THE FORMER MINISTER for Finance Brian Lenihan has died.

He died in the early hours of this morning. He was 52. A full statement is expected at 11am this morning.

Sources close to the Dublin West TD confirmed to TheJournal.ie, that Lenihan – who had been suffering from pancreatic cancer – died at his home in west Dublin with his family by his side.

Lenihan had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for the past 18 months but had continued to work as a TD and as Minister for Finance in the last government. He played a key role in negotiating the EU/IMF bailout last November.

He had previously served as the Minister for Justice and as the Minister for Children in previous Fianna Fáil administrations.

Since exiting government in March he had continued to act as Fianna Fáil’s finance spokesperson

He looked awful for months and with hindsight he probably should have given up his duties.
In fairness to him, he obviously thought it was far too important to walk away from the task in hand, and that was to his great credit.
RIP

May he rest in peace.......should have given up his Ministerial role when he was clearly deteriorating so much.....will be remembered for the disastrous BANK guarantee.....unfortunately....

Front running mare.....Brian Lenihan didn`t bring the country to it`s knees
Report Vubiant June 10, 2011 12:39 PM BST
RodneyHutchingsJNR - AD did not say that .
He made a different point altogether which is even now being made on Newstalk radio ...and an ex-FF TD has agreed.

You're not very bright are you ...probably a FF voter ?
Report Anaglogs Daughter June 10, 2011 12:40 PM BST
I never said he did but as sure as gun is iron THAT is what he'll be remembered for.

In that case,Vubiant.Instead of nominating himself as a spokesman for others,he should let them, perhaps, speak for themselves.Isn`t this what a democratic society`s supposed to be about?

As for being bright - surely you`re aware that FF aren`t a voting option in the north? Laugh

R.I.P Brian. Sincere Sympathy to the Lenihan family.
Report kincsem June 10, 2011 1:21 PM BST
Rest in peace, Brian.  My condolences to his family.

Bertie wouldn't give him a job because he was too smart.  Instead Bertie and Biffo managed the economy, then handed the results of their efforts to Brian to tidy up..
Report Tony Fenton June 10, 2011 1:44 PM BST
Seemed a decent guy. Met him with his son out in the airport a few times. Travelled economy unlike some of his shítty party colleagues.

Cowen should have had the guts to tell him to step aside and look after himself when news of his illness broke.

In his constituency and those bordering it and Dublin there are 66 TD's.

He is the only FF TD. It shows how highly he was thought of.

RIP

Soapp.........turn that around and you will see how poorly his Fianna Fail running mates were regarded..............a bad bunch
