A very healthy crowd turned up for the opening of the flat on a pleasant afternoon.

Race 1) Whip Rule (10/1). This rag had a good battle with the gambled on Tough as Nails 12's into 7's. A bit harsh I was told throwing out TAN as it was a newcomer. The fav Loyal City (8/11) didn't impress with his eye I was told in the parade ring and duly ran a stinker even jinking at halfway.

Race 2) Sing Softly (8/1). AP's string showed they are ready to go at first time of asking this season and he battled well to beat the jolly Rose Bonheur (5/2) who was always fighting a losing battle.

Race 3) Blue Dahlia (9/2) This 10lb claimer S Gray looked very neat and had the winner up there all the way to win readily. Luisant (7/2f)had to come from a long way back and did well to get in the money.

Race 4) Lolly For Dolly (5/2jf) Tommy Stack has made his usual lightening fast start and brought up the double from his only two runners. Came from the back to win readily. Termigant (5/2jf) well backed never looked likely and stayed on at one pace for 4th.

Race 5) Drombeg Dawn (25/1) was always prominent and battled well for last year's joint champion Ben Curtis to prevail in a photo. Photo Opportunity (5/2f) never got involved at all. Thanks to a shrewd forumite advising me the winner was worth a bet I chanced two quid at 44 on here.

Race 6) Defining Year (7/1) Last year's other champion Gary Carroll just got up to deprive flattering jolly Adilapour (3/1). The surprise today was that Gary Carroll went to scale at 8 10. This will make life difficult for him season if he can't go much under 9 stone.

Race 7) Sapphire (11/1). This filly had a great step to her in the paddock and she duly obliged collaring the two market leaders Claoimh Solais (15/8) and Quest for Peace to win very cosily and looks the type to have a productive season.

What the day told us what that most of the yards have their horses well forward this season despite the harsh winte. A P had his usual batallion going through their paces after racing.

Soapp...Thanks for the informative post,would agree with you about the first race,very harsh,the best horse won and they never took into account they were two year olds having their first run.

# Very impressed with Sing Softly. Cleared away from the stand side group. Likely pattern class over further.
# Adilapour. Plenty of scope and should win a nice prize over further.
# And I`ll be amazed if that is as good as Claoimh Solais is.

I have to disagree with you. Sing Softly had the best draw of the first 5 in the betting. Was given a nice positive ride by Seamie Heffernan up the rail to maximise the draw bias. She has beaten the 72 rated Edenshaw (drawn high) 2 1/2 lengths. She will not be winning any listed race too soon.

The far side were at least 2 lengths up on the stand side through halfway so it`s possible there was no major bias.
When Heff asked her to go she quickened and won easily.
She might stay a mile but she showed enough pace to win more sprints. 
Granted the proximity of that horse gives your theory more credence than mine, but I`ll pay to back my theory in this case.

The thing is I don't think she is going to be over rated so you may well be on the right side of the market when she does step up in trip. I think the winner of the last(Saphire) was the most impressive with a view to progressing next time out from yesterday's card. In terms of jockeys SA Gray looks very good with a 10lb claim or would I be getting carried away as he has only had the 3 rides?
