A fresh complaint has been lodged by another young GAA player against a prominent sports journalist already at the centre of a major garda sex investigation.

The new allegation has come to light since detectives started their inquiries into the initial complaint of statutory rape by another girl, it was learned last night.

However, it is understood the latest incident to come to light took place some time before the alleged rape.

It involves a different girl who was also mentored by the journalist while she was a member of an underage team, although she is older than the initial complainant, now 16. The two girls are attached to different GAA clubs in Dublin.

Senior gardai confirmed last night that the fresh complaint centres on alleged inappropriate contact between the girl and the journalist, but does not involve rape.

Officers said they had received details of the complaint in the past few weeks and had interviewed the alleged victim, who is now over 18.

But they have not been able to talk to the journalist about either of the complaints as he has been undergoing medical treatment at a Dublin hospital since the investigation began more than two months ago.

Gardai said last night that the journalist was likely to remain in hospital for several weeks, but they were continuing with their inquiries and interviewing all relevant persons while awaiting his discharge to be authorised by doctors.

It is expected that after he leaves hospital, he will be arrested and questioned about the complaints before gardai complete a file to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will determine if criminal charges should be brought against the journalist.

The investigation is being carried out by gardai from a city station and members of the domestic violence and sexual assault unit, which is part of the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, based at Harcourt Square in Dublin.

The garda probe started towards the end of March after the journalist's daughter allegedly discovered text messages he had sent to the girl on an old mobile phone.

The journalist had given the phone to his daughter, who was collecting old mobiles to donate to a charity. It is alleged she found the texts, as well as photographs of the camogie player, while putting a new SIM card into the phone.

His daughter showed the texts to other members of her family and they contacted the gardai.

Gardai have since carried out a detailed interview with the girl with whom the journalist is alleged to have had sex.

She has given them her account of her relationship with him in the months leading up to the alleged statutory rape and after.

The relationship is alleged to have started while the journalist was coaching and mentoring the girl and other members of an underage GAA team.

If the journalist is charged and convicted of statutory rape, he faces a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Last April, St Vincent's GAA football and camogie club, based in Marino on the northside of Dublin, issued a statement distancing itself from the sports journalist.

The man had been a member of the club and a mentor to an underage team at St Vincent's until September of last year, but had not mentored another team since then.

The teenager involved in the investigation is not a member of St Vincent's and the club has made it clear that it will provide whatever assistance is required by the gardai as part of their inquiries, while also respecting the rights and needs of club members.

The journalist had been a high-profile member of the club until the end of last year, when his membership lapsed.

Also, I'm not sure why you are linking statutory rape to the Lisbon Treaty but I'm sure you have your reasons for that little chip on your shoulder

Well said db1974. The fact that the journalist concerned may or may not be guilty of the crime alleged does not serve to discredit his opinions on other matters.

He was a preaching journalist that used his sports column to promote Lisbon 2.One of the promises made was our corporation tax rate was safe, that was a French lie and all our troubles stem from that referendum.
Reb seems to me a patriot in reverse Michelle De Bruin never failed a drug test and was the most tested swimmer of all time, most of the other swimmers did including Janet Evans who served a six month ban.
Report ReimerpYsatnaf June 8, 2011 12:06 PM BST
Michele De Bruin was given a 4 year ban for tampering with a urine sample - she denies it

Janet Evans served a 6 motnh ban?? It doesn't say she ever failed a drug test anywhere on the interent or served a 6 month ban

Confused

Michelle de Bruin was convicted of tampering with urine samples and received a lengthy ban. That's a simple fact. The case was poured over in excruciating detail by everyone involved (she is now a junior counsel btw) and was appealed. Let there be no doubt. And there was something else found in the samples, it wasn't simply a case of a sample which was polluted with alcohol.

"In a newspaper article three months ago, husband Erik de Bruin asked rhetorically: "Would someone please tell me why Michelle would put ethanol in a sample that did not contain a banned substance?" On Tuesday, despite loud and furious objections from his wife's lawyer, FINA, swimming's governing body, offered a one-word answer: androstenedione.

The court heard that de Bruin took the banned substance, which promotes the growth of testosterone in the body, between 10 and 12 hours before Al and Kate Guy doorstepped her to collect a urine sample that was eventually shown to have been contaminated with whiskey. Two other out-of-competition tests, which book-ended the fateful January 10 test, also revealed positive signs of the use of the testosterone precursor."

The journalist concerned ran a campaign against Michelle De Bruin and if this forum is typical a sucessful one.Michelle De Bruin is Irelands most sucessful athlete and has three Olympic gold medals despite the efforts of some.
Lets say we all agree that she took steroids..so what...they all took them, she was still the fastest in Atlanta.Has no one here heard of designer anabolic steroids, they were systematically given to American athletes in the nineties, also given to swimmers and Baseball players.Again has no one on here heard of BALCO,thats where they were manufactured. There were lists of names found in their files, one of these was Janet Evans this is the Daz using darling of this forum,as the holder of 5 world records it is fair to ask how did she compete against the drugged up East Germans.
Do the Spanish hate Miquel Indurain or Alberto Contador..no still heroes but because of a campaign run by some holier than thou journalists we are hardly allowed mention her name.Sonia OSullivan is still revered has she no questions to answer.

THE journalist at the centre of a garda investigation into alleged sexual contact with minors is seriously ill in hospital.

It is understood that the sports writer from a national newspaper is receiving intensive round-the-clock treatment at a Dublin hospital.

Sources said that the man, who was involved with a Dublin GAA club, suffered serious brain and heart trauma.

He was rushed to hospital on Monday after complaining of heart pains.

He has been attending a psychiatric hospital since allegations that he was involved with an under-age girl first emerged several months ago.

A second allegation that he was inappropriately involved with a young girl subsequently emerged.

Gardai have not yet been able to interview the journalist about the complaint because of his medical condition
