he only barely lost in the last qualifying round of queens last week, if he had won that he would have been playing nadal
![]() ![]() gud luck to him hope he gets through |

Almost true dddddew.
He would have been into the first round against Devarmaan. The winner played Nadal in rd. 2. |
|
By:
He won 8-6 in the 3rd set in the 1st Qualifying round.
His opponent is actually Croatian not Serbian. He had a good run in the recent Zagreb Challenger on clay but other than that there's nothing to suggest he's much use. Would be great if he reached the 1st round. Also it's worth noting that James McGee has qualified for the main draw of a Challenger Event for the first time. He got through the rounds in Milan qualifying and won his 1st round match. He plays Benjamin Balleret of Monaco in the 2nd round tomorrow. |

Correct about his nationality but I copied that from the Times website JJ.
The RTE one was also wrong! It said Niland had won the 2nd set on a tie break. 7-5! |
|
By:
he got beaten in the last round of the Australian Open qualies in 2010
Louk Sorensen qualified that year He deserves it; he put in a lot of work last year and reached #120ish in the rankings This guy is more of a clay courter I think so I fancy Niland to win it. Bookies have him about 1.44 |

No worries GS - it was obvious that you'd just taken that from some other report!
It was raining pretty much all of yesterday so he's due to play in half an hour or so after the final set of a women's qualifying match. The draw has just been made but it has just been Player X v Qualifier/Lucky Loser so it's hard to know exactly who he'll play if he wins. |

Match just started - Niland broke in the first game and held serve for 2-0

Dont be silly dingle, Murray is a jock, very possible one of your own. Of course the English will claim him should he win or reach the final but he clearly hates the English like the rest of the world ![]() |

Great stuff from Conor
Qualifiers not yet allocated to draw - best seed he could get is Roddick (#8) or one qualifier could play Federer in the 2nd round if they won their opener |

@conorniland1 Conor Niland
Thanks everyone so much for your messages and support this week! Such a great feeling and Ireland deserves someone to cheer on in Wimbledon! some tennis journo just tweeted that he is to play Adrian Mannarino, the world no 53 in the first round. They never played before, Conor is ranked 184, his best was 129 Mannarino has only ever been past the first round in a Grand Slam twice difficult match sure, but not impossible |

if he wins that he plays Federer next lol

Irish tennis star Conor Niland has the glittering prize of a potential Wimbledon match-up with Roger Federer if the Irish number one overcomes the tough challenge of France’s Adrian Mannarino in the first round of the Championships which commences tomorrow.
Niland will play Mannarino, the world number 53, on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Frenchman has made only one appearance at Wimbledon, losing in the first round in 2009 but his solid form this year has seen his ranking progress steadily towards the world’s top 50. Niland, Ireland’s first competitor in the main draw of the Men’s Championship since 1984, has a current ranking of 184. If Niland succeeds on Tuesday he will play Federer if, as expected, the six-times former champion defeats Mikhail Kukushkin in his first round match. |

Tough task today but not insurmountable.
Without being cliched, French players are generally very talented but mentally suspect under pressure. This guy is good but no superstar. Niland lost 2-1 to him in their only previous meeting on a hardcourt. I dont see why he can`t take a set today and go from there. I`m hoping Nilands countless Davis cup 5 set experience will stand him well today. Do yourself proud. |
