HENNESSY BREAKS NEW GROUND

Wednesday, April 27th

Paul Hennessy has spent the past number of years setting all sorts of new records for a greyhound trainer in this country. On Friday of this week he takes his first tentative steps into a new branch of his career when he has his first two runners at Dundalk – as a Racehorse Trainer!

The man from Gowran has been close to horses all his life and for the few years has been involved in the ownership of a number of racehorses and has bred and kept a few horses at his premises near Gowran.

Recently he attended the necessary courses at The Curragh prior to receiving his licence and the big day arrives on Friday when Cheers Buddy and Bricks N Porter will carry the name of “Paul Hennessy” as trainer.

Being the champion greyhound trainer it is appropriate that his first runners will be ridden by joint Champion Apprentice Joseph O’Brien, son of Champion Horse Trainer Aidan. Said Hennessy: “There is great excitement down here in advance of the first runners. We are hoping they run well. They have been working on Tony Mullins’ gallop, YOUNG Eddie Nolan has been riding them out and they seem to be in fine form”.

So, Hennessy is bidding to follow in the steps previously taken by the likes of Mick O’Toole, who won an Irish Derby with Dickens Hill and a Cheltenham Gold Cup with Davy Lad; Pat Lally, who mixed both codes successfully, and more recently Reggie Roberts who has been turning out the winners in recent years
