Certainly he did. I laid it and was saying to the person that I was watching it here on the PC that I wouldn't have to worry about ruby in this race. Sad

Best jockey riding in the British Isles I keep saying and that includes McCoy.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2011 9:35 PM BST
One of the best i have ever seen.He gained three lengths at every bend codded the horse along for the first mile, inched him into contention and when he made the howler gave him time to recover and his timing was a thing of beauty.
I just missed seeing Martin Moloney but i saw Fred Winter,Tommy Carberry,Barry Brogan,Ron Barry,Bobby Coonan and Charlie Swan and they dont hold a candle to him.

now thats a compliment.
Report The Gotchee May 6, 2011 9:56 PM BST
You are getting carried away with yourself, it's easy wehen you are on the best horse. Townend and Fehily did equally as  well when he was out injured. He wouldn't lace A P Mc Coy's boots.
Report Newmanix May 6, 2011 10:18 PM BST
As a wise man said here a while ago.  "Opinions are like ar$eholes.... everyone has one!"
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2011 10:49 PM BST
The Gotchee..Cant agree with you about Ruby being on the best horse there, have a look at the ground he saved at every bend also look at his judge of pace done to perfection.
Do you really believe Ruby Walsh is not fit to lace A.P.McCoys boots.
Report The Gotchee May 6, 2011 11:22 PM BST
Mc Coy did it the hard way,he started at the bottom, Ruby was molly coddled all his life. His path to the top was considerably easy compared to Mc Coy. As I said already Townend and Fehily were great when Ruby was injured. He has turned into a right prick when he is being interviewed on the T.V. Mc Coy is always polite and friendly, different class to Ruby.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2011 11:31 PM BST
What has politeness got to do with riding ability, what has how you started got to do with riding ability, dislike him if you like but you cant deny his brilliance.
I dont accept your contention that Ruby Walsh is a bad interviewee nor do i accept that he has been molly coddled, you just personally dislike the man and that of course is your right.
Report da fallon factor May 6, 2011 11:34 PM BST
Gotchee you are spot on mate ruby was born into racing and molly coddled is right and he can be a right ignorant so and so to people outside racing circles

then we have AP who wasnt born into a racing family who started at the bottom and his talent brought him right to the top
and AP is not a smug smart fecker with smart answers to every question like ruby
Report Newmanix May 6, 2011 11:36 PM BST
We are debating his riding, not his personality.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2011 11:45 PM BST
I have never spoken to either jockey but i see Ruby Walsh at the races being accosted by eejits looking for tips and information seems remarkably stoic to me.I also remember a time when McCoy was accused of dourness this was attributed to his Northern background but again nothing to do with me,one final question do you think Ruby Walsh would ever have ridden Binocular like he was ridden today or Denman at Pynchestown last year.
Report da fallon factor May 6, 2011 11:47 PM BST
was denman even steerable last year at punchestown?
Report wildmanfromborneo May 6, 2011 11:51 PM BST
Probably not.I dont mean to question A.P.McCoys ability because there is no more dedicated or resilient as McCoy i just feel he doesnt have the finesse of Walsh.
Report dj876 May 7, 2011 7:05 AM BST
Great ride on uncle junior, agree that he is not the best interviewee,he admitted it himself in his book last year-that a fault of his is to jump too quick for the smart alec reply .
Report JayTrumpOldTomDubbl May 7, 2011 7:15 AM BST
"Path to the top was considerably easy" says Gotchee...never easy for any of them.....all get horrific injuries...followed around while working by AMBULANCES...AP has had plenty injuries and same for the Great Ruby lost his spleen even...we might all be a little cranky without that and having to take antibiotics frequently.....RUBY the best I have ever seen...
Report dj876 May 7, 2011 7:24 AM BST
fancy anything today jay?I suppose accompanied shud win, trading 2.08 at mo-cud well be odds on come race time.I like john kiely's taking stock at about 22/1,first run in a handicap over fences(other efforts over fences on soft ground).had a nice pipe opener over hurdles at fairyhouse-a staying on third .
Report wildmanfromborneo May 7, 2011 9:29 AM BST
JayTrump up early in your pursuit of winners.I agree entirely with your last post, very succinctly put.
Report The Gotchee May 7, 2011 10:03 AM BST
wildman, Ruby is a very good jockey, there is no doubt about that but his path to the top was guided through his family contacts. As for his great ride yesterday, I have to agree it was good. When he rides a race like yeterday people tend go over the top about his brilliance. I see journeymen jockeys every week on ATR's "ride of the week" riding brilliantly but never given the accolades Ruby gets. Some of those jockeys, given the same opportunities Ruby got would be just as good. Also he has an obligation to be good mannered when being interviewed not just for himself but for the good of racing. Personally I think the Walshes are too opinionated and come out with the same drivel all the time. Ted was a disgrace with some of his comments during the week. We need a fresh face like Gary O Brien.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 7, 2011 10:55 AM BST
I actually agree with most of your post, the one i disagree with is being opinionated, everybody should have an opinion even if its wrong. This forum is a place where we air our opinions and i for one have learned plenty from hearing others. Some people are afraid of being wrong hence the reticence but there is no need racing teaches us humility and gets us used to being wrong.
Racing is the only game where two year olds make idiots out of grown men.

Was out there for the paper...the Postmaster asked me if Paul Townend will be the youngest champion jockey ever... said i'd check that out for him...help any one.. dj896 i'm with you on those 2 and in spite of reservations about PC DKW's is probably too classy for these...

Mixed bag from him this week, the brilliant - uncle junior, the 'dodgy' - wee giant, and the awful - bishopsfurze

As regards his personality, having read his book, at least he admits he's a pr!ck Laugh

The Gotchee..........I know you are not a fan of the Walsh family...........I doubt Gary O'Brien would leave a full time job with SKY for a part time gig with RTE.
Report Vubiant May 7, 2011 12:40 PM BST
Jockeys can't be compared in any longterm ongoing way.
People can't be prevented from having opinions , preferences , biases.
But they don't amount to a hill of beans because there exists no proper principled basis for comparison.
Anyone who reflects on the matter will see that this is incontrovertibly so.
Report wildmanfromborneo May 7, 2011 8:34 PM BST
JayTrump...Paul Townend will not be the youngest champion ever, that accolade would go to Martin Quirke, but he will be of the modern era.Originally in Ireland there was only one champion jockey, this was because most jockeys rode under both codes Morny Wing,Phil Canty,Tim and Martin Moloney,so all winners counted. In the fifties they split the two for championship reasons so from then on we had a flat champion and a jumps champion and of that era he would be the youngest.
The Irish season was always the calendar year but this has been changed to coincide with the British season but as  we never had a close season seems crazy to me,a resultant feature of this is two Punchestown Festivals will fall in the one season.

Grade 1..I think you could be right,i know Ruby won the Championship in his first season as a professional, but how old was he also how old is Townend.A feature of old age is recent history doesnt register as much and when JayTrump posed the question i was going back through all the old champions i could remember never thought of Ruby Walsh.Any chance some forumites could answer my two questions.

Ruby born 14 May 79. Champion 98/99. Would have still been 19 ?
Barry G born  16 September 79. Champion 99/00. Age 20 ?

Both younger than Paul ?

i thought the ride ruby gave the said horse was very good, but i agree that hes made out to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, getting more than his fair share of plaudits. this auld king ruby and rubys the god shoite from mugs after hes won the champ hurdle the other day on hurricane fly drives me nutty, mike smith would have won on it even after giving him a ride like goldikova. im of the opinion that mccoy can ride anyone to sleep on the run in if hes on a horse of the same ability to the man next to him, jason maguire, dickie and ruby walsh all included. i dont like knocking jocks as most on here well know (with the exception of dickie hills and paul moloneyLaugh), but i dont think ruby is any better than say geraghty. im not saying i think ruby is bad, i think hes very good, but theres a handful of jocks his equal i think.
