I was in a Ladbrokes in Derry, so they are there.
Report Temlett October 2, 2011 9:43 PM BST
Ladbrokes
Toals
McLeans
Sean Graham

They would be the main ones. There may be some others chains such as Crown in Belfast but the top 4 would be the main ones as far as I know.

In Derry Ladbrokes (bought out W Duffy), McCleans (bought out B Duffy), 1 S Graham shop. Rarely use them, as they are full of Jonah's who tell you they're 50p ew trebles when your doing your bollo cks in.Laugh. I Prefer to do my nuts now online.Laugh

the last time i was up around belfast i passed one of barney eastwood's shops

massive place

Sold out to Ladcrokes , freddiek , 135 million reportedly ( for 48 shops I think ).  Saw him the day the news broke in his shop on the Ormeau Road ( not in his head office , but where it started to take off for him ) , big grin on his face , why not , more power to his elbow . Got out at the right time in my opinion .  Limited the betting opportunities here subsequently , complete change of mood and opportunity , that shop , large as it is , is a bit like the Marie Celeste now any time I drop in .

I was not aware that PP had shops in Belfast or Northern Ireland. I had heard they had plans to open shops up there, but did not know that this had already started.

How many does the estate number?
Report mightymoyes October 3, 2011 9:56 PM BST
PP bought all the McGranaghans bookies.

Boyles also operate "up north" albeit through another relative

How could anyone omit the Hughes empire from northern bookmakers lists??                                                                                 Barney-BAR ONE-no longer has any shops in the north-afaik
Report Kelly October 3, 2011 10:34 PM BST
Yes , Norn Iron , heard something along those lines .  Makes it an even better deal probably , although you wouldn't tell your bank manager you were in property these days .

Temlett , think there were about 7 or 8 , not sure  , they had 3 in the middle of Belfast and the rest were in West Belfast from memory . None in East or South Belfast as far as I knew , might have also been one in North Belfast out at Glengormley .

Betting in N I used to be the best in the whole of these islands in terms of guys who would take a position and lay your fancy . All gone  , Grahams used to lay anything when Sean was alive ( except each way , he hated each way ) but I think its a bit different now . Ask B C .
Report Kelly October 3, 2011 10:36 PM BST
Hughes operate South Down etc , never been in one of their shops .  Good on course I believe , but am seldom on course nowadays myself .
Report 1.01's no fun October 3, 2011 10:44 PM BST
PP took over 8 mcgranaghans hence the link http://www.finfacts.ie/irishfinancenews/article_1013717.shtml

Hughes represented in Down,Armagh+Tyrone? as well as on course-
Report Kelly October 3, 2011 10:45 PM BST
Freddiek , think it was about 3 years ago or slightly less . Can find out if its relevant , one of my friends was fairly senior in that organisation but got retired  when Ladcrokes took over .
Report mightymoyes October 3, 2011 11:25 PM BST
any chance of them ever opening on a sunday or religious whack-jobs still too much say in how other people live?
Report Kelly October 4, 2011 12:17 AM BST
There was pressure being brought on the politicos about 5 years ago to try for Sunday opening .  Think it was being driven by the then local bookies , but most of them have sold out to the chains since and I suspect the issue is on a back burner .

Little demand for Sunday opening at the moment except maybe by the FOBT driven bookies who would like a 24 hour licence .  Most of the shops are only busy ( relatively) on a Saturday for football coupons and good cards in racing .  Nothing like it used to be , can remember queues OUTSIDE some shops back in the good old days on big race days .

Does Shaun Lynch still work for Ladbrokes, he joined them from Eastwoods in the takeover

"Sold out to Ladcrokes , freddiek , 135 million reportedly ( for 48 shops I think )." Thats the guts of 3 million per shop. What planet do you live on?
Report thegalwayman October 4, 2011 3:30 PM BST
It was 54 shops and £135m was indeed the price.
Report ericthered7 October 4, 2011 4:01 PM BST
Not quite. £117 milion for the shops plus the phone betting business.
http://www.independent.ie/business/irish/thank-you-very-much-says-mr-eastwood-for-8364160m-deal-1284935.html
Still, sounds like a good days business for Mr Eastwood!
Report Kelly October 4, 2011 4:28 PM BST
Eric , its more like what planet does the buyer live on .  My figure came from a widely reported media source , might have been some subsequent horse dealing re premises , leases , phone business , etc .  Not far off the mark anyway . An offer you could not refuse if you go to mafia speak .  Good luck to him , better the money operating loosely within the Irish economy than dealing with potentates from somewhere in the Arab set ups for instance .
