"THREE high definition live sporting events on RTE Two will be broadcast in High Definition this weekend on SAORVIEW:
To mark the launch of SAORVIEW, on Saturday and Sunday (28th- 29th May), RTÉ Two HD will broadcast on Saturday the Magners League Final between Munster and Leinster in Thomond Park plus the Champions league final and the Munster Hurling Championship Quarter Final between Cork and Tipperary on Sunday. Excellent news, RTE finally catching up with the digital revolution..........
It's a bit ridiculous that it's not available through a Skybox though
Realistically how many homes (which already have Sky boxes) are going to fork out more money for another box (and subscription I presume) to watch channels which are already available in SD through their existing box.

No subscription needed, its all free to air. Many new TV's already have the necessary hardware(MPEG4 decoder) built into them, so no need for an additional set top box.

The vast majority of homes wont need an aerial upgrade. Rule of tumb is if you can receive the existing analogue reception of TV3 and TG4 then you will be able to receive the new digital service Saorview without an aerial upgrade. You will need a TV with an inbuilt MPEG4 decoder or set top box with MPEG4 decoder. More info can be found at www.saorview.ie

If you have an rte aeriel then all you need is a new tv set that has freeview(mpeg 4) built into it. Nothing else needed. If you do not have this then you have to buy the freeview box,the tv cable from the ariel fits into this and then a scart from this box to your television. It will work on any old television that has a scart lead buy no HD.

IMHO they wont be appearing on sky in the short term at least. Irish customers dont appear to rank highly in Mr Murdocks priorities. If/When sky realise that they can sell more subscriptions in 'ROI' then it is possible it may approach RTE with a view of putting them on the sky platform in the ROI. Considering that they only put BBC3 & BBC4 on the irish EPG last week due to the fact it was facing increased competition from UPC and customers ditching sky altogether in favour of Saorview/freesat(both non subscription), i cannot see it happening soon......

My tv already receives the digital channels; rte 1, rte 2, rte news now, 3e etc. Do I need to tune in rte 2 hd or will rte 2 hd just replace rte 2 (non-hd) ?

123, that tv has mpeg4 decoder so should be able to pick up saorview channels. Can you receive all the irish analogue chanels ok ie rte1/2,tv3 &tg4??? if you can then you should be able to receive saorview. Try doing a factory reset on the tv and use the UK as your location country, then rescan and cross your fingers:)
