Rory only third, slightly disappointing

Great performance after last weeks disappointment by Rory .  Jet lag is always a big factor given the back to back nature of these last 2 weeks , and sometimes the jet lag hits people 4 days after travel .

Manissero is top class , may be someone we have on the leaderboards for a long long time given he is only 17 .

The Italian kid does indeed look a star in the making

Rorys putting cost him the tourney though imo, he needs to make some changes in that department but from tee to green he is brilliant

Well Rory and Manassero hit the same number of Greens in Regulation last week - and Manassero would be 30/40 yards behind in the distance stakes (Rory 14th for Driving distance on the European Tour Averaging just over 300 yards - Manassero 178th averaging 273)

And given the quality of McIlroys iron play also, it would be fair to assume The Italian was putting from further away than him more often than not

But Rory actually had 8 more putts than the Italian over the 4 days

BJG ..(.without making any big deal out of it) I seem to recall reading these facts and assumptions in one of yesterday's papers .
If you got them from the same source -I think normal  convention and practice dictates that the source should be acknowledged.
But if you don't give a fig about it that's fine,Grin

Derek lawrence in the Irish Daily Mail mentioned the stats above,
We must presume so -if someone doesn't mention the source of facts and figures like this that they come from official agencies like the European Tour  etc.

Telling figures those , bear out most of our views on why Rory did not win in KL .

That Manassero had same GIR figures as Rory while averaging 28 yards behind him shows the difference in their play although I suppose if you are playing from fairway as distinct from rough it is easier to hit and hold a green .

One of the things that puzzles me about play these days is the number of times they miss greens with a wedge in their hands .  Most of my playing days I was using a 9 iron for my shorter approach shots , but I can honestly say I could count on my 2 hands the number of times I ever missed the green using that club . I did find wedges harder to control direction wise though , cant explain that . So I only used a wedge when height / spin was the big factor .

Watched Paul McGinley a few years ago at Valderrama , where Tiger famously failed to get birdie at 17th , Paul had a birdie each day there , but from memory he was hitting a 9 iron in rather than a wedge ( a la Tiger ) . Less spin amd better direction ?

well feck me kelly ...get back on that tour right away ...the're stats phil and tiger would envy ...heres me playing off 18 ...lucky if i make the green with 9 or wedge 5 out of 10 ....i'll try and give you a tipped about why you dont make as many wedges as 9 iron hit the green ..it was pointed out to me that i was forcing my wedges ..hence i was always pulling them...hope that helps ..not that from were i'm standing you need any....

After the 6 majors of Sir Nick Faldo, it seemed as if we'd fogotten how to win.  Afetr a long drought, Harrington bagged a few majors, then Gmac last year & now Rory, it makes you proud to be British

I don't think any of those are British

McDowell & McIlroy are from the United Kingdom yes but hardly Britain

As for Harrington [smiley:crazy]

i do think "our rory" is british after all hasnt he nailed his colours to the mast already?
By:

Mcilroy has not nailed his colours to the mast ...that information is taken from an article by charlie mulqueen in the irish examiner ... Mr Mulqueen likes to think he is one of ireland s most respected journalists far from it .... he s a complete muppet .... ask any of the munster rugby players of the last 10 years !!! .... Mulqueen asked Mcilroy who he would represent in the olympics ... mcilroy said with a smile " i ve always represented Ireland but then again my passport is a British one so i don t know what the situation would be " that fool Mulqueen then wrote a big headline article Mcilroy declares for Britain in Olympics .....
I personally would imagine that both McIlroy and McDowell will be playing for Ireland ... as far as i know golf in the olympics will have 3 representitives from each country where their will be a team and individual event ......The powers that be would no doubt will want the best players playing in it so they would try to best avoid a situation for example where you were trying to pick the best 3 from Mcilroy,Mcdowell,Westwood,Donald,Casey,Rose,Poulter and whoever else comes through in the next 5 years .......
Bottom line its a long way off

Rory's affiliations etc are not in question I suspect .  99.99 % of people in world think of him as the curly haired Irish guy who plays some of the best golf in the world .

To the best of my information his uncle played for Armagh in the eighties , probably saw him but as most people know those in Down or Armagh tend to only see one team on the field . Know he supports Ulster rugby big time , in presence and reportedly also in financial terms --well a couple of those South Africans must be getting £250 k a year  , and even decent attendances at Ravenhill wont be generating fortunes !

Today is probably the defining day of his destiny , losing would not be the end of the world -- just a minor Armageddon . As long as he does not go flag hunting , plays middle of fairway and middle of the greens stuff he should be OK .  It's gong to be a long day though ...
