I doubt if the Eircom League brain trust and one or two others who post here have ever read the newspaper he writes for or could even understand his articles.
Report Giant Strides April 18, 2011 9:29 AM BST
That`s an interesting take on it.
As one of the brains trust you refer to I feel compelled to reply.
I used to read Mr Humphries ramblings, but when I realised he was so anti League of Ireland I decided to sidestep it.
Given the background to this case and the man in question, it wouldn`t take much to turn this thread into yet another GAA/LOI slagging match.
Would it?

I love the way when ever anything comes on top they run straight to the mental hospitals. It doesn't make them any More innocent. It makes them more guilty that they have to hide behind some ancient ritual to try too get out of paying for their misdemeanours by saying they weren't in charge of their full faculties.
Report DistressedPostRace April 18, 2011 3:41 PM BST
He is in the mental hospital because he attempted to take his own life, failing presumably because of his not inconsiderable heft. Paradoxically, his gross obesity perhaps saved his life.
His life now has junk status but he should be man enough to deal with what he's done.

****, retract that comment lads, didn't realise exactly what ye were alluding to, v.serious indeed
Report applehunter April 18, 2011 6:58 PM BST
Don't think this can be called pedophilia.

Age of consent in some European countries is 14.

Not condoning what he did or anything btw.

Wasn't a fan of his musing in the Times either.
Report neill d April 18, 2011 7:08 PM BST
Mightn't be the best thing to be thing to be discussing on here lads, but here goes, it doesn't really matter what the age of consent is anywhere else, what he apparently committed was a strict liability statutory offence and he has no defense whatsoever.
Report applehunter April 18, 2011 7:13 PM BST
I don't want to defend what he did.

Just think it is incorrect to call it pedophilia.
Report neill d April 18, 2011 7:44 PM BST

I thought the crime of statutory rape had been removed from Irish law because it meant that someone can't plead that they believed that the girl was of legal age.

Could be wrong though.

What is the legal age of consent in Ireland anyway. 16 or 17?

From citizensinformation website

http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en
/justice/criminal_law/criminal_offences
/law_on_sex_offences_in_ireland.html

Statutory rape
The term statutory rape is not used in the legislation but it is the term that is commonly used for unlawful sexual contact with a person aged under 17 years. Until June 2006, charges for this offence were brought under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 1935. In the case of CC v Ireland, the Attorney General and the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Supreme Court held that Section 1 of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 1935 Act was unconstitutional. Read more about what happens when law is found to be unconstitutional here. View the judgement of the Supreme Court in the case of CC v Ireland here.

The effect of the Supreme Court decision is that Section 1 of the 1935 Act is no longer a part of the Act. The rest of the Act was not affected. A new Act, the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006 (pdf) was passed to replace the unconstitutional provisions in the 1935 Act. It also repealed and replaced Section 2 of the 1935 Act. The original 1935 Act has now been amended many times.

Defilement of a child aged under 15 years
The Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) Act 2006 makes it a criminal offence to engage or attempt to engage in a sexual act with a child under the age of 15 years. This is what is meant by the term ‘defilement’. The maximum sentence for this offence is life imprisonment.

A sexual act for the purposes of the law includes sexual intercourse and buggery between people who are not married to each other and any sexual act which could constitute aggravated sexual assault.

The 2006 Act provides that the accused may argue they honestly believed the child was aged 15 years or over. The court must then consider whether or not that belief was reasonable. It is not a defence to show that the child consented to the sexual act.

It's unlikely that the argument of being over 15 will be able to be used, assuming that the accused would have known which underage team she played for.

This will be my last post on this forum as I am sick to the back teeth with being hounded out of it.

Good luck to all of you with your GAA vs LOI infighting and baiting each other on every other thread. I have disagreed with most posters on this site at one stage or other but I have never seen the need to post a deregatory statement about them. or drag a discussion down to a personal slanging match.

You have all fcuked up a once great forum, one which had, up to recently, risen above all the **** that pervaded the likes of the horse racing and soccer sections of this site.

I have a full-time job, a wife and 2 kids and I have no interest in wasting my time constantly replying to posters who generate their kicks from hassling other posters who enjoy a good debate without seeing the need to resort to baiting and insults as opposed to backing up their views with reasoned debate.

It is a sad state of affairs when someone decides to drag a discussion about the sexual assualt of a 14yo girl into a meaningless slanging match based on 1 or 2 other threads where differences of opinion arose.
Report MJK April 19, 2011 2:39 PM BST
No Gant, improve facilities? You obviously forget the schoolteacher from Thomas Davis who made statements regarding allowing 'foreign sports' into Tallaght. Improve facilities, they already had a place 3 times bigger than Tallaght stadium in Rathcoole but turned it down for pure divilment. The best though was when said schoolteacher made the statement about GAA V Football in Tallaght stadium, "we'll see who'll be last man standing". We do indeedLaugh In hindsight it doesn't surprise me that Humphries was backing up this man, him being a schoolteacher and all.

If you want to read it I clearly said 'alleged to have committed a shocking act'

I would have objections at you hounding someone once he posts on a topic and I must say when you state that someone is defending his fellow liberal you seem to be implying something rather sinister.

I have debated with you before on issues v peacefully, but I or others don't like the attitude you've taken here to db74 since the moment you joined. If db74 posts you don't reply to stimulate debate you respond with personal abuse weather about his occupation or his political views. If you spoke like that to a stranger on the street you would talk yourself into a slap. Doing it on here does not make you a big man. I have no affinity to db74 but I think you have been quite nasty for a while now.
Report wildmanfromborneo April 19, 2011 11:46 PM BST
Squigs..If you read my posts you will find i never swear or namecall now read db1974 posts and count the insults i have broad shoulders and dont mind but db1974 may be sensitive but he was well able to call me a liar,a dope etcetera. The point about his occupation was relevant to the argument,a question he put to me which i answered truthfully at no stage did i descend to personal abuse.Your final point about physical violence is unworthy of you but again i dont take offence what concerns me most is the damage the pro Lisbon people have done to this country they have wrecked it and it breaks my heart to watch all the young people emigrating like i had to do over forty years ago.
Report db1974 April 20, 2011 11:45 AM BST
Where did I ever call you a dope and a liar or insult you?
Report wildmanfromborneo April 20, 2011 12:30 PM BST
As i have already said i dont mind, things said in the heat of battle are just that and best forgotten.I have looked back on threads and have found two, both were threads of mine that you replied to,one was...Fat cats and Lisbon...you demanded a link i was unable to,still unable, you said it was a lie, another one was about Michelle De Bruin i was defending her you took a different line,it was on this thread you called me a dope and a liar.Having read these threads again i contend that i never used intemperate language or used gratuitous insults i argued robustly no more than that. The post about your user name was in response to you saying you were African it may have been a poor attempt at humour but i have a feeling it was accurate and not insulting. Finally it was never my intention to insult or upset you,it was done inadvertently and for that i apologise.....I still think Michelle De Bruin was hard done by and still blame the pro Europe merchants for our woes.
Report db1974 April 20, 2011 1:28 PM BST
Then you should jhave no problem bringing the thread back to the to to PROVE that I called you a dope.
Report wildmanfromborneo April 20, 2011 1:39 PM BST
Look i have extended the olive branch accept if you like, reject if you like thats your decision.I have already stated that i dont mind things said to me so dragging up old threads would serve no useful purpose also i am not sure i am able to do so but you seem to have dropped half your denial.
