Reminded me of the election campaigns of my youth when our politicians got up on lorries in the market square with microphones and faced the crowd. Now all we have is harangueing from V.Browne.

Good article by Mary Ellen Synon in today's Irish Daily Mail. She really tells it like it is ..e.g she was the first I heard to moot the then unspeakable prospect of the collapse of the euro about 3 yrs. ago. Brilliant commentator whose writing is informed , witty and free from bullsh1t....
(wish we had more like that on the forum.

Ireland very unlikely to ever again witness such scenes with the visit of an American President truly over the moon to have a strong and direct connection to THE OULD SOD.... an outstanding occassion a truly remarkable visit...Obama delighted to find his roots or at least some of his roots trace back to Ireland, when only a short while ago, and before he got Bin Ladin, many Americans were convinced he was of pure muslim extraction thus making Obama a most likely 1 term President...not any more....

On a recent trip to Chicago and New York I did the usual pilgrimmage to the local "taverns" to meet first generation Irish (recent and decades-old arrivals) and the experience was always as it has been: you leave with a sense of sadness and sympathy for a group of displaced people who are hard-drinking and who quickly delevop an intolerance of black African-Americans and who would still be wrapped in the green flag except we "at home" have moved on.
Our history in the US is fairly chequered when it comes to assimilation and tolerance and Obama's speech and, more importantly, what remained unsaid, reminded many of a darker side to the Irish "American dream" (including a piece in today's IT).
As a history reader with an interest in the American Civil War I always found the Irish role in the New York City Draft Riots of 1963 very illuminating.
