SOME of the country’s leading GAA inter-county managers are on a collision course with RTÉ because they believe the station’s GAA Correspondent and commentator Brian Carthy’s duties on Sundays have been downgraded.
Tyrone boss Mickey Harte confirmed to the Irish Examiner last night that several managers have withdrawn co-operation and will continue to do so until they get a meeting with RTÉ bosses on the issue.
Harte was one of several high-profile team bosses who turned down RTÉ for post-match radio and tv interviews after Tyrone’s Ulster SFC win over Monaghan on Sunday, explaining yesterday the action was in response to RTÉ "ignoring" a letter sent a fortnight ago seeking a meeting to discuss Carthy’s position.
RTÉ’s flagship Sunday Game programme did not carry any interviews either with Laois manager Justin McNulty or Kildare manager Kieran McGeeney after their respective Leinster championship games in Croke Park on Sunday against Dublin and Kildare. It has since emerged the former Armagh teammates are among a group of eight signatories to the letter posted to RTÉ.
"We sent some correspondence to the effect that we are very much dismayed and alarmed at the absence of Brian Carthy from major commentary roles at the moment," Mickey Harte told the Irish Examiner.
RTÉ head of sport Ryle Nugent confirmed last night that neither Harte, McGeeney nor McNulty would agree to RTÉ interviews on Sunday, a situation Mr Nugent expressed surprise at.
"Brian was on commentary duties in Limerick on Saturday and will be again next weekend. He is still part of our commentary team," said Nugent.
"I am of the conviction that RTÉ will assign reporters and commentators as it sees fit."
Mr Nugent also pointed out that RTÉ have less live commentary matches than before and also had a significant stable of very capable commentator across tv and radio that it was obliged to use. He also confirmed that RTÉ director general Noel Curran had received the letter from Mickey Harte and has responded, even though the Tyrone manager may not have received the letter yet.
On Sunday, Carthy was on reporting duties in Páirc Uà Chaoimh for the Cork-Waterford Munster football semi-final while Croke Park hosted two of the main games of the day, the Leinster double-header involving Laois and Dublin and Kildare against Meath with radio commentary from Darragh Moloney and Adrian Eames.
Harte said yesterday there have been "two voices on Gaelic Games" on RTÉ Radio in modern times, Brian Carthy and Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh. After the retirement of Ó Muircheartaigh last year, Carthy "seemingly disappeared into the ether" in terms of the amount of coverage he was given "or more so the games he wasn’t given".
Said Harte: "We just didn’t think that was good practice because we do believe that for Gaelic Games over the years there has been a distinctive voice on radio,’’ he added.
"And radio is an unique medium. It’s a highly challenging skill to deliver that in a way that paints a picture for people and I think you need to be steeped in the GAA to do that."
Harte explained they had sent their letter to RTÉ on May 23, saying: "We stated those very things I have spoken to you about and asked them — respectfully I might add — if they would give us a chance to have a chat with them to elaborate on how we felt.
"Not only did we not get a response, we didn’t even get recognition that our letter arrived. The letter was sent by recorded delivery, guaranteed next day and had to be signed for to be received. So, I don’t think it has been lost in the post."
Outlining the background to their stance in support of Carthy, he said that "at a quick ask", eight inter-county managers agreed to the letter being sent to RTÉ. "It’s by no means exhaustive and there are loads of people we haven’t spoken to yet. It was just to let the authorities in RTÉ know that we were concerned and that we would like to speak to them to discuss it at greater depth.
If the managers would withdraw co-operation on an on-going basis, he responded: "We believe that will be the case."

Surprised Ryle even knew there was a match in Limerick on Saturday !
What business is it of Mickey Harte et al whether Brian Carthy gets matches or not?
Obvious collusion here between Carthy and a number of inter county managers, agree with db1974 that its none of their business who RTE decide who commentates where.

This appears to me to be a poor attempt at redeeming there repetition as strong men,after they were exposed as weak with their recent silence on the treachury of judas cooney..!.
Neil,I will take the other view. Brian Carthy has been the heir apparent imo for the last number of years. A consummate broadcaster. Mick O'Hehir was the doyen, Mick Moriarty, close behind. And now we have these GAA blow in's who aren't a patch on what has gone before.
Daragh Maloney and Adrian Eames ( who is he apart from sport at seven!).
Daragh is woeful. He has that clown Dunphy on his radio programme every Monday evening discussing the premiership. He just gives him carte blanche to say what he likes never ever questioning his reasoning.
It will be a sad for the GAA and RTE if we are denied the marvellous commentaries of Brian over the next three months.

I'd have a preference for him over those you mentioned as well soapp, but how can it be right that it is in the gift of manager's to decide who commentates on their matches.
Really think its a bit rich of the "bainisteoirs" trying to dictate to RTE on this one. Not important whether you like Carthys commentaries or not RTE are employing him and its up to them where and when he works ,not the "bainisteoirs". He who pays the piper calls the tune.
Likewise it`s these guys` business if they don`t want to be interviewed by RTE....I,for one,would miss the insightful and honest interviews given by McGeeney and Harte,plus,as other posters have alluded to,Carthy`s commentaries are much better than Maloney`s or Eames`s.

It has been a traumatic and emotional time for mickey harte,his actions of late suggest to me that he is not thinking straight..!
micky harte would be better of getting some of that gear for his BARNET from Marty Morrisey.

In all honesty, what has this got to do with any inter county manager? Brian Carthy has always played second fiddle to M o'm for years, in his shadows. Would only be right to let the man take over the reins. I enjoy the man as a commentator, other dont not a big deal. There is more important issues than disputing who is to commentate the games of an amateur sport!
As a non GAA outsider is this all just a case of managers wanting their own puppet in the hot seat?
It's probably the fact that Brian has years of experience and does a good job.........Ryle Nugent as head of sport will have the final say..........I can understand where the managers are coming from.........It would be like Marty Morrissey commentating on Premier Soccer Saturday.
As I say an outsiders view, I could imagine the only reason the likes of Fergie as a football manager would want a certain commentator over others would be purely for a vested interest. Marty Morrissey.... He should be buried now for future generations to dig up and try to figure out what species he came from.

Maybe Brian Carthy says nice things about all the teams these people manage.........Irish people all over the world used to listen to the legend Michael O'Muirchertaigh and Brian Carthy served his time under him..........Ryle Nugent is probably the person they are getting at but at the end of the day he decides.......in fergies case a commentator might not influence a game as much as a ref who supports Man Utd.
To be fair they should not be getting involved, if these guys worried more about coaching thier players how to kick the ball and less on who is calling the game in the boot we would have a higher standard of sport for people to enjoy.
Spot on Rocket,mickey hartes actions of late have left us all down very badly.Im hoping the fact he is insane from grief will save him..!
