hurdle as 2nd fav at 5/2 and you saw how slow she is. So MYSTIC DESIR will rarely find an easier opening ! I wonder if this horse has wind problems !

Ye as you say he's been to the festival twice FAR AWAY SO CLOSE..they had there doubts about him in the past going right handed but he did win in Punchestown one day and the suggestion that time that he used to hang right was due to a Tooth problem (now rectified)..But back left handed today he seemed to jump better he was often a sloppy jumper of his hurdles. Hes from the same familly as 2 mile champion Chaser NEWMILL,so he should always perhaps be ridden from the front in attacking mode !
He'll win a race !
P.S I see this forum still has guys who have NTO

Some good points from SB. I also backed the horse first thing this morning and thought he had many lbs in hand on his French form. I get the impression he is a bit of a short runner and was blowing very hard after by all accounts. I understand the horse has been very keen at home and they wanted to get him settled in behind and deliver him late. Not for the first time, i think Power showed terrible judgement in sending the horse on so far from home. Having made that decision he should have kept the horse up his work rather than looking to coast him. How some of these jockeys think they can roust a horse to deliver for a second time when challenged 100 yards from the line is beyond me.

DON COSSACK looked a serious horse in the Bumper..Gigginstown Horses really are dominant in National hunt races these days and they seenm to snap up every half decent horse. They are a breath of fresh air and a kinda life support machine for the game just now ! They are keeping many trainers in business. DON COSSACK was with Eddie Hales and looked a bit quirky before his debut in Punchestown last May when he played up at the start...
I gather he'll go hurdling next and you might see him in Navan in a few weeks time !

Yeah I'd say SPRING HEELED is pretty smart..Jim Culloty hasn't really taken off as a Trainer, but maybe he's coming into a bit of form now !
I fancy if they met again on good ground JENARI would reverse the form,I think on good ground and jumping better JENARI might make a smart horse. as always with JP's horses you're never sure if he's gona get them handicaped. Next run be interesting.JENARI will surely hurdle better on good ground,we might see him a different horse in the spring !

Hadrians Approach who beat Spring Heeled is at Nicky H now. He should be interesting over hurdles. Persona;;y i think Spring heeled could be a righht one

You could be right I'd say that was a fair race in DROMAHANE as the 4th Grandturgeon went on to win in Loughrea. Hopefully SPRING HEELED kicks on now as in the past some of Jim Culloty's have gone backwards..But he's had a fine season so far is 4 winners from 14 runners and is on an upward curve. That HADRIANS APPROACH I think was bought by Kelvin Hughes a big patron of nicky Henderson as you say !

Derek O'Connor had 6winners at Loughanmore today (AGAIN) He's ridden another six-timer to go with the one achieved lately at Dartfield when he rode home a sextet at Loughanmore today.

I know its not along the same lines..But congrats to CORK CITY who won the AIRTRICITY LEAGUE 1 TITLE beating Shelbourne(Who only needed a Draw Tonight) City struck in the 94th Minute Graham Cummins "PLAYER OF THE SEASON" the Hero scored to seal a superb season 2-1. City+Shels go up and Monaghanwill play Galway over 2 Legs for the 3rd Place in the Airtricity Premier Division. Monaghan will be 1/3 over the LEGS to Qualify.....

Far Away So Close a pure rogue?, I can't see where you came to that conclusion?, the horse has won 3 times and has had numerous placings, 2 of those wins the horse was headed and battled back to win by a neck one of those wins was the conditional jockeys h/cap hurdle at this years Aintree festival a very competitive race, not the stuff that rogues are made of!.
The only rogue is the jockey who usually rides the horse, I'm willing to forgive him for yesterday I'll put it down to been over confident?, check out the link below Far Away So Close at Navan and take a close look at the strangling right arm of the jockey between the last two flights and on the run in never once did he even dream of picking up his stick, it stank to high heavens, no surprise really when you consider the jockey involved?.
As for Robbie Power? done nothing wrong, no law against looking around when cantering clear, the impression I got if he kicked sooner he would have been beaten even further, the winner actually won with a bit in hand so legless was Powers mount.

Mystic deer let me down for good few quid as i had him trebled with Qwenga Star and Ten Bob . To me he was one of two things 1) either wasn t fully fit on its first run for Jessie or 2) has a seriuos wind problem as it looked to me as it stopped straight after coming off the bridle after the last .
Having read what Stanford ( who s an excellent judge )said about having done something similar at Auteil on its previuos run you d have to think its the latter which is a pity as regardless of how average a maiden hurdle it might have been he jumped and travelled like a good one through the whole race

Great opening post Stamford. You only have to look at Power last season when he blew more than one race at the last. I'd add Eddie O'Connell to your list of prospects, really impressed me last season.

FAO SILVERGREASER ...That maiden hurdle in Navan you refer to with FAR AWAY SO CLOSE just before Christmas at Navan back in 2009..Well on the day the Jollies flip flopped as FAR AWAY SO CLOSE was friendless 13/8 out to 9/4 + on betfair and HOLLO LADIES was backed into 7/4 from 7/2 in the morning. All the right people were on the Winner that day..Like you at the time my first reaction was that FAR AWAY SO CLOSE got a suspicious ride.. But I was alerted after to watch the head on of the race and while its not visible from the side angle,FAR AWAY SO CLOSE lugged and hung all the way up the straight and gave Russell a very hard awkward ride. He disappointed badly after that in Thurles behind a pair of dead Heaters (including the dog COLLEONI). He bottled it as well in a Killarney maiden hurdle when he faced modest types. The penny finally dropped when they tried front running tactics in Tipperary and he made all in division one of the two mile maiden hurdle for his most impressive victory to date. He followed up in Punchestown after (just about).
He lost his way afterwards but as you say credit him,he did battle in Aintree..But I still feel he's not 100% straightforward. He travels well, but over hurdles he often missed out the odd hurdle and his jumping of fences in Limerick was poor. There remains a suspicion he's best going left handed. I think he jumped much better on Saturday in Naas and i believe he will win a beginners chase if they continue to ride him from the front. I believe he wants a flat left handed track like Tipperary or Listowel to bring out his strengths which is once he settles in front he can travel supremely well and provided he jumps like he did in Naas he'll win a beginners chase. Uphill finishes don't play to his strenghts as he doesn't find too much in a real war (despite his Aintree win( again on a Flat left handed track)
He's a rogue but most rogues have talent... e.g George Best,Ronnie O'Sullivan,Balotelli,Tevez,Paul Galvin........

P.S Paul Nolan thought FAR AWAY SO CLOSE had an issue with going right-handed after he hung badly at Thurles in that maiden he finished behind the dead heaters in 3rd .However he had a tooth problem at the time and they put it down to that !
I still think left handed flat track is is his perfect match. He handles all types of ground !

Have to agree with Stamford B. He could yet win a good 2m hcap chase yet, again maybe Aintree or Ayr,although id say not on heavy. Some of those Norwich's are a bit cracked.

Have to agree with the point how Power is Harrington's stable jockey. He gets the ride on so many good horses down in Commonstown yet he messes up so many times. He thinks he's riding machines 24/7 and even the ride he gave Steps To Freedom at Punchestown was poor, nearly put the horse on the ground twice and only the horse has so much class, he managed to get him out of trouble and win. I blame him for Oscar Wells getting beaten at Cheltenham last March too. I think Power has cost Jesse a couple of more Grade 1's and he'll continue to do so as long as she perseveres with him. Geraghty is five times the jockey he is!

Jessica Harrington clearly has horses under-cooked,all of her horses returning after a summer break seem to be tiring visibly and blowing up. She hasn't had a winner for 23 days and has had 32 runners in the interim. In fact her last winner was STEPS TO FREEDOM in Punchestown and of course he'd been on the go all summer.. So she's clearly aiming to have her horses come right heading into the Fairyhouse/Royal Bond Meeting.
I suppose it is a long year !

You can add PLAY THE MARKET 3rd in the Down Royal bumper as another Harrington horse who travelled well but emptied quickly and clearly needed the run badly. Mind you his head carriage was akward and I wouldn't be rushing to back him at a short price. The winner looks a decent horse ..The old theory back Noel Meade in October/November bears fruit year in year out ! How strong the race was is debatable,I don't think MONKSLAND would have beaten WHATS HAPPENING in that Ballysteen point to point when he ran out. We've since seen WHATS HAPPENING run a fair 4th to the potential star Ipsos Du Berlais in a hot Galway bumper !
