I think this is very much welcomed by most fair minded GAA people. It's great to see and i think SINDO would want to have a good think about things before calling it a crisis. These players train like demons they make millions upon millions for the organisation, surely it is only fair that these players are paid? They give it so much and i think it is only fair. Please let this be the future and hopefully it can improve the standards as well.

Non-story - no sources named, so could be all made-up for all we know.

I'd say there is an element of truth to the stories but its just a few players not exactly widespread to become a cancer on the game, better off investigating the huge payments been made to many inter county and some club managers and mentors.
Now that would be a good expose for investigative journalism if they could infiltrate the GAA code of silence, I don't mind managers been paid a certain amount but some of the rumoured payments are obscene considering the demands they ask of players there's something very hypocritical about it all?.

agree the rumours of some inter county managers been handed massive pay checks are obscene. would love to see more to this, could see the topic rising this week. a response from the Grab All Association will be interesting.

surely county's paying managers would have to  declare same for tax purposes ..would it not be available under the freedom of information act ....  no need to investigate ..cant see the gaa leaving themselves open to this kind of thing ....

This is more or less a thing of the past, certainly at club level. It usually involved a local developer or auctioneer etc stumping up the cash (all done under the counter) to bring in a high profile outside manager or player for a period.I would be interested to hear what the corrupt GPA have to say about this.I know of one high profile GPA member who when coaching his own club, engaged in the same practice,he brought in a high profile current inter county manager in an attempt to win a County senior hurling title in Cork, which failed as it happens..!

Far from a thing of the past scooby its still as prevalent today as it was 20 year ago when it first reared its ugly head, I know for a fact my own club have been paying managers a lot more than the legal official expenses that are accrued.

But they should be entitled to something, maybe 25% of the gate money after all people want to see the stars of the GAA not a bunch of old codgers in suits on a committee !!!!

The whole GAA set up is in the dark ages, no changes can be made until congress comes around every 5 year?.

Reading between the lines there does seem to be a lot of support in the media for some sort of legitimate payment to be brought in for inter county managers, Eugene Magee apart of course.
I can't see how this would have any effect on stopping illegal payments because there's no way in hell the GAA could come up with anywhere near what some of these managers are already recieving or have recieved, in fact it could make things even worse?, the manager pockets the GAA's legitimate cheque while at the same time still continue to recieve the underhand payments from whatever sources within their county of choice.
Anyway by legitimising payments to managers would just open up a hornets nest and the GPA would be allover it like a rash, and quite righty too, as its these well paid managers who put professional like demands on these players both physically and mentally, as long as they remain in the championship you can forget about having any semplance of a social ife, even playing with your club your social ife is severely curtailed, its not like say the 60's, 70's and 80's where you trained about twice a week, usually consisting of a few laps and a kickaround and then off to the local for a few pints to quench your thirst.
Nowadays if a club or county player was spotted in a pub a fortnight before a big game he would be probably bundled into a park vanned with tinted glass windows such is stigma attached almost on a par with injecting yourself with heroin.
The GPA's heart is in the right place but legitimising any sort of payments other than the usual expenses and disturbance money can never be done on a fair basis, say if they get a pay per play allowance the likes of the Corks, Kerrys, Kilkennys etc would recieve an awful lot more because the stronger counties usually get an extended run of things, many good players who play for a weaker county would be short changed even though ability wise they are on a par with many players from the stronger counties.
Don't the GPA get some sort of sports grant off the goverment as it stands for player welfare?, obviously not as much as they would like because of goverment cut backs.

If the likes of Duffy is serious about getting to the bottom of these illegal payments, well lets have some action, he's complaining about been obstructed at every turn, well if that is the case?, well then involve the legal authorities and the revenue commissioners soon have them running for the hills, we're not dealing with the mafia here for heavens sake, even their so called unbreakable code of silence omerta has been infiltrated numerous times, informers everywhere.

The nest should`ve been opened long, long ago. This organisation are a law onto themselves, with hand-picked rules of a draconian nature!Money is now everything and the sport is secondary but only for the bigwigs and not the players.A blind eye will be turned to any financial gain as long as you`re not dipping your hand in the pot that`s on the main table

Did accounts once (as a junior) where I knew the manager was being paid but there wasn't even a sniff of it in the accounts. Those clubs have a lot of cash floating around and plenty of willing donors.
Nothing to do with auditors, its up to the revenue but what can they do?
Report silvergreaser June 14, 2011 8:14 AM BST
Aren't these revenue guys auditors in their own right Tavaris?.

Maybe these managers have swelled bank accounts where a simple means test of what they earned through legitimate employment can be offset against other lodgements, transactions or investments?.

Then again if they get a whiff of an internal investigation they'd be rushing to cover their tracks, I'm sure many of them are in a comfort zone and think they're untouchable, the GAA one of Irelands great institutions, the all conquering Catholic church thought the same now its only a bit player in Irish society the respect and control they once monopolised has been well and truely shot to pieces.

Nobody should be above the law, as I've said I don't particulary mind managers getting a little something but some of the payments that many of them shamelessly demand can only be described as pure and utter greed, these managers are actually professionals in all but name, because they're earning more annually from just managing a GAA team than the vast majority of blue and some white collared workers in this country, that of course on top of their often well paid jobs or business ventures.

silvergreaser you make a lot of good points.but pure and utter greed?a guy has expertise in a field.he sells his time and gets paid for it.like every other job!..my prob would be the underhandedness of it.the failure of the gaa to adress and embrace this...i know managers getting paid now...and as far back as the early 80s...so its not a new thing..
