How good a race was this ? For me the jury will be out until we see future performances from the principals involved .
Carlton House missed work , lost a shoe in last furlong , still nearly won . Three other horses either won or looked like winning . Are there 4 or more excellent 3 year olds in this years crop ( plus possible other decent horses who may not have liked quirky Epsom or the going ) .
Waxing eloquently now about the winner etc on racing channel , but I still will wait for further evidence when they tackle So You Think etc . That will be the real test in my book .

A moderate enough race in my view. Dont think Carlton house saw out the trip
Don't think the shoe made that much of a difference the way the race was panning out,the best horse won and would have been unlucky as he was the only one still going flat out at the wire (the rest were wilting).
I'd say Carlton House was just not good enough at the trip as opposed to not getting it,I personally think the winner is a good'un but as Kelly says time will tell and I thought Pat Smullen was very negative on Recital.

Recital ran with his head cocked to the left for the last 1 1/2f

Recital got the run of the race and just wasn't good enough IMO

He had him miles back until the straight,I know the winner came from a long way back as well but not all horses can quicken like the winner did.That hanging trait looks like it's here to stay.

The antics of the jockey who rode the winner are an obvious talking point .
I can see why some people might regard standing up in the saddle and/or arm waving as desirable or attractive but I would argue against it .
This is a relatively new development born out of the modern cult of personality and the apparent necessity of appealing to a debased public hunger for all kinds of exhibitionism.
Racing doesn't need this . Millions have been thrilled by many previous Derbies and other classics where jockeys like Piggott and Cauthen did their thing with undemonstrative efficiency .
In the final analysis too -it is self-servingly ridiculous for jockeys to be showing off like this because ultimately it's the horse that does the winning.

Agree with Vubiant...one small slip from horse and you have man-overboard......lucky with having no bet in a poor derby....bit like the year dwyer and tregoning won.........
As the youngster said it was just sheer exuberance that caught up with him. As he said Frakie had to wait 15 years for his Derby. One can understand it.

I think Henry's decision not to go with Frankel has devalued the race as I think it was there for the winning as there's no decent three-year-olds about this season, Frankel was, is the best. All Cecil in my mind anyway was train the horse to stay 'slow' and the jockey to hold back and Queally to simply unleash him towards Tattenham Corner and off he'd go slipping the field in the process........ Cecil must have decided he (himself) hadn't the ability to do this - it was his for the taking.
Laid Carlton as I wanted to clear my Derby liabilities having backed Frankel from way back to win it and so I cleared my Derby liabilities.

Frankel wouldn`t get the Derby Distance in a horse box ! Wonder how many Classic winners the last poster`s had the " ability " to train?
So You Think , Workforce , Pour Moi . Interesting to see how you would price this up as a race at the moment . For a start I dont think this years "brilliant" Derby winner would be favourite , pretty sure he would be the outsider of 3 . Thats not to say he would not win , but reflecting opinions ....
Can't say with any confidence, but the way Pour Moi needs to race makes him a hostage to fortune to begin with. I'd say that Coolmore will 'make sure' SYT goes off fav anyway.

I`d make PM favourite,in receipt of the weight for age,especially given the improvement that will come on a more conventional track
Irish Derby thoughts anyone having analysed Epsom.
The winner aint coming, the 3rd unlikely to stay the 4th like one of O'Brien's before in the derby who lattered showed nothing at the Curragh.
For me ( Pour Moi
) the runner up Treasure House is the one most likely to be the winner making it a good month for Coolmoe.

Nthaniel of Gosden's would be interesting if he'd an entry. His form, even going back to his 2yo days is very high class.
