I watched incredulously the sports section attached to the 9.00 p.m. news. Not a mention of Irish racing's marvellously successful day at Newmarket -with Irish trainers landing first and second in one Gr.1 ... first and third in another...with a Gr.2 winner thrown in for good measure. More international success at one of our specialities and ignored as if people were ashamed of it . I'll have to write in to complain and would urge other forumites to do likewise . This nonsensical farce of a service cannot be tolerated without protest .
They flew through the soccer report on Robbie Keane's injury, too.
Their website has been painful to navigate the last number of weeks; it's like death by Rugby-spam.
A part of me is glad the egg-chasers got chinned this morning, so the Rugby love-in will [temporarily?] come to an end.
PS Having a presenter who defrauded a bookmaker of 3k's worth of credit is licence money well-spent...

Horse racing is the only sport where we are world leaders yet the coverage given is dreadful. The cities may be different but in the country nearly everyone has an interest yet they barely give a racing result. Many years ago before teletext and mobile phones i used to listen to the radio for evening Irish racing results,i used to endure items about a player being fit with the immortal rider "if selected" before the last item came, the racing results. So it was always the case.

wildman you are correct ...racing always on the backburner ....its a pity they neglect the one thing we are really good at....its much the same in the cities as the country ....lots of people in the cities love a bet ...they mightn't have the same hands on approach but the trill is still the same....

I will also send a letter to Horse Racing Ireland among whose missions is 'the promotion of the horse racing industry'. Keeping quiet about the major successes of this industry doesn't sound much like promotion to me so HRI should certainly be keen to contact RTE about its manifest failure in this department . The pall of mediocrity that hangs over almost everything in this country drives me to despair.

Some people in here will have seen my posts in here as regards my pure anger at the absolute EMBARRASSMENT of a 'sports service' provided by RTE TV main evening news.
It's a pure and I'm right here trying to avoid typing expletives to point out the rubbishy and I'm only stopping myself typing in expletives....
The night during last August the main sports story, the bleedin' main sports story, was that some guy was omitted from the Irish rugby team to play Scotland in a friendly, (not a competitive game), the next story was Ladies Day at the RDS and the third story was an interview withe the Chief DeEquipe of the Irish Nations Cup team, that was the third story.
Let me tell you now and fill you in on what was going on that evening: there were not one but two (2) Aertricity League teams playing European games; the games or the results were NOT even mentioned. It's a black joke and we're paying Euro160 per household for this.

RTE certainly has questions to answer. But in the present times will anyone question their pre-meditated attempt to destroy the life of the innocent man in Ahascragh.Co.Galway?

Lets be honest if Alex ex Hammond wasn't blonde and good looking horse racing would never get a look in on sky sports, RTE give horse racing more coverage than it really deserves for a minority sport?.

Horseracing isn't popular outside the big meets, a lot of the population wouldn't know who Aidan O'Brien his never mind be concerned that he trained a few winners at Newmarket.

I think a few people are missing the essential points here. RTE is a PUBLICLY FUNDED NATIONAL BROADCASTER. Its various sections have a DUTY to report on significant happenings in their areas . Popularity has nothing to do with it e;g; an achievement by an Irish author or scientist will be reported ( rightly) even if few people 'follow' literature or science.
As to squig's post above -isn't that the issue ...if ''a lot of the population wouldn't know who Aidan O'Brien is' -isn't that precisely because news about his major international achievements are frequently suppressed by RTE ? The whole thing makes no sense -it can only be due to carelessness , negligence or ignorance and these are poor characteristics for any national body to exemplify. Racing fans should make their views known about this carry-on which is a dereliction of duty by RTE as well as an insult to the whole racing community. If we tolerate mediocrity -mediocrity is most assuredly what we'll get.

If you go by head of population when compared with Britain Aiden O'Brien would qualify as a minor celibrity on our tiny Island, in Britain outside of racing circles Henry Cecil would be a virtual nobody, Henry who?.
I think RTE are pretty decent at giving racing airtime, maybe vubiant the rugby world cup shattering defeat was always going to overshadow everything else making saturday's sports news a mere blib than anything deliberate on RTE's behalf.

Yeah -typical isn't it ...a defeat gets the lion's share of the headlines while a high quality winning performance is ignored. Incidentally squig's reference above to 'winning a few races at Newmarket' is surely unjustifiably dismissive . Winning two Gr.1 races and a Gr.2 against the best of British competition and bagging almost a half million euro is hardly a minor achievement.

I cant agree with the posters who say racing is a minority sport,ye are judging it on attendances alone but in my expierience nearly everybody has an interest in horses, especially in rural areas. Vubiant i agree entirely with your sentiments and the Newmarket races were all top class.

Vubiant Rugby is king at RTE nothing can stand in the way of their precious rugby, Fred Cogley a rugby nut was head of RTE sport for donkeys years, the current head Ryle Nugent was RTE's former rugby executive editor, racing never stood a chance on saturday. Donnybrook was in deep mourning on Saturday.

RTE gives more than its share of coverage to the racing that appeals to the masses, namely National Hunt. When the Cheltenham festival is approaching they do very interesting previews and interviews with trainers ,often small ones and they give insights into what a Cheltenham victory would mean to certain individuals and their families. They did an interview with Tom Foley the year he won with Danoli which was a marvellous effort on their behalf, portraying a rural farmer with a once in a lifetime horse, owned by an ordinary man, trained by another one with help from members of his family.Mr pioneer pin having a winner at Newmarket is hardly riveting news,he's done it many times before.Owned by Tabor,Magnier,Smith, all multi millionaires who have nothing in common with anything Irish. Most Irish people would have no allegiance whatsoever to these people, why should they ?,or for O Brien and his clique either for that matter.Nobody cares about O Brien and his so called achievements,if the truth be told many racegoers as well as the ordinary public would be secretly hoping he never trains a winner anywhere. And his achievements amount to winning a few million prize money each year with about 100 million worth of stock at his disposal, hardly earth shattering stuff.Irish people care very little about flat racing and rightly so,its most certainly the sport of kings over here. The flat scenes main players are a motley bunch.Tabor,Magnier,Smith,O Brien,Weld,Lyons,Murtagh,McDonagh,Heffernan,Bolger,Manning,Harrington,Berry,... real nice people among that list,i cant wait until one of them have a winner again.

mincer11 -you may have missed the interesting detail that Jim Bolger -one of your arbitrary set of 'nice people' -had one of the Gr.1 winners on Saturday -the bigger of the two The Dewhurst Stakes worth about E210.000 to the winner -a long-standing 2-y-o premium race and a predictor of Classic success . I don't understand your point about O'Brien having had so much success before that any further additions are hardly worth noticing . Successful achievement is always worthy and the more so as it accumulates . Are Manchester Utd.'s Premiership wins less meritorious because they have won it so many times previously. ? Incidentally nice Jim Bolger has now won the Dewhurst four times in about 6 years - a fantastic tally indeed. The fourth win , far from being of lesser value or attention actually adds lustre to the record.
I would appeal to you to shake off your absurd begrudging attitude to the genius that is Aidan O'Brien -take a fresh look and celebrate Irish success .

Aidan O'Brien wins G1's most weekend's during the summer, what makes this one so much better, winning two Group ones and collecting €1/2 million is pocket change to Coolmore in the grand scheme of things. If SYT had won the Arc last week it would have made the six one news easily.
Few people would list racing in their top 3 favorite sports and people confuse an interest in gambling with actual interest in horse racing, outside the big festivals this interest isn't there. RTE have a few minutes on sport every day they have to cater to what the public are most interested in.
Our boxers are similarly successful and they get less coverage from RTE sport over the course of the year. Boxing would have every bit as much appeal to people if not more then horse racing.
