South Africa played Samoa this morning. If Samoa had gotten even a point they would have been ahead of Wales, with Wales having 1 match left, admittedly against Fiji but still

So ideally, from a Welsh perspective, best case scenario is if Samoa got nothing out of todays game, not even a bonus point, which means Wales can afford to lose to Fiji & still qualify for the 1/4 finals

So the IRB appoint a WELSH referee to the South Africa vs Samoa game!
Report dinglemick September 30, 2011 12:47 PM BST
This has defo been the group of death with South Afica , Wales and Samoa .....All three would deserve to be in the quater finals .......you d feel for samoa missing out .....i think they left it behind them  against wales and put up a very brave fight this morning after a bad start going 13-0 down losing 13 - 5 in the end ....... then again the welsh would feel they left the south africa game behind them ...... close calls in the end ....... not saying that i think wales would be easy for ireland if they get through Italy Sunday but i defo think they would much prefer to play wales than samoa ....

Listening to the guys in the RTE studio the general consensus was that Wales ripped up the form book?, I for one was petrified of meeting Wales, couldn't see where the form book was been ripped up? two very closely matched teams coming into todays game.
Wales might not have beaten S.Africa but they should have, dominating the game, arguably a performance on a par with Irelands victory over the Aussies.
I seem to remember Wales beating us a few months ago in the 6 nations albeit a controversial try, more a technicality than actual cheating.
There seemed to be unanimous joy allover the country when it became obvious after the Australian victory we would almost certainly be meeting Wales instead of Southern hemisphere opponent for a place in the Semi's, cue book your hotel rooms its just a formality, Ireland would never have a better opportunity to make the last four a stepping stone to the final proper.
Wales beat us today and you'd swear it was one of the biggest shocks in Rugby World Cup history, the over confidence on the build up to todays game was so strong from the man on the street right through virtually the whole media circus you could almost reach out and touch it, even the players seemed quitely confident when interviewed.
One thing about this little country of ours we really do love to build ourselves up for a fall, here is one individual who kept his feet firmly on the ground, so much easier to deal with the blow when you afford your opponents the respect that they deserve.

ShockedShockedJust watched the highlights programme on todays game .... I thought Brent Popes analysis was an embarresment ...... I m not into the blame game for todays defeat but he once again showed his love in he has for all things Leinster , so much so that he blames O Gara for Mike Phillips try and keith earls for the last try ....... Now we all know that he fancies the arse off gordan darcy and would only love to give him one if he could but to blame o gara for what was clearly darcys mistake ShockedShocked......i have great admiration for darcy battled back from having an operation in the summer and played well through the tournamnet considering the injuries he was carrying  so i m not having a go at him .....and how he blames earls for the last try when the first rule for a winger at any level is to always stay out and don t come in , in defence .....according to pope no fault of healy , kearney or reddan ShockedShocked....I know he comes accross as a nice fella but to me he s a bluffer

and just to clarify for any viewers out there ( because he was name dropping again talking to his former all black colleagues during the week  ) ......BRENT POPE NEVER PLAYED FOR NEW ZEALAND .....

Anyway we can go on about o gara underperforming and the other things that went wrong but as i said i don t want to get into the blame game . I just felt it was disapointing we couldn t kick on when we got back to 10 all ....

Not with a man down..........
Report mincer11 October 15, 2011 10:23 AM BST
No matter what the result, every attempt should be made by the officials to keep 30 players on the field.Very hard to win any game with a man less, particularly when the teams are evenly matched.

Ref obviously changed the course if the game .  Strange .

In my view, It was the player that decided to make an illegal takle which by the application of the rules as they stand was a sending off offence.
I then saw a 14 man team dominate a 15 man team, but missed two school boy kicks, and turned down 2 drop goal attempts, one almost under the posts, the other after over 20 phases when time was up and at the end of which lost the ball..where an attmept on either could have won the game ....not sure any of these events were linked to the sending off...

The Aus and Wales 3rd place match will prob be the game to watch next weekend cuz NZ will absolutely rip France a new one!
Report dinglemick October 16, 2011 2:00 PM BST
and so its New Zealand / France in the final .....i predicted at the start that France would get far but considering the way they have played 80% of the time its nothing short of a miracle .........
Going on all evedence in the tournament there can be only one winner and the early prices sum it up ......new zealand as short as 1/8 france 13/2 ......handicap 16 .......but finals are finals so you never know ..New Zealand will win bar there customery world cup choke .......One thing though which might lead me to back France +16 is the kicking .....Para and Yachvilli have probably been the two best kickers in the tournament so they may be able to keep france ticking over on the scoreboard while the only problem area for New Zealand may be goalkicking ...they missed a good few handy ones again today and tried a few different kickers
