Niland progresses at US Open qualifiers

Wednesday, 24 August 2011 12:54
Conor Niland recorded a comfortable straight-sets victory against Pavol Cervenak on the opening day of the US Open qualifying tournament in Flushing Meadows.

Niland, currently ranked 199 in the world, cruised past Cervenak 6-1 6-4 to set up a second round encounter against Chinese Taipei's Tsung-Hua Yang.

The Irish number one, who reached the first round at Wimbledon this year, is now just two matches away from a second appearance in the main draw of a grand slam event.

Meanwhile, Louk Sorensen, who briefly called time on his career earlier this year, faces Spain's Arnau Brugues-Davi in his first round qualifier later today.

Sorensen has been blighted by injuries in recent seasons and has seen his ATP ranking plummet from a career high of 213 to 614, but the man from Stuttgart will have been buoyed by a number of encouraging results since his return to the tour.

if sorensen were to get through to the last round, and i think he has a more than decent chance, he would have to play the winner of Guez/Fischer which would be a tough ask for him

still its good to see him back, he actually retired at one point through injury but decided to give the sport another crack

Niland is already in the last round and should be well able for Middlekoop, fingers crossed

would be great if we got the 2 lads in the main draw and Murray the only Brit!

7-6 6-1. Fantastic achievement for a player who retired less than a year ago.
Big possibility one or both could play Djokovic, Berdych or Soderling.
Fingers crossed. Delighted for them.
Hopefully the start of something bigger here for one of the greatest sports around. Blush
