It was during the 1960s that man began to relise that a drug is not necessarily something that cures diseases. He discovered that an increasingly wide range of drugs were being used, particularly by young people,as a means of gaining new experiences. However people in sport were aware of drugs way before this.Horse racing knew of drugs well over 100 years ago, narcotics and strychnine being used this led to the introduction of saliva tests.Cycling and drugs go hand in hand since the first Tour De France,Tommy Simpson was full of amphetamines when he died on the slopes of Mont Ventoux in 1967.Both Snooker and Motor racing learnt from second world war bomber pilots that alertness is vital,Snooker also used beta blockers to stop hands shaking.Athletics use all sorts of drugs, anabolic steroids add weight and strength EPO adds endurance.
The East Germans institutionalised doping in athletics and swimming from the early seventies on yet some on here believe that others competed against them with success while clean.
Man has learnt that he can with drugs control his moods, many of his basic activities even his intelligence,it is ludicrous to think that sport can be chemically pure.

Always thought the Juventus scandal was more about match fixing than drugs so delighted to be informed of the truth. In 1964 five players from Bologna, then leading seria A,all gave positive results for amphetamine, first they were docked points and finally they were reinstated making them champions after the Italian authorities fudged the issue....somethings never change.

F ucking moderators. You make a fair and fact proven point and it gets removed. I talked about Moggi (the devil) DevilDevilDevil before and it got removed. He must control everything. Why can you not talk about something that is proven to be true in court ConfusedConfusedPlain

You appear to know a lot about drugs in sport.
Maybe you can give us a rundown of the recreational ones you appear to be still taking!

You just can't help yourself can you?

Personally I feel that persistently dodging drug testers and/or tampering with drug samples is just as bad as testing positive and taints any achievements earned in an athlete's particular sport throughout their lifetime, especially those which followed an unprecedented improvement in performance!

Hypothetically speaking of course!

Do you really think that all the American athletes and swimmers of the nineties were drug free.
Report db1974 June 21, 2011 1:22 PM BST
Honestly, I don't know.

Some I believe were clean (eg Carl Lewis*) and some I believe weren't (eg Flo Jo)

When somebody smashes a record (eg Flo Jo) it's hard not to be sceptical but when someone barely does it (eg Carl Lewis) it seems more likely that they were clean

I do know though that if you start going down the road of pointing the finger at every athlete who achieves something special then you are going down a very slippery slope.

Personally if an athlete's drugs record is clean throughout their career, then I'm happy enough with that but if they have one drug violation then it's hard for me to accept what they have achieved in their careers

At the end of the day I don't give a rats about Janet Evans. I mean, she didn't even make the bloody final of the Olympics that year and was sounding off about Michelle Smith more in frustration than anything else - it's not Michelle Smith's fault that Janet Evans didn't make the final.

However, as far as Janet Evans goes, I cannot find any link to ANY drug violations AT ALL in her career or any link to BALCO either so I do get annoyed when (on the face of it) innocent athletes are tarred with the same brush as not-so-clean ones.

*: I am aware that Carl Lewis failed 3 drugs tests back in the 80's but his excuse re inadvertent use because the substances were also found in cold medicine was accepted by the US Olympic Committee

Greece's lady (i use the term loosely) athletes, are super duper clean..
Report wildmanfromborneo June 21, 2011 1:31 PM BST
DB1974..I thought Carl Lewis failed a drug test in the nineties and it was hushed up,i also thought he was on the BALCO list but am not sure but i do remember reading that all the runners in the infamous Seoul 100 metres final had subsequently failed drug tests.

According to this Guardian article here

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2003/
apr/24/athletics.duncanmackay

Lewis, along with "hundreds" of American athletes, were allowed to escape bans following failed drug tests between 1988-2000

Lewis' response was basically along the lines of "so what?"

I don't know what to think anymore

When i was young i greatly admired the Australian runner Herb Elliot,he was never beaten in a competitive mile race, but was saddened to learn much later that is training regime was so severe that he used drugs to sustain it.
